Gravelly Point in Arlington is a fun place for picnic dates. It's right along the river, there are people around, you can see the monuments, and you have an awesome view of planes taking off and landing at National. It's definitely something different. It's not quiet and secluded, but if this is your first time out with the girl I'm guessing you're not looking for a quiet romantic spot just yet. Gravelly Point is a cool little park, I've spent many a fun day hanging out down there.

Here are a couple of places a pit in the country...

Sky Meadows State Park
http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/sky.shtml

It is in Virginia's wine country. It includes a nice historic house and quaint, rolling hills. Also, part of the Appalachian Trail runs through the property, if you want to take a walk. It is just on the other side of "The Plains."

There is also the Virginia State Arboretum...

Similar to Sky Meadows, but with more rolling hills and stone country walls. The arboretum might be a bit more secluded than you want for a first date, though. Both places are in wine and horse country. If you are old enough, you might want to check out a vineyard while you are there.

I would probably go with one of the parks off the Potomac like Great Falls. If you want a quiet spot hike down on of the trails a little bit. Pohick Bay also has some nice spots - http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/pohickbay/

If you don't mind some people around try one of the shows at Wolf Trap and get lawn seats. They'll let you take in a blanket and a picnic basket, plus you know how women love a dancing and music. A nice picnic basket, a good bottle of wine and some fine food is sure to please. http://www.wolftrap.org/Find_Performances_and_Events.aspx

If you don't mind driving a little, Skyline drive and the Shenadohah - http://www.nps.gov/shen/

Riverbend Park. Hike up river about a 1/2 mile and find a path to the riverbank.
Privacy, atmosphere, scenery. You got it all.
