Any Stores Still Have 100 Watt Lightbulbs?
Posted by: Getting Dark ()

Are 100 watt light bulbs available any stores in Fairfax County? They are legal until the end of the year and I don't want to buy the government mandated "screw" bulbs.

Try going to Lowes. They might have 100 watt light bulbs.

I found out about the ban on 100 watt light bulbs right after buying several lamps that take 100 watt bulbs. Aggravating. I've checked twice at Home Depot - they don't have any 100 watt bulbs. My guess is Lowes is the same.

I did find 100 watt GE Reveal clear bulbs at Target. They look like regular bulbs, but I think they have a halogen center. They look great and they aren't hot like regular halogens. They're also available on-line.

How silly. CFL's are every bit as good as incandescents for nearly every purpose.

No they are not. They can't be used in garage door openers, they can't be used with dimmers, and for many people they give them headaches. You don't have to follow special clean up instructions if an incadescent bulb breaks. We can't have lead in our paint but we can have mercury in our light bulbs.

I tried Lowes in Chantilly and they were out of them. home Depot used to have a ton of them earlier this year but no longer do. Maybe they did not want to be caught with any inventory at year's end.

This.

I'm stockpiling lower wattage lightbulbs as they will be phased out of the next few years. I've been buying a pack each time I go to Target.

Sorry, but IMO CFLs are very subpar overall. The light is NEVER the same, even when it tries to emulate incandescent lighting. Also, they have to warm-up, and that's a no-go for security or exterior area lighting. Another issue is that CFLs really don't give off any heat, and while some might tout this as a sign of increased efficiency, in some instances it actually takes away efficiency from elsewhere (ie, It naturally provides warmth to rooms during colder months or in colder climates, and that might decrease a heating bill (Obviously one might argue the opposite for summer months or warmer climates), and I know of some people for instance who don't have to insulate certain pipes in shed areas all due to incandescent bulbs).

Instead of hitting us at the household level with regards to lightbulbs and how our toilets flush, how about increasing overall energy production efficiency?

I have about 400 100-watt bulbs. All of the Reveal type. Long enough to last me until I die. I've also sticked up on the 75-watt. 60-watt are next.

The halogen ones suck. They dim about 30 seconds after being turned on.

If I don't use them all up, my kids will be going through the workshop sayin' "Dad was weird!"

Went to Batteries Plus last week for my watch battery, they now sell light bulbs. They had 100 watt incandescents, CFLs and more. BTW - the staff knew a lot about lighting and I wound up with some LEDs that I really like.

I have looked at LEDs and like the technology. Most replacements for 100 watters that I see are about $30. Is that about the price at Batteries Plus? Any new gains in technology going to bring the price down soon?

Try Walgreens, Cvs and Giant. I hate the new bulbs and guess what? When they break, I just toss them. Screw it.

Thrift stores also have tons, new in package...I have those cheesy 80s Hollywood mirror lights in our MBR and buy those there too.

For a living room or something I have no problem with the CFLs we have; color does not appear much (if any) different from incandescents. For a room that needs QUICK full light, however, they suck (like, say, a pantry) - they start immediately, of course, but take a relatively long time to get to full light output - when I turn on my workshop or exercise area lights I usually find something else to do until the brightness is correct.

As far as finding 100W incandescents - maybe the dollar stores?

LED prices are coming down. The drawback to those is you need to leave them on for a few minutes when you turn them on or else you risk reducing lifespan of the bulb.

CFL's take a minute or so to brighten up, but if you're just getting something out of the pantry real fast, who cares if the light is perfect? Most of the time you don't even need the light at all since the kitchen light is probably already on. It's just force of habit that you're turning one on in the first place (in most cases).

I'm sick and tired of listening to fat old people say that they don't look as pretty in CFL light in their bathrooms. You're fat and old. Nobody cares how you look. Get over yourself.

The reason for all this is that changing out light bulbs is the simplest and cheapest way to conserve electricity, which benefits your wallet, the air you breathe and the water you drink. You know how you guys call yourselves "CONSERVatives?" Try earning the label.

The problem with LEDs is cost. The argument is that they will last longer. Maybe they do in theory but I find myslef replacing them in our recessed fixtures about as often as I did the old incandescents.

My question would be are 100W bulbs really needed? I'm still seeing 65-75W bulbs around.

