Has anyone seen the ghost of eva? She was brutally murdered in the woods around Burke on August 4 1918. She's supposedly buried in the Lee chapel cemetery next to her father who died 15 years later.
The night of the derecho about 2am I was trying to go down Lee chapel rd but found the road blocked by trees. The lights were dark at the 123 intersection. I was using the crappy flashlight that was in my car to look under my car as a stick had been lodged in the under- carriage. Suddenly a girl appeared at the edge of the woods wearing a flowing nightgown. As I tried to get a better look at her she screamed "I am Eva" and vanished before my eyes.
I am totally serious, this is a true story. I understand that Eva has been spotted before.

Eva and her family lived in the white farmhouse that is right next to Pohick Library. A bunch of hicks live there today, but they don't appear to be relatives of the Roys.

On the morning of Aug. 4, 1918, Eva Roy, age 14, left her home near Burke, at around 9:00 a.m. to tend her father's small herd of cows. When Eva failed to return home that evening her father began a search. Neighbors were soon enlisted to help, but it was some 24 hours later that her body was found tied to a tree in the woods near the old Hanse House, her apron strings tight about her throat. The county coroner, Dr. W. I. Robey, concluded that the girl had been "Brutally assaulted" before being strangled to death.

Peter Roy died on January 22, 1938, and was interred in Lee Chapel Cemetery next to his youngest daughter. Her murderer was never found.

Also written as Haynes, go to this website and zoom in to "Burkes Station". The Haynes house is off of what is now Burke Lake Road. Interestingly enough, a house labeled as "Hall" (Lou Hall being the alleged murderer of Eva) is not too far up Pohick Road from this location.

This is a fickle ghost. Seems to sometimes be either lost or roaming around looking (hunting?) for something. No one has ever been able to get a picture of her that I'm aware of. I noticed that one of the posters above mentioned Eva's alleged murderer, Lou Hall. Sometimes she is seen in the vicinity of that place. Maybe she's seeking justice...Or Revenge?

I'd like to go out on a ghost expedition to this place and check it out for myself. If anyone wants to go, let me know. I can drive. Also interested in other hauntings in the area.

Dianne says this is not the first time she has experienced visits from the beyond. Several years ago she claims to have seen a little girl that also appeared before her daughter, De’Onna Burnett.

She claims to see a figure in the photo that wasn’t present at the time. But what is most disturbing, is a message left on Dianne’s voicemail. She claims it’s a message from her deceased sister.

I used to work as a county cop in the late 80's early 90's and we used to get quite a few service calls about that cemetery around this time of year. We often rolled up on kids smoking weed and drinking cheap beer in there. We would pour out the beer and stomp their weed into the ground and send them home most of the time.
One night we were looking for a kid that was known to hang out at at the cemetery. The kid had assaulted his mother and had run away from home. I hiked in there with another cop while two other cops kept their distance sitting in their crown vic's. We had info that the kid was camped out under a cameo tarp.
Sure enough we spot a tiny campfire in the rear of the cemetery, we got pretty close to him before he tried to run. I grabbed the kid by his ankles while my buddy peppered him. Just about the time we get the cuffs on this kid a rush of wind that seemed to come out of nowhere takes our breath away. The wind was so strong that it blew the campfire embers out into the woods and set the dry leaves aflame something terrible. As I grabbed for my radio to call our buddies to move in I saw a young girl in a light blue robe walking through the fire. I called out to her for fear that she may get burned, she turned to me and screamed "God please help me!" then she vanished like scotty had beamed her up. I swear to god this is a true story.

Notice i said "I dont think" meaning based from my own memories from that period of time i could not recall any instances of cops carrying or using pepper spray.

I have seen the ghost of Eva. Ghosts do not speak but they can telepathically communicate with you to the point that you think you have heard them speak. Eva is a soul who is troubled and who is desperately trying to communicate.
It has been twenty years or more since I was there at the cemetery but I felt her presence very strongly about 150 yards from the cemetery near an old abandoned pick-up truck.
The truck had a faded logo on the door that had something to do with railroad maintenance. I have no Idea if this truck still exists today but I believe a clue as to the real identity of Eva's killer lies near there.
Eva appeared to me standing in the bed of that truck and said "Help me here please help me" and then she was gone. My brother searched that area with a metal detector and found the key to the truck a couple of old coins and a couple dozen beer bottle-caps. I hope Eva finds peace of mind someday, her soul needs a rest.

If ghosts existed, the Germans would have died out from insomnia years ago.

I don't really believe in ghosts, but this story is intriguiung, and I wonder if there is any way to access police reports from that far back in order to figure out what happened to this poor kid. From what I have found out:
- Lou Hall was caught after a lengthy pursuit with bloodhounds. It is unclear whether he was running or whether he was just far away and it took the dogs a while to find him. Residents of the county were going to lynch him, but Sheriff Allison guarded the prison and threatened to shoot anyone who showed up to take him. His exoneration was ultimately due to the fact that the belt use to strangle Eva was too small to be his, and that the murder scene showed evidene of a terrific struggle. Hall, evidently, was a huge man and he was extremely strong, so it was reasoned that Eva couldn't have given him the kind of fight that the murder scene portrayed. Hall's wife ratted on him, but apparently she was batshit crazy so nobody believed her, and the "blood" on his shirt was later ruled to be tobacco juice.
- A soldier who went AWOL from Camp Humphrey ( which I believe was is now Belvoir) was seen passing through the area of the murder at roughly thee time of the murder. He was arrested in Charlottesville shortly thereafter (I don't know how long it took to get to C'Ville back then, but it must've taken a while). The soldier did have what looked like scratch marks on his face, and they exhumed Eva's body to look at her fingernails, but it was determined that her fingernails were too short to have inflicted scratches, and the walk to C'Ville was through areas of lush vegetation, so the soldier was let go.
- Someone named RUbin, who was a prisoner in DC, confessed to the murder. He was moved from a DC prison to the Farifax prison, but the police never bought his version of the story. Peter ROy, Eva's father, visiten Rubin in jial, and Rubin recanted his admission after that. In fact , he said that he had only confessed to the crime because he thought it would be easier for him to escape from a Fairfax jail than from the DC jail. He made good on his thought process and escaped from the Fairfax jail by sawing through the bars.
- Two teenage boys, one a black kid from Clifton named Wilson and one a white kid from Fairfax named Robertson, were also brought in for questioning, but as far as I can tell , they were never arrested.

