Sky Writing in restricted air space?

This morning at about 10AM, I saw 6 or 7 planes fly in a grouping over the Herndon/Reston/Vienna area doing sky writing. A few of my co workers saw this too.

Due to the breeze, the smoked words quickly dissipated, and the only word I could read was “GREAT” .

The planes flew in an easterly direction. That’s all I have.

I can’t imagine permission being granted to any commercial advertiser in our restricted fly zone. Right??

Anyone see this….or have any ideas?

I've seen it happen twice a few years ago from the Tysons area. It was sort of to the west, and I assumed it had something to do with a Wolftrap event, because the planes were sort of in that direction.

Herndon/Reston/Vienna is restricted airspace? Since when?

It's class B airspace with an ADIZ (Air Defense ID Zone). Anyone can fly in it with a transponder, discrete beacon code, and two way communication. Just have to talk to Flight Service first.

Duh

Bob,

Your a idiot, Period. Nothing more or nothing less. Been in the business for awhile. Regardless of what the info is, you are just and idiot.

Because you are informed by Google or Wiki doesnt mean others arent subject experts or sarcastic assholes.

Maybe it has something do to with the big Air Show at Andrews this weekend. Practice flight?

Lurker....That would make sense.....since it was a tight formation..of 6 or 7 planes....too far away for me to identify...and, Airforce would easily get clearence.

..but,Adam, I like the Geico commercial idea!

Looks like "Adam" was correct.....GEICO is creative!

WELCOME TO GEICO SKYTYPERS

The World famous GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team is a proud flight squadron of six vintage World War II airplanes that perform at air shows throughout the United States. They are the only existing World War II civilian squadron flying today, presently sponsored by GEICO Insurance. This unique flight team makes only a few select appearances every year in front of thousands of spectators. The six of eleven remaining vintage SNJ-2’s demonstrate low level precision flying as well as deliver aerial messages, known as Skytyping, 10,000 feet up in the air, as tall as the Empire State Building, and eight miles wide. The letters can be seen for 15 miles in any direction or nearly 400 square miles. Unlike skywriting, which utilizes a single airplane which takes approximately 3 seconds to form a letter.

Okay…I know this is very strangely coincidental….

But, at about 1pm today, I noticed the Good Year Blimp go flying by my window….near the Dulles Toll road heading west!

That's the Fairfax County Police Department's new cruiser. Or didn't you already learn that on the Underground?
