I was standing next to my car at Sheraton Premier Hotel in Tysons Corner
(Rt 7 & Dulles Toll Road)

It felt like a little rumble, but nothing major... not like the last
earthquake in Virginia a few years ago... w

Did you only feel the earthquake, or were you also able to hear something?

The last major earth quake in VA was a few years ago. That one was 4.5 or
something. Would not want to be anywhere near the center... :)

Psssh, 1.8. Try living in Japan for two years where you feel 1.8 earthquakes a few times a week, and being only a few hundred miles from an 8.3. Now that's gangster.

I know... 1.8 is really nothing... but earthquakes are very rare here... :)

the biggest earthquake that I've personally experienced was 7.1... not fun... :(

True, I'll give you that.

And yeah, evidently I was only a couple hundred miles away from the largest earthquake in 2003.

The epicenter was at NOVA College?

1.8 isn't worth the electrons wasted in this thread. When you hit 5.5, then you're shaking...

Me too!!

From WTOP:
"Earlier, Ft. Belvoir officials told WTOP the rumblings were part of underground construction blasts at the base.
Ft. Belvoir officials said the construction work scheduled for 4:15 p.m. Tuesday began earlier than expected.
They later told WTOP the blasts did not occur and are still scheduled for later in the afternoon.
The blasts are part of the construction at Ft. Belvoir for the new National Geospatial Intelligence Agency."

Way too much of a coincidence! Sounds like the GIA are building tunnels to the Tyson's area and forcing the USGS to cover it up... You heard it here first!

Hmm... now there are guys in black suits at my door...

I was about to say that as well.... the more I think about it, the more suspicious it seems.... when was the last time an earthquake(of any magnitutde) was centered in a residential area?

And when was the last time the military were unsure whether they were or were not responsible for an explosion that was felt across half of a large metropolitan area?

Oh, wait... Iraq... never mind... ;)

As crazy as this sounds at 1:25 or around depending on whose watch you looked at in Ashburn hundreds of bees swarmed out of the ground at my construction site. I do see this as being strange but it did happen.

I was on the phone with a friend of mine who lives in Baileys Crossroads when it happened. A friend of hers from Lake Barcroft also called. They thought it was either a gas line explosion somewhere or the sonic boom of a military overflight. (They didn't know it was an earthquake until I forwarded the Washington Post article to themm...)

So, yeah, you could DEFINITELY hear/feel it a few miles away.

1.8 is not strong enough to be felt, according to Wikipedia, and they're always right.

I'm surprised nobody has yet made a joke about this earthquake
being centered next to the daylaborer hangout spot in Annandale.
(Little River Turnpike)

Finally! :)

Right outside of Fairfax City here, on the Annandale side. I felt it. The whole thing freaked me out for a little while. I think I'm over it now though.