Apparently Eva was a very popular kid and it really shook up the county, which at the time was populated by mostly farmers and woodchoppers. Again, I would be interested to see if the criminal records or the ME'S records from way back then could be found. It must have been so easy, relatively speaking , to get away with this kind of thing back then.

That is CRAZY. I grew up in Clifton and when I was maybe 9 years old (over 15 years ago) my oldest sister had a friend come over to pick her up to go out one night. The friend who usually waited in the car ran to our front door and was pounding on the door screaming in fear. She said she saw a little girl in a flowery nightgown standing up in the garden under the trees. Our entire family went outside to see what she was talking about but there was no one there.. This is just super interesting to me considering I hadn't even thought about it in years..

I take back some of what I said earlier. The two 16 year olds WERE arrested for Eva's murder and they were a white kid named William Wooster of Fairfax and a black kid named James T. Robertson of Clifton. They were never convicted however

I had a neighbor who was a guard at the Lorton prison back in the day who told me that Eva had been spotted a dozen or so times it was always in September or October.

Lets hope the movie on Eva is better than some of the bs coming out of HW now.

3) Eva Roy: August 1918

Peter Roy was a Danish immigrant who had come to Fairfax from Minnesota in 1912. In November of that year he purchased two parcels of land near the current intersection of Old Keene Mill Road and Sydenstricker Road, totaling 180 acres.14 Roy, a widower, became a prosperous farmer and an active member of the Lee Chapel Methodist Church. With him resided his eldest daughter Caroline, her husband William K. Jerman, and his younger daughter Eva.

On the morning of Aug. 4, 1918, Eva Roy, age 14, left her home near Burke, at around 9:00 a.m. to tend her father's small herd of cows. When Eva failed to return home that evening her father began a search. Neighbors were soon enlisted to help, but it was some 24 hours later that her body was found tied to a tree in the woods near the old Hanse House, her apron strings tight about her throat. The county coroner, Dr. W. I. Robey, concluded that the girl had been "Brutally assaulted" before being strangled to death.15 A Coroner's Jury was appointed, and quickly concluded: "We, the jury, find that Eva Roy came to her death at the hands of some unknown person, and the indications point to Lu Hall, as the probable perpetrator of the crime."16 Hall, a 33-year-old woodcutter, lived about 1/2 mile from the scene of the crime and was seen in the woods near the time of the girl's disappearance.

The case was not to be easily solved, however, as other suspects were soon identified and eventually eliminated.

The first, William Wooster, age 16, was soon arrested for assaulting a "colored girl." He had recently been released from an insane asylum, but was found that he was nowhere near the scene of Eva's murder.17

The next suspect to emerge was a soldier who deserted from Camp A. A. Humphries (now Fort Belvoir). The soldier, a sergeant whom the papers fail to name, was located some days later near Charlottesville, Virginia. He had scratches on his face and hands, was wearing freshly laundered clothes, and claimed to have no memory of the events between his leaving Camp Humphries and his capture. Sheriff Allison traveled to Charlottesville to interview the man, but after some weeks of investigation determined that he was not connected with the crime.18

The lagging investigation seemed to finally receive a break with the apprehension of Ben Ruben, an escaped inmate from Lorton Prison. Ruben, who had been serving a three-year sentence for housebreaking,19 was arrested by Washington, D. C. police on September 19 for assaulting a little girl. While on the way to the police station he confessed to Eva's murder. Ruben claimed "he met Eva Roy, looking after her father's cows. He asked her for food and in a conversation with her he told her he was an ex-convict. She declared she would 'turn him up' as he declared, and he became excited and choked her."20 The Washington authorities were unconvinced by Ruben's story and wanted to try him for assault and theft before turning him over to the Virginia courts. An investigator sent by the Commonwealth of Virginia to interview Ruben concluded that he was not responsible for the crime, but extradition papers were filed anyway.21 On September 26 Ruben was escorted to the scene of the crime by Sheriff Allison, Commonwealth Attorney C. Vernon Ford, Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Wilson M. Farr, Dr. Swetnam, and acting counsel for the defense F. D. Richardson.22 After being unable to locate the scene of the attack or the tree where the body was left, Ruben denied killing Eva. He claimed the presence of the girl's father spurred him to recant his confession. Ruben's motive for confessing was revealed some weeks later when on October 6 he escaped from the jail in Fairfax. He was arrested two days later while attempting to buy a pistol and admitted that he concocted his story in order to be transferred to Fairfax, where he thought escape would be easier.23 He was eventually convicted of burglary and escape from jail and was sentenced to four more years in prison.24

Lou Hall was finally tried for the murder in Fairfax County Court. The prosecution was handled by State's Attorney C. Vernon Ford, assisted by Wilson M. Farr. The defense was provided by Walter T. Oliver. His first trial resulted in a hung jury with nine votes for guilty, three for innocent.25 His second trial resulted in a clear verdict of "Not Guilty."26

The situation has gotten worse. Now when you go out there, say just around midnight, Eva makes noises from in the woods. If you make fun of her (like we did), she starts shrieking. The batteries in our maglight flashlights and cameras died too. Truly horrifying. If that happens with a group of 4 to 5 people, what would happen if someone went out there alone?

