495Expresslane Violations

Does anyone know how VDOT and State Police will monitor new 495Epresslanes for HOV violations? Since HOV rides for free how will this be enforced using transponders? I know you switch it "on" or "off" but how do they know whether you have 3 in your car or not since those that have only 1 can use it also......

Initially, it's going to be rolling patrols. There was an article about this last week in the Post. As a car rolls onto the HOT lanes, the network will pick up whether your vehicle has the transponder in the HOV position or the single driver position. This information is then relayed to VASP cruisers in real time who are currently patrolling the lanes and as cars proceed down the HOT lanes those with the transponder in the HOV position will be visually scanned by troopers to insure compliance. VASP, VDOT and the Australian contractor who will be managing these lanes have all admitted that enforcement will not be 100%. However, in a few years, VDOT will be installing I.R. cameras on all the entrances to the HOT lanes which will measure the heat signatures of the vehicles and adjust the toll (or eliminate the toll in the case of an HOV vehicle). Once the I.R. cameras are installed, the transponders will not be required and vehicle owners will simply be billed monthly.

On a side note, because I know its been asked here before, VSP will hire/have additional Troopers in this area assigned to just the HOT Lanes. I believe, as of right now anyways, they will be the only Troopers equipped with the equipment to see how the toll passes are set.

As liberal as these courts are, it will not be hard to beat the tickets for having your toll pass set in HOV when in fact there is only one in your car. Just tell the Judge you "forgot" to change the setting. I could almost guarantee it will be thrown. Sad but true.

Clearly you haven't spent much time in traffic court here my friend. HOV cases seldom result in wins for the driver.

I have a VDOT EZpass that I only use twice a year. I have kept it on my car since it was free each month.

Now that they are going to charge me I would like to take it off and get my money back that is being held on it.

I am going to call VDOT but since I sometimes use I-66 should I keep it?

I do not commute.

My parents live in FC and I see them once a month.

Regardless of the fact that there are no tolls on I-66...

If you already have a transponder, you will not be charged a monthly fee. So might as well keep it while it works. If you decide or need to get a new one, they will start charging $0.50/month for a regular EZ-Pass, or $1.00/month for the Flex.

For EZPass Flex: http://www.ezpassva.com/EZPages/EZPassFlex.aspx

For Non-HOV users, the best deal remains Massachusett's FastLane EZPass program. There is no deposit and no monthly fee as long as you receive your statements electronically (by e-mail). VDOT charges a fee now.

How long before someone wraps some pillows in a heat blanket. How is this gonna know where it's a dog or a baby in the back seat. I don't see it ever being 100%. Think they could have saved a lot of money if they just made a HOV3 only lane, have cruiser patrol it, and have the only TOLL lane.

395 and 66 HOV is not 100% even now! You could probably go a month before you got caught the first time. The second and third times will start to put a hurt on your wallet. Besides when you get to work, what are you going to do with a dog or a baby in the back seat. I guess I could wrap a heat blanket around a manikin to dupe a cop, but that is a bit extreme.

Also, HOV violations are statutory, either you have 3+ in the car or you don't. Not much wiggle room or discretion. But Judge ... I am riding with the ghosts of christmas past, present and future ...

Guilty! Pay the fine!

You will see a little booth in the middle of the ez pass lanes, just stop your car at the booth and they will set you right up.

If you flick it to HOV off before you see the cop, you will be fine.

Also, 395 is much different than HOT lanes because of this Flex EZPASS. Not so sure it is as black and white as you think.

It is totally not worth purchasing a flex EZpass for a buck/Month. Regular EZpass is FREE.
