To all of the coaches on ffxu,

Among your peers, who are the best position coaches in the region? Who are the best Quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back, etc coaches around?

If I wanted my 9th grade son, who is a running back/ slot receiver to learn from the best, who would I take him to?

All of the Concorde District teams will be a factor in the Northern Region but a lot of how the season unfolds will be dependent upon injuries and the development of younger players. In addition to the Concorde District teams, possibly minus Herndon, you will have the traditional powers of Lake Braddock and Yorktown contributing to the race.

The backlash against foolishness like artificial turf and closing libraries is going to mean cuts, if not the outright cessation of, the County's extensive football programs. This is not Texas, go there if you want football instead of education.

AJ Turner, #23, Junior. Will start at a wing. Their best player and will probably be one of the two best running backs in the region (Pierson-el).

Taylor Boose, #15, Junior. Most likely replacement for Martey at fullback. A solid player, and was good in relief for Martey when he tore his ACL last year.

Xavier Nickens-Yzer, #4, Junior. Most likely at wing. Heard that he was just playing defense, but played wing last year and with Martey gone, they need another body. Very explosive, returned two kicks for touchdowns.

Scotty Walter, #10, Senior. Will start at quarterback. Not a great passer, but has some targets (Tutt, Heiner). Very athletic for his size, and a power runner.

That's my projection for their starting backfield. Other things could happen, I don't think they will, but I'm not completey sure.

Also heard that Martey is redoing his junior year and will graduate in '15 from flint hill. Not completely sure but if it is true but if it is, it almost serves as another year of eligibility after he missed last year. Either way, I wish him the best of luck.

I guess you forgot about Stewart from Yorktown and Wilson from Robinson for some reason. Turner is top 5 or 6 in the region.

Should be ranked:
1) Stewart - Yorktown
T2) Pierson-el - West Potomac
T3) Wilson - Robinson
4) Nick Scott - Fairfax
5) Turner - Centreville

Everyone saying negative things about my brother Christian Martey are pathetic. He is just a kid...leave him alone. He loved Centreville, but after seein how people were treating him like the head coach (haddock) I am glad he left. He loves football, but also cares about his grades. Leaving was both an academic and athletic decision....not a selfish one. Coach Haddock is pathetic and so is the father of one of the players texting my brother about his decision. Flint Hill is a great school and the head coach actually cares about their players.

Centreville has a great squad still. Chill out. Sheesh.

And to clarify, I'm saying the coach started treating him differently once he got wind of my brother trying to leave. I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just defending my brother because he doesn't deserve this or anything that came from his choice to transfer. Coach Haddock has issues and only cares about himself and winning....not his players.

Where on this thread has anyone said anything bad about Martey? All I see is people saying he is leaving and headed to Flint Hill and wishing him well! If you are his brother maybe you can answer the question, why he would leave a state championship level team to play at Flint Hill? Nothing wrong with Flint Hill it is as good a school as money can buy, BUT they sure do not play the same level of Football as Centreville.

For those of you that followed the new conference alignments, The Concorde and Patriot districts remained rather untouched while the Liberty/National got split into D6 and D5, however entering what is the remnant of the Northern Region are Osbourn, Osbourn Park, Battlefield, Stonewall Jackson and Patriot High Schools all from the Northwest Region. Does completely jumping region have an effect on either the new teams or the old teams of the new 6A-North either in the regular season or Playoffs?

Considering that Battlefield (2010) and Osbourn (2006) have won state championships recently it certainly adds some better football programs into 6A North.

However, it's kind of hard to wrap my head around how it's all going to work.

The old 6A Northern Region was 15 teams:

Centreville (Concorde)
Chantilly (Concorde)
Herndon (Concorde)
Oakton (Concorde)
Robinson (Concorde)
Westfield (Concorde)
Washington-Lee (National)
Annandale (Patriot)
Lake Braddock (Patriot)
T.C. Williams (Patriot)
West Potomac (Patriot)
West Springfield (Patriot)
Fairfax (Liberty)
South Lakes (Liberty)
W.T. Woodson (Liberty)

All of the above are still 6A and in 6A North - just 11 additional teams thrown in:

Langley (Liberty 5A)
Madison (Liberty 5A)
McLean (Liberty 5A)
Hayfield (National 5A)
Yorktown (National 5A)
South County (Patriot 5A)
Battlefield (Cedar Run 6A)
Stonewall Jackson (Cedar Run 6A)
Osbourn (Cedar Run 6A)
Osbourn Park (Cardinal 6A)
Patriot (Cedar Run 6A)

Are there going to be Conference Champions? All-Conference teams?

Also, if I understand correctly 16 of the 26 teams will make the playoffs? Is that really correct?