I will go out there one night this month and give it a try. I feel bad doing it because the people who live right in front of the cemetery are probably tired of people going in there, but , hey, I didn't tell them to buy a house in front of a cool old cemetery. When I was little about 8-12 I would often play in the woods in the burke/springfield area and many times I encountered a girl in a white dress who would be running around or standing watching me. She approached me once and told me she needed to show me something and I was freaked out her energy was so intense and I could just feel so much sadness coming from her and I turned and looked behind me at my friend and I don't know if they saw it or if they were just felt her energy but when I looked back the girl was gone. I still see her time to time standing on the edge of certain areas of the woods and to this day I still regret not following her. I always had a feeling that this girl was murdered but now that I have some history of the area its quite amazing to find this information out.

Yes, that's what other people that live in the area say they feel as well.

When I was a kid in the early 80's my friends and I would ride our bikes on the trail that runs from the lake accotink dam to rolling road near the moving company. I think it might have been part of the w&od railroad back in the day. One summer evening my buddy had a flat on his 10-speed and we were on the side of the trail trying to patch the inner-tube when we heard something rustle in the leaves then a rush of wind picked up for just a few seconds and we saw a young girl in a loose fitting robe staring at us from the woods. She was there for about 20 seconds before she vanished before our eyes. We pumped that tire up about halfway and got the hell out of there as fast as we could. A few years later I heard the stories about Eva and I realized that we had seen her.

Well, I really DID go out there. It's extra creepy because a huge tree came down in the hurricane and the whole place is littered with wood and looks like a cemtery straight out of a Poe story. What do you think of psychics such as the Long Island woman in the reality TV show? Seems to convey compelling evidence of a spiritual dimension.

I think they are always going to seem more accurate than they actually are because there is a TV show about them. There have been many, many stories where so called psychics were put through a battery of tests and they displayed absolutely NO ability to psychically discern very simple things (such as what playing card a person behind a wall was seeing). The graveyard was spooky and I was uneasy, but absolutely nothing happened

Not only is King's Glen quite far from the site of her murder, it's also quite far from the area of her old home and her burial plot. So it wasn't the ghost of Eva you saw.

I remember being told this story from a neighbor. The ghost there was believed to be a girl that was involved in a suspicious suicide/murder? Don't remember the names involved, but she had been seen in the woods near the school. Many think that the girl went to that school.

I grew up in the Saratoga area off rolling road. We used to go down to this little creek and float toy boats and just have fun like kids used to do. One day I looked up and saw this girl who looked like she was a little older than me and she was dressed kinda funny in a robe of some sort. I asker her what her name was and she said "Run home now!" My friend and I got really scared and started for home, when I looked back she was gone. When I got to my yard I found my big brother laying in the yard next to the lawnmower, he had been stung bad by wasps and was having a allergic reaction. I got my Mom right away and she brought medicine to help my brother and we took him to the doctors office. The doctor told me I saved his life but I know it was really Eva!

I've noticed that there are more sightings of Eva around that area when there's going to be bad weather or bad accidents. Could she be trying to warn people?

Peter Roy was a Danish immigrant who had come to Fairfax from Minnesota in 1912. In November of that year he purchased two parcels of land near the current intersection of Old Keene Mill Road and Sydenstricker Road, totaling 180 acres.14 Roy, a widower, became a prosperous farmer and an active member of the Lee Chapel Methodist Church. With him resided his eldest daughter Caroline, her husband William K. Jerman, and his younger daughter Eva.

On the morning of Aug. 4, 1918, Eva Roy, age 14, left her home near Burke, at around 9:00 a.m. to tend her father's small herd of cows. When Eva failed to return home that evening her father began a search. Neighbors were soon enlisted to help, but it was some 24 hours later that her body was found tied to a tree in the woods near the old Hanse House, her apron strings tight about her throat. The county coroner, Dr. W. I. Robey, concluded that the girl had been "Brutally assaulted" before being strangled to death.15 A Coroner's Jury was appointed, and quickly concluded: "We, the jury, find that Eva Roy came to her death at the hands of some unknown person, and the indications point to Lu Hall, as the probable perpetrator of the crime."16 Hall, a 33-year-old woodcutter, lived about 1/2 mile from the scene of the crime and was seen in the woods near the time of the girl's disappearance.

The case was not to be easily solved, however, as other suspects were soon identified and eventually eliminated.

