X marks in red crayons in Chantilly
Posted by: Western Fairfax Resident ()
Date: July 19, 2012 07:33PM

Yesterday I noticed a red x drawn in crayon on the curb by my mailbox. When I walked the dog I noticed more houses with the same thing in the same spot. Seemingly random choice of houses. All told out of 50 or so houses in my neighborhood, 14 had the red x, 3 had a /, and one looked like the #9. Today I drove through Armfield Farms and at least on the main road through the neighborhood there were also red x marks. A few of the houses right in front of the pool were marked. Anyone know anything about this? Reminds me of hobo marks but I've found some stuff on Internet that says its a new burglars code? Looking to solve this mystery.

They're just marking the areas where they need to dig. The different colors represent the different utilities buried there.

Do the characters "M", "S", "1", "3" appear anywhere?

They showed up in the Armfield Farm and Chantilly Green neighborhoods. No is sure what they mean, but they could be marks to say someone is or is not at home during the day.

Looks to be solved. If Alterra Pest Control comes knocking on your door, call police. Let them ask to see the license to solicit door to door in neighborhoods that don't allow it.

In CA they used blue crayons, but same thing with marking the sidewalk: http://www.yelp.com/biz/alterra-pest-control-chatsworth

It's probably a door to door sales group marking where they've been.

One came to our neighborhood last week and we got visited twice in the same afternoon. When I blasted the guy for coming a second time, he said, 'oh sorry, the other guy was supposed to leave a mark where he'd been'

Why do people still do door to door sales? Are there actually any profitable business models left?

It seems these days that the volume of purchasing made at the doorstep is minuscule compared to a generation or two ago, so how can anyone sell enough to cover their time and costs? Email spammers "hit percentage" has steadily gone down the past 15 years or so, but they basically have no extra overhead costs as they pump up the volume to compensate - something not replicable for door-to-door sales.

Does anyone know the mark for "been here, they aren't buying and don't waste time anymore"? Is that the X? I'll pre-mark and save myself some hassle.

It means the county is exercising it's Imminent Domain right on your property, and your home will be demolished for a new day laborer site/Asian Supermarket/Walgreens/Capital One Bank.

I guess home service type work still goes door-to-door - but yeah, don't see too many dictionary and vacuum cleaner salesmen at your door these days =)

I was just reading through some of the yelp comments left by people. Lot of ass holes around here. Alterra and some other company have knocked on my door once this year. Both were polite and very friendly when i spoke to them.

I was talking to first guy for a bit and learned he was from Utah and just graduated from BYU. Considering a lot of people transplant here from other areas i hadn't given it much thought until the second compnay came a knockin.

Got talking to this guy to learn that he to is from Utah and attended BYU.

Thinking this to be kind of strange coincidence I asked him why all the BYU kids were out here selling pest control services.

He obliged my question and said something to effect of "Companys know that moromans are good at handeling rejection because they go door knocking while on their missions and are used to having doors slammed in their faces"

Alterra guy just rang the bell selling pest control. I immediately said "No thanks" and "BTW - are you mormon?" and he said "How did you know?" - then told him about this site and thread.

Maybe I should go check for marks on the curb, eh?

I literally pity those guys - they are victims of scams greater than the victims they sell subscriptions to (even if the victims' victims never get a magazine!).

They get convinced by a smooth talker who came around to their neighborhoods to go and sell door-to-door sometimes HUNDREDS of miles from where they live (so they can't quit). They are put up in cheap hotels that THEY have to pay for from their "profits". They work a huge number of hours per day AND they have to produce or they're fired - right where they are.

I'd bet they end up with wages significantly less than if they had worked minimum wage somewhere.

The folks who drive them around, of course, make a bundle.

I once spent something like 15 minutes talking to this one guy

Google generates a tremendous number of hits when looking for the scam, for example:

I must be getting old and introverted... Marketing is getting even more invasive and sociopathic.

Marking your homes... Like those free ad-filled newspapers - your opt-out is a reflective dot on your mailbox. Other papers used orange spray paint. Now you have crayon marks.

