...to the old Bloom space next to the WalMart in Fairfax. The permit is on the front door and they are gutting the inside. I guess the old Bloom interior wasn't crappy enough for Big Lots.

For convenience sake and being in the area where a tornado will hit, maybe Big Lots going here isn't so bad after all. Natural selection?

Seriously, what is the city thinking (aside from dollar signs)?

I'm not upitty, but even I chuckle a bit when I see the Big Lots out in Sterling.

If Fairfax were trying to revert to old, white trash, English speaking fairfax I'd be fine with it. However, they should just call it Grande Lots from the beginning. The first sale will be green cards, pack of 20. The other half of your family will need to come pick uP their own.

All we need now is a combination Virginia Employment Commission "Field Office"/Chinese Buffet (that accepts EBT), and we'll be all set hombre!

Exactly,

In areas where there is not a large illegal alien/minority population it's fun to shop at Big Lots. Good deals and a nice selection of items. However, you won't catch me shopping at this location. It will be a one huge cluster F. Does anyone remember the Ames that used to be in seven corners? That's what it will be like.

Not too long ago I saw a few RVs just camped out in the parking lot of Fairfax City Walmart, with folks literally sleeping there in the pajamas and whatnot. I wanted to take a picture because I couldn't believe my eyes but didn't find the guts to do it.

It looked like something from North Dakota mining town and not NoVA.

The economy is worsening. Wages are going down, and the price of everything is rising- especially food.

Not everyone will be able to afford shopping at Macy's or even Target. There are plenty of those in the area with all the new shopping centers and town centers being built (think Dunn Loring, out in Gainesville on 29, etc). There are PLENTY of options for the white-collar, upper-middle class shopper.

Some new "discount" shopping options should be welcomed to the county for those of us who work for less than 50 grand a year. Remember when there use to be Zayres, Best, bradlees, woolworths, and Service Merchandise all in the area at the same time? All WERE lower-cost options back in the day. Now that walmart has driven them all out of business, I am actually happy to see big lots as some friendly competition at Walmart's price point.

With the government talking about jobs being cut and more and more people becoming unemployed, these lower-cost places to shop will only HELP the economy- create jobs and provide services for lower-income people. If I can buy my household goods (say cleaning supplies, toilet paper, etc) for the week for $25 at big lots instead of $40 at target, I will go do that. Even cheaper is the dollar store. I also LOVE aldi's for groceries- I would love to shop at whole foods but that's my whole paycheck!

Just remember that not everyone out here makes 90 grand a year. Us baristas, hotel workers, cleaning ladies, tollboth agents, airline flight counter agents, customer service reps, mailroom workers, kinko's workers, landscapers, construction workers, flagmen, prep chefs, waiters, bus drivers, CNA's, old folks home workers, janitors, retail clerks and salespeople, teachers, child care workers, police officers, corrections officers, parking ticket maids, 911 operators, home repair people, etc all need a place to shop too.

Believe it or not, this is one of the fastest growing industries in the area- car title loans. If you have bad credit and are underemployed (part time or severely depressed wages) and need a loan fast to get your rent paid or keep your lights on, they are a viable option. I don't agree with it because you could lose your car, but the option is there. Just like payday loans. Sure they are shitty, but when one has no other choice, the option is there. It is up to the borrower to read EVERYTHING before the sign. If they dont pay on time they lose their car- that simple.

As the economy worsens, more and more people are taking advantage of these types of loans. If I had the money I would start a business such as this myself (but charge more reasonable interest rates). If you are business minded- think of the things people will still need everyday even if unemployed and open a business to tend to that need. At a decent price point and good research on location, viability, etc you will make money. This is how Titlemax makes their money- set up shop where there are lots of middle/lower income people where there is high visibility where people will pass their store everyday.

It's a discount store that purchases close outs and items from other stores that are closing. Lots of National brand food products and many regional and or local brands too. I stick with the National brands for food products. They also sale seasonal products, cleaning supplies, outdoor products, etc. If the store is kept in good shape, it can be fun to shop. However, due to the concept it's also very easy to go down hill very quickly without good management and store upkeep.

In a word, maybe two or even three, Go Fuck Yourself.

What these "low rent" establishments will do is bring down the property value and decrease the overall desireability of the area as a whole. Are you in touch with reality, whatsoever? A Big Lots, in the same parking lot as a WalMart...across the street from a KMart, right up the street from a PayDay Loans? This is catering to the lowest common denominator; "beaners".
Walk through KMart; a store that used to be part of your "discount" line, but, due to the large number of "beaners" living in the area, has turned into a complete Fuck-Hole. It's sad; a place i used to go as a kid with my mom would benefit a lot from a Bunker Buster.
Take a look at any "discount" store in an area with a high "beaner" population. It might as well be a swap-meet.

More "discount stores" will attract more of the same. More government leaching, EBT paying, banes of our society.

You sound like a Christian, saying "Oh, we should be accepting...", until it starts to impact you personally, then you aren't so accepting.

Oh, Best, Service Merchandise, Zayres, Bradlees, etc, they were discount stores according to prices 20 years ago...When they fucking existed around here. If they were here today they'd be right up there with Target.

big lots a bunch of cheapo knock off stuff, think the dollar store, but not costing a dollar. it's also a distribution place for name brand stuff that was refurb'd by the manufacturer and then sent back out for sale. like some appliances you'd see at a marshalls/tj maxx, etc. years ago, like 20, i got a skil cordless power ratchet at one for like 75% what it would have been brand new. there's deals there, you just gotta know what to look for.

I have to agree. I suppose that a pawn shop that also provides payday loans, sells used tires, and has a methadone clinic in the back *might* be a bit more ghetto, but Big Lots is a pretty goddamn close second.