The first, William Wooster, age 16, was soon arrested for assaulting a "colored girl." He had recently been released from an insane asylum, but was found that he was nowhere near the scene of Eva's murder.17

The next suspect to emerge was a soldier who deserted from Camp A. A. Humphries (now Fort Belvoir). The soldier, a sergeant whom the papers fail to name, was located some days later near Charlottesville, Virginia. He had scratches on his face and hands, was wearing freshly laundered clothes, and claimed to have no memory of the events between his leaving Camp Humphries and his capture. Sheriff Allison traveled to Charlottesville to interview the man, but after some weeks of investigation determined that he was not connected with the crime.18

The lagging investigation seemed to finally receive a break with the apprehension of Ben Ruben, an escaped inmate from Lorton Prison. Ruben, who had been serving a three-year sentence for housebreaking,19 was arrested by Washington, D. C. police on September 19 for assaulting a little girl. While on the way to the police station he confessed to Eva's murder. Ruben claimed "he met Eva Roy, looking after her father's cows. He asked her for food and in a conversation with her he told her he was an ex-convict. She declared she would 'turn him up' as he declared, and he became excited and choked her."20 The Washington authorities were unconvinced by Ruben's story and wanted to try him for assault and theft before turning him over to the Virginia courts. An investigator sent by the Commonwealth of Virginia to interview Ruben concluded that he was not responsible for the crime, but extradition papers were filed anyway.21 On September 26 Ruben was escorted to the scene of the crime by Sheriff Allison, Commonwealth Attorney C. Vernon Ford, Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Wilson M. Farr, Dr. Swetnam, and acting counsel for the defense F. D. Richardson.22 After being unable to locate the scene of the attack or the tree where the body was left, Ruben denied killing Eva. He claimed the presence of the girl's father spurred him to recant his confession. Ruben's motive for confessing was revealed some weeks later when on October 6 he escaped from the jail in Fairfax. He was arrested two days later while attempting to buy a pistol and admitted that he concocted his story in order to be transferred to Fairfax, where he thought escape would be easier.23 He was eventually convicted of burglary and escape from jail and was sentenced to four more years in prison.24

Lou Hall was finally tried for the murder in Fairfax County Court. The prosecution was handled by State's Attorney C. Vernon Ford, assisted by Wilson M. Farr. The defense was provided by Walter T. Oliver. His first trial resulted in a hung jury with nine votes for guilty, three for innocent.25 His second trial resulted in a clear verdict of "Not Guilty."26

Peter Roy died on January 22, 1938, and was interred in Lee Chapel Cemetery next to his youngest daughter.27 Her murderer was never found.

Peter Roy was a Danish immigrant who had come to Fairfax from Minnesota in 1912. In November of that year he purchased two parcels of land near the current intersection of Old Keene Mill Road and Sydenstricker Road, totaling 180 acres. Roy, a widower, became a prosperous farmer and an active member of the Lee Chapel Methodist Church. With him resided his eldest daughter Caroline, her husband William K. Jerman, and his younger daughter Eva.

On the morning of Aug. 4, 1918, Eva Roy, age 14, left her home near Burke, at around 9:00 a.m. to tend her father's small herd of cows. When Eva failed to return home that evening her father began a search. Neighbors were soon enlisted to help, but it was some 24 hours later that her body was found tied to a tree in the woods near the old Hanse House, her apron strings tight about her throat. The county coroner, Dr. W. I. Robey, concluded that the girl had been "Brutally assaulted" before being strangled to death. A Coroner's Jury was appointed, and quickly concluded: "We, the jury, find that Eva Roy came to her death at the hands of some unknown person, and the indications point to Lu Hall, as the probable perpetrator of the crime." Hall, a 33-year-old woodcutter, lived about 1/2 mile from the scene of the crime and was seen in the woods near the time of the girl's disappearance.

The case was not to be easily solved, however, as other suspects were soon identified and eventually eliminated.

The first, William Wooster, age 16, was soon arrested for assaulting a "colored girl." He had recently been released from an insane asylum, but was found that he was nowhere near the scene of Eva's murder.

The next suspect to emerge was a soldier who deserted from Camp A. A. Humphries (now Fort Belvoir). The soldier, a sergeant whom the papers fail to name, was located some days later near Charlottesville, Virginia. He had scratches on his face and hands, was wearing freshly laundered clothes, and claimed to have no memory of the events between his leaving Camp Humphries and his capture. Sheriff Allison traveled to Charlottesville to interview the man, but after some weeks of investigation determined that he was not connected with the crime.

The lagging investigation seemed to finally receive a break with the apprehension of Ben Ruben, an escaped inmate from Lorton Prison. Ruben, who had been serving a three-year sentence for housebreaking,19 was arrested by Washington, D. C. police on September 19 for assaulting a little girl. While on the way to the police station he confessed to Eva's murder. Ruben claimed "he met Eva Roy, looking after her father's cows. He asked her for food and in a conversation with her he told her he was an ex-convict. She declared she would 'turn him up' as he declared, and he became excited and choked her." The Washington authorities were unconvinced by Ruben's story and wanted to try him for assault and theft before turning him over to the Virginia courts. An investigator sent by the Commonwealth of Virginia to interview Ruben concluded that he was not responsible for the crime, but extradition papers were filed anyway. On September 26 Ruben was escorted to the scene of the crime by Sheriff Allison, Commonwealth Attorney C. Vernon Ford, Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Wilson M. Farr, Dr. Swetnam, and acting counsel for the defense F. D. Richardson. After being unable to locate the scene of the attack or the tree where the body was left, Ruben denied killing Eva. He claimed the presence of the girl's father spurred him to recant his confession. Ruben's motive for confessing was revealed some weeks later when on October 6 he escaped from the jail in Fairfax. He was arrested two days later while attempting to buy a pistol and admitted that he concocted his story in order to be transferred to Fairfax, where he thought escape would be easier. He was eventually convicted of burglary and escape from jail and was sentenced to four more years in prison.