They just want to do the minimum necessary to not get in trouble while bothering everybody with their pitch.

I'm getting sick of marketing bursting out of every conceivable source.

Shit stuck to your doors, mailboxes, and thrown in your driveway.
Shit stuffed in your mailbox.
Shit signs stuck in the ground in medians and on the side of the road.
Shit stuck under your windshield wipers.
Shit handed to you as you walk down the street.
Shit printed on big arrow signs that jackoffs are spinning around on street corners.
Calls on your phone - and the do-not-call registry just filters it down to criminals (and politicians, which are one and the same)
Ignorant illiterate shitheads that ignore the "No Soliciting" sign
Spam in our email - and the filters sometimes discard legitimate messages

Not one of these assholes cares about their negative impact on their targets. Sure, each one by itself occasionally is not a big deal. More and more people are doing it via more and more channels and it is getting to be too much.

I worked for Alterra Pest Control and also another company doing door to door sales and was the manager of a sales team for both. The mark on the curb is just to mark where the sales rep had been and is usually just crayon (not a permanent marker which would only last about 2 x's). It wears off dont worry.

As for the job itself, it's a pretty good way for college students to make enough to pay for college during the year and though there are always bad apples, most of the sales reps are polite and honest. I myself walked away from many doors instead if lying to make a sale.

Please be polite to these young men. Most of them work a job that can be very grueling and remember that unless you work for the government, your job exists because of someone doing the sales side of your company.

Next time they stop by listen to their approach, offer them some water, and if you don't want Alterra to kill your bugs then politely decline and don't lose sleep over the x on your sidewalk.

I also sell pest control door to door. Most companies that do door to door sales make the mark on the drive way/sidewalk. 1 slash means person contacted but come back later, and x means customer said no or was sold. As for the money I am 21 years old and I make enough money in one summer to pay for a year of college. I make more than most. 35k is what I project I will make in 4 months so when someone is rude to me I just laugh and remember I make more than them.

I have slash marks on my driveway too. 1 for every unsolicited door to door douchebag that I have to escort off my property.

Is it legal for them to leave a mark? I'd fucking shoot someone's hand off if I caught them marking shit on my driveway or by my mailbox.

"My friend" pulled a pistol out on someone that was caught putting shit under their windshield wipers in the grocery store parking lot. I would pray that that person is not caught advertising again.

This is from research I've done, can't say for sure. "These marks are for people who have been marked out to be removed at 4 am from their homes under the Patriot Act. Without explanation that is. And taken to camps. the blue and red are people who have been against the new regime here in the States and will be interroigated and killed at some point, the yellow are going to be "Re-educated" for NWO. Its scary whats happening out there.

It is illegal for them to do this on your property...

Acts punished: intentionally destroying, damaging, defacing, or removing property belonging to someone else. Generally, regardless of what kind of property you destroy in Virginia, the offense will be classified as a misdemeanor or a felony based on the value of the destruction. This crime has nothing to do with theft – larcenies are punished separately in VA.

Penalty: Virginia law 18.2-137 punishes vandalism as a Class 6 felony when the value of or damage to the property is $1,000 or higher. The exact same act is punished as a Class 1 misdemeanor when the value of or damage to the property is less than $1,000. If you are convicted of this crime, the court will likely order you to pay restitution to the victim.

The amount of loss caused by the destruction, defacing, damage or removal of such property, memorial or monument may be established in a court of law by proving the fair market cost of repair or fair market replacement value. A witness who is familiar with the destroyed property may testify in court as to the value and that testimony may be considered sufficient by the judge to establish that number.

Destruction of property / vandalism may also be charged under the following code sections:
15.2-1812.2 – Willful and malicious damage to or defacement of public or private facilities
18.2-135. Destruction of posted signs; posting land of another
18.2-137. Injuring, etc., any property, monument, etc.
18.2-140. Destruction of trees, shrubs, etc.
18.2-162. Damage or trespass to public services or utilities