I'm not concerned about the cost, I can afford to run a 100 watt light bulb, Which if I break it will not pollute the air with mercury vapors. I do that because I care about the air I breathe. I also care about the water I drink and use a water filter.

And yet you don't understand how much more mercury is released into your water by mining and burning the extra coal that powers your preferred, less efficient, light bulb.

You're better off with the CFL's.

I do understand. The answer is zero if I acept your theory that all my electricity is generated by coal. If it is produced by other means it only gets better. If the government screw bulbs use 25% of the electricity of a normal 100 watt incadescent bulb, then if 4 people use the government screw bulbs, I can use one normal 100 watt incadescent light bulb with no effect on mercury released into the water or additional mining. No additional electricity is needed. I know I will have no problem finding many people that will change over to the government screw bulbs as I live close to Falls Church.

But I see your point, get the mercury out of the water and into the air in your homes.

I paid $17.99 for a 60 watt regular LED bulb. It is a "omni-directional"? which I guess means it gives out more light then the older LED. All I know is that it is a hell of lot better the piece of crap Feit LED bulb that my spouse bought at Costco.

Incandescent bulbs are far more efficient than fluorecent bulbs. Fluorecent bulbs are made from hundreds of parts that have to be shipped all over the world. That's why they're more expensive, even though the cost of oil is subsidized. The heat from an incandescent bulb is not normally a waste, and fluorecent bulbs consume ten times as much power when turned on and off. They also have irregular lifespans. No one wants to include any of this in the accounting, yet they see it as no problem to include some phony numbers about mercury from the power plant. Those numbers are fraudulent and shouldn't be used anyway. That's a completely seperate issue in every way.

A couple of years ago, I received a $250 Home depot gift card. I bought light bulbs. $250 worth of incandescent light bulbs. 60/75/100 watts, 3 ways, whatever. People stared at my cart.

They are stored in my basement. When I need a lightbulb now, I still go to teh store. This is my stash for the new CFL era....as they phase out over the next several years.

Want a 100 watt bulb OP? $20....each...sold in packs of 4.

Previous renter of the townhouse I bought had CFL's in just about everything other than the recessed lights in the Kitchen and the living room. I ended up replaceing one of them in the bathroom and got one king that I didn't mind as it came on really fast and was bright as shit. The rest have the yellow/green cast in them that I hate.

I went up to Lowes and bought a bunch of LED's for my breakfast nook light. It takes 7 bulbs and one flood. I really like the flood light LED that I bought. The replacement bulbs are nice, but they are brighter than the sun. they were supposed to be the softer color (I don't remember the Kelvin number) but they are pure white. I almost have to have sunglasses on when people are over and I have them turned on. So for the time being, I am going to let the LED bulbs mature a little and drop in price.

You see, Congress had to pass a law to rid us of the old incandescent bulbs because they were still being made in the USA, in spite of 'free trade'.

Now we import all our CFL bulbs from China.

And the bulbs are just the same as incandescent ones except:

* They're a completely different color light.
* They emit ultraviolet light, which causes skin cancer and eye damage.
* The bulbs provide an efficient way for China to get rid of their toxic stores of mercury.

And remember if you break one, you're fucked.

From the EPA's own guide on how to clean up a broken CFL bulbs:

EVACUATE THE ROOM!
OPEN WINDOWS AND AIR IT OUT FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES!!!!
SHUT DOWN ANY AC OR HEATING SYSTEM YOU HAVE RUNNING!
JESUS CHRIST, DON'T VACUUM THAT GLASS UP!!!!
Continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours (That's NOT a joke).

http://www.epa.gov/cfl/cflcleanup.html

But other than that, CFLs are basically the same as incandescent bulbs.

*Mercury vapor can cause effects in the central and peripheral nervous systems, lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes in humans. It is also mutagenic and affects the immune system
http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/healthguidelines/mercuryvapor/recognition.html/

But hey, that lower electric bill (by $0.23) is pretty nice, isn't it??

I appreciate the offer. I am stocking up my reserve also, I might have 100 or so 100 watt bulbs. Next year it will be 75 watters.

Like FusilliJerry I am waiting for LED bulbs to come down and the technology to mature a bit more. By that time I can sell my remaining 100 watters for $20 each and buy the LED bulbs.

By the way Trogdor!, nice summation of the screw bulbs.