Lou Hall was finally tried for the murder in Fairfax County Court. The prosecution was handled by State's Attorney C. Vernon Ford, assisted by Wilson M. Farr. The defense was provided by Walter T. Oliver. His first trial resulted in a hung jury with nine votes for guilty, three for innocent. His second trial resulted in a clear verdict of "Not Guilty."

Peter Roy died on January 22, 1938, and was interred in Lee Chapel Cemetery next to his youngest daughter.27 Her murderer was never found.

Anyone seen Eva lately? I know last year this place was a hub of sightings of her.

Tomorrow will be the 96 year anniversary of her murder. Most of her sightings have been at the Lee chapel, that was her church and that is where her remains lay. It seems she appears at dusk or shortly after dark.

Fifteen-Year-Old Girl Found Murdered Near Burke, Va.

Lu Hall, a white man, about twenty-four years of age, is held at the Fairfax county jail, accused of the murder of little Eva Roy, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Peter Roy, a farmer living near Burke Station, Virginia.

The young girl’s body was found Wednesday afternoon tied to a tree in a wood near her father's farm. Her apron strings had been used to hold her in a sitting position against the tree trunk. A bloody trail leading from an open meadow to the wood showed where her body had been dragged to its hiding place.

Little Miss Roy had been missing since the day before, and her parents and the neighbors had been searching the countryside for the past twenty-four hours. She had taken her father's cow Into the meadows to pasture, and had failed to return at the usual time.

Sheriff Allison and two deputies suspected Hall of the crime from the first, and late last night found him at the home of his brother and arrested him. The prisoner had been seen by a number ot the neighbors in the wood where the girl's body was found, a short time after the time of her disappearance.

The murder followed a criminal assault, physicians stated yesterday. The body has been taken to the home of the girl's father for burial.

Who killed Eva Roy?

Deputations of citizens and county officials of Fairfax county. Va., are today guarding the jail in Fairfax Court House, where Lou Hall, a, white man, is held charged with one of the most brutal crimes in the history of the State.

Attacked and murdered Tuesday before noon, Eva Dagmar Roy, the fourteen-year-old daughter of Peter Roy, a farmer of Burke's, Va., a few miles from Fairfax Court House, was found in a sitting position tied to a tree Wednesday morning shortly after 8 o'clock by members of a searching party who had been beating the woods all night long. The girl was dead.

Her body showed marks of the struggle with the assailant before she died, and the ground bore evidence of the unequal fight. Weeds were trampled underfoot and branches of small trees were broken.

A garter and torn bits of her clothing were found In the underbrush. A path through the high weeds into the thicket where the body was found showed the course of the murderer when he dragged her from the spot where the attack occurred.

Evidence Circumstantial.

Evidence against Lou Hall is purely circumstantial. He is officially charged with the murder and will be brought to trial In September. A preliminary hearing will be arranged within ten days by the commonwealth attorney, J. Vernon Forrest.

Woodcutters who had worked with Hall gathered In the quiet village last night There were threats of a lynching. In the darkness about the court house square, on one corner of which the little brick jail is situated, the crowd gathered half-silent, sullen. From his cell In the jail, Lou Hall sat and watched the men. Sheriff J. R. Allison and Deputy Sheriffs Resin and White and Jailer Tom Cross stood guard all night long.

Lou Hall lived within 50 yards of the spot in which the body of Eva Roy was found murdered. He has a wife and two children, whom he supported by chopping wood.

On the day of the murder, Tuesday. he went home about noon, took his wife and one child away to her father's .home, and himself took the other child and went to his brother's home in Accotink, several miles from Burk's. There he was arrested about 6 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, when Sheriff Allison discovered circumstances which pointed to him as the logical man to solve the mystery of the little girl's death. He denies all knowledge of the crime.

Suspected by Father.

In the home of Eva Roy it Is openly charged that Lou Hall is guilty. Peter Roy, the father, a Dane who moved to Virginia from Minnesota about five years ago, bringing his family, is silent. Today, his comment was:

"Ah, well! It Is one of those.things one does not easily get over."

In an interview with a reporter for The Times as be sat under the wide spreading oak trees that shade his quiet farmyard, he told the story of the hours during which with neighbors and friends he searched the deep woods for his daughter, finally to find her murdered.

"As far as I know, it was 9 o'clock Tuesday morning when she left home," he said. "She went to herd the cows. I had told her to bring them home a little after 12 o'clock, but at noon I was not at home. I had gone to Burke's. I was surprised when I found that she was not at home when I got there.

"As soon as I could get ready, I started over. I think I walked over forty-five minutes before I found the cows. When I found them they were near the Hanse place, as it is called, and I looked all around but didn't find her. I then went to the house to inquire of the people if they had seen
her, but they were not at home.

Neighbors Help Search.

"Then I went home, as I was tired out, to get a horse to ride. I also got Mr. Monroe and Eli Larsen, neighbors, to go with me. I looked around for some time and then told Mr. Monroe that I should go to Mrs. Hall's parents' home to find out if she had seen anything of my girl and the cattle during the day. Her father said that she and her husband, Lou Hall, had come there about 3 o'clock In the afternoon. I then went to see Mr. and Mrs. Hall. Lou's father and mother. They said he had gone to his brother’s home, in Accotink, with his little boy. She, with her little girl, stayed there.

"Then I came back and met a lot of other men and we were looking through the woods all night long. We went home to get a little breakfast at daylight and were back on the search shortly after daylight. We found her about half-past 8 o’clock.

Paul Marshall, of Burke's, found the body. He was searching with Hillery Harrison and Russell Hughes. An exact description of the finding of the body was furnished today by Mr. Hughes.