Seriously, I believe that everyone would like to know of the real reason for Christian leaving Centreville for Flint Hill. Did he need assistance with his studies, is he not completely healed from his injury, not going to get enough playing time, or was there irreconcilable conflict with the coach?

The new system is explained in detail on this site at: http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/950699/1020765.html#msg-1020765

Bottom line is districts still exist and teams will play all the same district opponents, best district record will be the district champion - all the same as it's been for the past decade or so. What has changed is who is in 6A north per the above post and the playoff system. Playoff's are determined entirely by power points (the PP system was modified slightly) for the top 16. First round will be 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15 etc. The winner of the 6A final game will be the Regional Champion and will play the 6A South Champion for the state championship. This is the same number of playoff games as in the past, but with only 2 regions the regional final and state semi-final are now the same game.

While other sports will have conference playoffs/champions - football will not. From a gym banner standpoint for football you can only be a District Champion, Regional Champion and State Champion.

There will be All-Conference teams and to make it on-to the All-Region Team you have to be 1st team all conference. Editorial: I think this is really dumb. While it works fine for conference 5 and 7 which are the same as their district alignments. For conference 6 which has both Liberty District and National District teams coaches will be voting on players (or not) on teams they never played - Yorktown and WNL only play one liberty district team while Hayfield plays NONE. These teams will get screwed in the voting! Also, if the best two running backs in the region happen to be in the same conference only one of them will get region honors.

Tell me how Martey's family can afford the 30 grand/year it costs to go to Flint Hill?

Hmmm, I guess Verbanic is now in the position to offer "scholarships" to kids to play football. Will Flint Hill soon become NOVA's version of Good Counsel/Dematha where talented athletes get a private school education for free simply because they can dunk a basketball or run a 4.4. 40?

Perhaps Stu Vetter can come out of retirement and coach FHS basketball and restore it to the glory years of the early 90s when he was there coaching Dennis Scott and the like?

High school football is SO irrelevant at the end of the day. Today's "touchdown king" will be working for Zerin or Vector Marketing soon. Maybe he'll go door to door in his letterman jacket, hoping it will boost sales?

He will have some nice memories of adolescent sex and playing on turf, just like a real football player. But then **BANG** there's that quota to match, and that girl in personnel is just NOT into him…

Who is advising this kid? You can go play for Flint Hill, a great school but below average football, re classify to be a Junior again, and hope the schools that were looking at you when you played for Centreville come around OR you play for a team that will probably play 14-15 games this year against the best talent in the state and have everyone watching you, coming to your practices and games. Get your offer from the school you were hoping to go to and start College next year. If for some reason you don't get an offer, you can do a prep year and get that extra year. Sounds like Coach V got in someone's ear and sold them on the lesser choice. Lets hope he has a good year, because if he doesn't, is he guaranteed another scholarship next year? if not who's going to pony up the 30K for tuition?

Went to the Oakton vs. Hylton scrimmage at Madison HS last week. Oakton looked terrible and Hylton looked in midseason form. Hylton's starters scored on their first two possessions with ease mixing up the run with the passing game. The Oakton D-Line was very small compared to Hylton's O-Line and they were getting blown off the ball most of the game. On offense Oakton's QB was being forced to roll out of the pocket causing him to throw some awful looking passes. He was sacked three times in the first half. Oakton's O-Line couldn't stop Hylton's massive D-line from pushing them back, freeing up linebackers and safeties to make big plays. Oakton has one kid at runningback/fullback (#1) who will be their main threat this fall. He didn't have much running room at all that night and I think his biggest run came against second stringers on a fullback dive. Oakton only crossed the 50 three times the whole scrimmage and their drives all stalled after that. From talking with people there in the stands the final was Hylton 49 and Oakton 0.

You are right, Oakton did not look very good at all the other night - they actually were awful. And since I was at both games I can assure you they looked about as good as they did at this time last year when they also scrimmaged Hylton - just pathetic. Who knows... maybe both of these teams will again go on to play later in fall then any other team in their region.

Or perhaps this year will be different. C'ville could live up to all their hype (last year they slapped OHS silly and then lost the rubber-match); Westfield will go three deep at every position and run the table (last year they too lost their rubber-match with OHS after running the table); Robinson will return to past glory (ehh... no need for a rubber-match last year); and Henderson will dominate NR FB (OHS coaches actually enjoyed feeding the LB coaching staff a big piece of humble-pie for their class-less/smack-talking 2011 playoff sins).

I love how HS FB can be a very redemptive therapy! :-)

Do you think Robinson will actually be able to turn the corner and regain their domination of Fairfax this quickly. I know they have a great Head Coach and a load of tallent, but will he actually be able to change all the wrong so quickly? Do you think Centreville and Lake Braddock are legit this year or do they look good only on paper?
