Officer-Involved Shooting in the
Mount Vernon Area

Mount Vernon Police District – Police are investigating an overnight officer-involved shooting that left one person dead. Around 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, two officers observed two males acting suspiciously in the area of Frye Road and Madge Lane. The officers approached both males and one fled on foot.

The two officers briefly pursued the man and attempted to detain him. During the struggle the suspect produced a handgun and fired shots toward the officers. One officer returned fire, striking the suspect. The man was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. The second suspect fled on foot. Neither officer required medical treatment at the scene.

This investigation is ongoing. The deceased’s identity is not yet available for release. The two officers will be placed on routine administrative leave. All information provided in this release is based on preliminary investigation and may be subject to revision as the investigation continues.

Honest question: Why are the officers put on leave?

For their safety? While an investigation is done? I don't get it.

For one thing, all officer involved shootings are investigated. It's usually standard procedure that any officer under investigation is put on leave until it's completed.

For another thing, shootings aren't typically like you see on TV where the most lingering effect on the officer is ringing ears. Shooting and killing another person, even when justified, is often traumatic for the officer involved. The leave gives him time to process what happened away from the job and begin the recovery process.

Well apparently he only had 16 friends, so it will be a pretty low-key funeral I guess.