"Paul Marshall found the body about thirty yards from the spring." he said. "I was walking around the other side of the thicket and heard him say, “Here she is."

"She was laying with her back against a tree. The belt which goes around her apron was tied In a hard knot around her neck and close up to her chin. You couldn't get a knife blade between the flesh and string to cut it off. Her lower limbs were partially bare. Her right foot was doubled under her left. Her chin rested on her left shoulder. Her clothing was not torn very much, but there were heavy scratches on the neck and body. Her face was disfigured, and on her chin were the marks of teeth, as on her ears.

Shoe Tracks Found.

"The surface of the little tree above her head was unmarked, showing that she was not struggling when tied to the tree. After finding the body, the searching parties were called in from every direction, and we examined the ground. Papers from her lunch were scattered about the ground around the spring. Tracks of a man's shoe were traced from the spring to a deserted house on the hillside. The shoe appeared to be about a size 11. Before finding her. we traced her footprints as she followed her herd of cows."

Bloodhounds were brought into play after the body was found. In Hall's deserted house a piece of clothing was found which was still smelling of his body. The hound was given the scene and started to bay, but later the plan of running the murderer down was abandoned as unadvisable because the scent was more than twelve hours old.

"From the condition of the body," said Sheriff J. R. Allison, who placed Hall under arrest, "the crime must have been committed early in the day."

“The fact that the girl had eaten her lunch indicates that it must have been before noon. The belief that an escaped convict from Occoquan committed the crime is not plausible. These woods are ten miles from Occoquan. Two prisoners were reported to have escaped shortly before the murder of Eva Roy took place.

"The district where the crime was committed, is, on the whole, a very poor section. The girl was very bright and much liked in the community. She took a number of prizes for her scholarship at school.

"Between 12 and 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Lou Hall stopped at Davis' place, a country store near Barker's Crossroads, ten miles from Fairfax. In the stretch of woods where she was killed there are about 5,000 acres of the thickest timber. It is the section called Lee Chapel, and is a place of tragedy and ignorance, wild and untamed in some parts."

To complicate the case, a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a negro, Wilbur Wooster, 17 years old, charging him with a criminal attack on a negro girl. Whether there is any likelihood that Wooster committed the crime on Eva Roy isIs the subject of an investigation being made today.

Passed the Spring.

Walter Wood, a white man employed as a woodcutter, was with Lou Hall about 11 o'clock the day of the murder, according to his statement to the sheriff. He and Hall cut down a bee tree in the hope of finding some honey, and then separated, Hall going toward his home. His steps led him past the spot where the murder was committed, which was comparatively close to his home. He must have passed the spring where Eva Roy was eating her lunch since there was no other way to his house.

A coroner's jury, composed of C. P. Henry, foreman, W. P. Marshall. G. C. White, A. B. Carter, R. A. Farr and C. N. Stewart returned a verdict of death at the hands of an unknown man after the inquest Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

By inquiry, Sheriff Allison learned that Hall had gone to the home of his brother, Joseph Hall, a laborer living at Accotink. When Sheriff Allison took him into custody Hall made no protest. He did not ask any questions, according to the sheriff.

He got his hat and entered the car. He did not have a coat. He seemed worried, said the sheriff. He talked little during the fourteen-mile ride. White, who accompanied the sheriff, asked Hall why be killed Eva Roy. Hall replied:

"I didn't kill her. Is that why I am arrested?"

Told that bloodhounds had been on the search for him, Hall said he supposed they were searching for the two escaped convicts. He denied the murder, but seemed to take his arrest as a matter of course, failing to ask questions until they neared the jail, when White spoke to him.

Hall is thirty-three years old and has a wife and two children.

Eva came home one day from tending the cows and told us how she had seen Hall beating his wife," said Mrs. Jerman, the dead girl's sister. “Eva was frightened to death of Hall, but she told us she would reprimand him if she saw him do it again."

Hall is about 5 feet 11 inches tall, has light hair and eyes, and is thin and wiry. When arrested he wore a hickory shirt, overalls, a felt hat, and was barefoot.

Thursday morning, Joseph Hall called to see his brother. They talked for several minutes, but nothing was said of the crime. Hall gave his brother $2 with which to purchase some tobacco. He is the only visitor the accused man has received since his arrest, with the exception of The Times reporter and county officials.

In answer to a series of questions put by the reporter. Hall steadily replied:

"I don't know."

He has no lawyer as yet.

The scene of the murder is one of the wildest spots in this section of the country. After leaving a cross roads near the home of the Roys, the trail leads down into a deep bottom land. Trees spread their branches overhead until there is a network of green foliage obscuring the sky. To each side are thick woods, heavy with undergrowth and small trees. Tall beeches and oaks and elms abound in the timber, and it was in here that Hall worked- when he worked at all- cutting wood. He was employed by Norman Stewart, of Burke's.

Where Hall Lived.

Pohick run, a small creek, cuts through the bottom land. On the trail taken by Eva Roy as she followed her herd Tuesday morning there are numbers of difficult crossing places where bridges have been washed away. On the old Hanse place, as some call It, there are two springs, about 500 yards apart by the winding pathway.

Between the two springs Hall lives in a little ramshackle house with his wife and children.

Although Lou Hall, thirty-three years old, a woodchopper, is being held in the county jail at Fairfax, Va., on suspicion, authorities are without substantial evidence to show who assaulted and brutally murdered fifteen-year-old Eva Roy on a deserted farm near her home at Burke Station, Va., Tuesday.

Hall told Sheriff J. R. Allison that he knew Eva was accustomed to look after her father's cows in the woods and he admits he was in the vicinity of the scene of the murder Tuesday, but since his arrest Wednesday afternoon he has steadfastly denied that he saw the girl that day.

Girl Was Strangled.

The coroner's jury, which gathered Wednesday morning at the spot where the body was found, decided that the girl died from strangulation. The verdict stated that while the perpetrator of the crime was not definitely known to them, suspicion rested upon Lou Hall.

Dr. W. I. Robey of Herndon, Va., presided at the inquest, and the members of the jury were C. P. Henry, O. C. White, C. Norman Steward. A. E. Carter, Paul Marshall and R. A. Farr.

On the strength of the verdict Justice of the Peace C. P. Henry gave Sheriff J. R. Allison a warrant, directing him to take Hall into custody and hold him as a suspect. Armed with this warrant, the sheriff found Hall at the home of his brother, Joseph Hall, at Accotink.

Question of Holding.

The grand jury will not meet until September 16, when the county court convenes, but the question of whether Hall is to be held for the grand jury may be decided at a preliminary hearing within a few days. At noon today no arrangements had been made for the hearing.

Sheriff Allison is desirous of tracing every clue before arraigning Hall. "A stranger might have passed through the woods, committed the murder and kept on going," the sheriff pointed out. He called attention to the fact that the evidence against Hall is purely circumstantial.

One theory brought to the sheriff's attention is that a convict, who was reported to have escaped from Occoquan a few days ago, might have been hiding in the woods and committed the crime. Sheriff Allison is working on the case today, but so far as could be learned had not uncovered any additional information up to noon.

Only the child's father, Peter Roy, her sister, Carolyn Jerman, and brother-in-law, William Jerman, attended the simple burial ceremony yesterday afternoon in the graveyard of Lee Chapel, about two miles from the Roy farm.

Assuming that news of the murder had not yet reached Accotink, which is twelve miles from Burke, Sheriff Allison said:

"Hall, I've got a warrant for you for a little mix-up at Burke."

Denies He's Slayer.

According to the sheriff, Hall showed little emotion, and did not make much inquiry about why he was arrested. When asked at the jail later if he killed "the girl," he denied any knowledge of the murder.

Hall has only a limited education and earns a living cutting wood in the woods where Eva was murdered. His home, where his wife and two little children live, is not more than 500 yards from the scene of the murder.

Questioned by the sheriff about his movements on the day of the murder, Hall said he left his home some time in the morning- he could not place the time- and went into the woods. The spot where Eva was found is [but] a few feet from the path which Hall took from his home to where he chops trees for C. Norman Steward. A few feet opposite, where the girl was found, is a spring.

Passed Near Murder Scene.

Hall admitted he passed the spring in going through the woods. He had not been cutting long, he told the sheriff, when he decided it "was too hot to cut wood," and he started back home. He admits he again passed the spring, but denies he saw Eva. According to Sheriff Allison, he could not approximate the time he returned home. Others who were chopping wood Tuesday say it was about 11 o'clock in the morning when he quit.

Continuing his story to the sheriff, Hall said he was not home long when he decided to go to Accotink and try to get work at Camp Humphreys. Accordingly, about 1 o'clock, he took his wife and two little children to the farm of his father-in-law, James E. Taylor, about two miles from Burke. Leaving his wife at a creek near her father's home, Hall continued on his journey to Accotink.

Story of Eva's Sister.

Back at the little red farmhouse of the Roys the pitiful side of the tragedy was being related. Mrs. Carolyn Jerman, only sister of the murdered girl, told the following story:

"Eva started out with the cows early that morning, taking a package of lunch and a bottle of coffee. She was to come back at noon, and had intended taking her father's watch to tell the time, but she forgot the watch. When 1 o'clock came and Eva did not return I grew worried. But father had gone down to Burke Station for some feed, and it was late in the afternoon when he returned. I told him I was worried about Eva and he said he would go down and help her home with the cows. A neighbor came over and delayed him and it was about 5 o'clock when he left.

"When he bad not returned at 7 o'clock, I became alarmed and followed him. I had not gone far into the thick woods, when I heard the familiar jangling of the cowbells, and I breathed a sigh of relief. A few minutes later I heard father calling me, and I cried back:

" 'It's all right, father, I hear Eva coming now with the cows.' But he called back to me, 'No, child. I found the cows, but Eva was not with them.'".

Discovery of the Body.

Farmers in the vicinity organized searching parties and beat the woods all of Tuesday night. The first place the father, Peter Roy, went was to the Hall farm, but it was deserted. It was 8 o'clock Wednesday morning when one of the parties, led by Paul Marshall, found the body.

The body was in a sitting position against the trunk of a slender tree. Her belt was drawn so tightly around her throat that it could not be released until cut. Her clothes were half torn from her and black bruises on her hands and arms gave mute testimony of the straggle which she made to escape from her assailant.

The body was found behind thin underbrush on a slight elevation about fifteen feet from the path running through the woods. Trampled grass and broken twigs indicated that the child was chased around the tree and fought with all her strength before she was overpowered.

Beside the spring on the other side of the path the searchers found the bit of paper in which her lunch had been wrapped and the bottle she used for her coffee.

A bloodhound was brought to the scene from Occoquan. A blue working shirt and an ax were taken from Hall's home and brought to the scene, but the searching parties had traversed the surrounding ground so much that the hound was unable to follow the scent. A few hours later it was learned Hall had gone to Accotink, and the sheriff Immediately went for him.

Murmurings Against Hall.

By Wednesday afternoon murmurings against Hall were being heard in Burke, and Sheriff Allison took a round-about way in his automobile in getting the suspect to the Fairfax jail.

Eva Roy was an amiable and studious child, and was much liked and admired. She attended school in Burke and took a number of prizes for her school work at the county fair at Fairfax last year.

Her father is a Dane, and was a farmer in Redwood county, Minnesota, until five years ago, when he bought the farm at Burke. Eva's mother died in Minnesota.

"It is one of those things a man never gets over," was all the heartbroken father could say as he tried to divert his mind by working about his farm yesterday afternoon.

Eva would have been my great-great Aunt, as Caroline was my Great Grandmother. Our family has heard the stories of Eva appearing over the years and it has been interesting reading some of the stories.

I find it an interesting turn to the story that the murderer was "not" found; the family story has been the murderer was found and handled.

My family owned the farm on Sydenstricker up until a couple of years ago and it was sold by extended family. The original home burned and the house that stands now was the replacement built.

Thank you to all for sharing your stories - I'm always interested in reading about Eva, who my Grandmother was named after.

Eva would not hurt anyone. I have seen her back in the 1980s.

This is fascinating! I'm trying to better understand where it was that her body was located? Would it have been closer to the area near the Burke Nursery, or would it have been closer to the trail closer to the Burke Centre VRE?

I saw her near the lake Accotink dam a year or two after the dam was broken up by hurricane Agnes. I will never forget that day.

I see that this is the first post in four years, but I would love to keep this conversation going. I am just now learning about Eva, her murder and her ghost. Look, I'm all for having fun and joking around about...well, about everything. But I also think things should be looked at and studied seriously. My father is 97 in a few months -- a good long life, but not ancient history. Until the time he was born, serious, intelligent astronomers with the best equipment then existing thought that the sky we could see -- the Milky Way Galaxy -- was the entire universe. Now, we know that it is just one of at least a hundred billion galaxies. Think of all the stuff we've learned in that century -- computers (in our pockets!); perfected birth control; cures for diseases that plagued man (The Plague, for one) for millennia; and on and on and on. Ghosts or spirits might well be just one of those things we don't understand yet. I am a big skeptic about lots of things, but I admit I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. A great article I read about alien abductions -- which was debunking the whole thing -- said, 'But just like UFOs, there was and is SOMETHING going on, that should be continued to be studied.'
I get really angry when I see fake ghost hunters, or fortune tellers bilking people, or the guy who shot the most famous picture of the Loch Ness monster who, decades later, on his deathbed, confessed to faking it. And I really applaud people who use good scientific method and an open mind to explore things. (I guess I applaud the guy who, ready to Meet his Maker, came clean about the photo.)

When I read someone who says, This is the first time I heard of Eva or her ghost, but I used to live around there, and this happened to me when I was young, and I'm now connecting the dots, well, I sit up and take notice. Same when a teacher sees a girl disappear before her eyes, or a cop. People like that make official reports, have their credibility and careers on the line when they say stuff like that -- just like trained airline pilots who report UFOs. And when a group of people see or hear something, again, what's happening? Is the wind howling, are they predisposed to hear something? Are they stoned? Is someone dressing up, hiding at night in a supposedly haunted forest just to fake somebody out? (That last one is harder for me, a skeptic, to accept than the ghost of a murdered girl.) There is a lot of conflicting evidence, sure -- and, hey, I'm not trying to scold. But a problematic thread runs through a lot of modern humankind now -- religiously, economically, politically, etc. And that is, 'Since I believe A, B and C -- since this is what I read, this is what my parents taught me, this is what feels good to me -- then you should, too.' Sometimes, it's 'Then you MUST, too, or I'll kill ya.'
So I guess what this long rant is about is, with ghosts or anything else, let's study, let's learn, let's listen to each other, let's keep our minds open.

See? See? I TRULY BELIEVED that there had been no posts since 2017, but I was (dead) wrong. I didn't see that that was just the first page! I was quite sincere in my beliefs, but an idiot. The evidence was right there and I didn't see it.

Eva is out there all right. I grew up in Kings park and as a kid I hiked along accotink creek all the time and that old railway bed that runs from Interstate van lines on Rolling road to Accotink park. I am not the only one who saw her back in the 1970s.

This is the time of year that Eva shows herself the most.

When I was a teenager we would rent a canoe from the Lake Accotink marina shortly after some heavy rain when the water in the creek was high. We would canoe beyond the lake paddling upstream all the way to the Kings park area. One day we saw a young girl playing by the edge of the creek, she looked up at us for a moment and then vanished. I am sure this was Eva. This all took place around 1983.

Ghosts do not show up in pictures.

The 2nd weekend in October is when Eva shows herself the most. I will be on the Lee Chapel grounds at sunset if anyone wants to come by.

A few of us where at the cemetery last night. It was kind of wild with that cold front moving in, it was all windy and leaves were swirling everywhere. I called out to Eva and we all felt her presence.

Eva has been spotted hundreds of times. The Fairfax county library documented this years ago.

Eva voted democrat the last few elections

Eva roy lived in the house next to pohick library. Most of you guys take this as a joke.she was a real person, and what happened to her was tragic. They never found her murderer. Her family STILL owns the home. The jerman's are relatives to her. Have some damn respect for the dead. Learning about the history is understandable but the crude comments are embarrassing to yourself. God forbid something tragic would happen to yourself or your family and be the joke of the town. May she rest in peace and her murderer burn in hell!

Eva is a local legend. I have heard stories about her for over 30 years. No disrespect intended.
