Has the exposion at Belvior ocured. Apparently they had/have to blast to move rock at the base for new construction?

FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- Don't be alarmed if you hear explosions going off at Fort Belvoir next week.

And if your home shakes a little, it's not an earthquake.

The explosions are part of the growing pains Fort Belvoir will experience as part of the base realignment and closure process.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29 and Friday, May 2, explosives charges will be used to dislodge rocks for construction crews to excavate a site for the new home of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

NGA is largely responsible for mapping related to national security .

NGA's headquarters will move from Bethesda, Md., to Fort Belvoir by September 2011.

It has been confirmed that the blast we heard earlier was a controlled underground blasting at the Engineer Proving Ground located at Backlick Road and 7100 (Fort Belvoir).

Ground rumbles in parts of Northern Virginia
May 6, 2008 - 2:38pm
WASHINGTON - Ground rumblings in parts of Northern Virginia left many people wondering whether they were feeling an earthquake on Tuesday.

In an advisory to federal agencies, FEMA's Operations says that the National Earthquake Information Center is reporting the D.C. area experienced rumblings equivalent to a magnitude 2 to 3 earthquake.

It is unclear whether the rumblings were an actual earthquake or due to another cause, the FEMA advisory says.

The rumblings rattled parts of Northern Virginia - including Vienna, Falls Church, Annandale and Baileys Crossroads - around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Some people tell WTOP the rumbling felt like an earthquake.

There is no word on any damage.

Blasts are scheduled at Ft. Belvoir at 4:15 p.m. The blasts are part of the construction at Ft. Belvoir for the new National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. The agency is moving its headquarters to Ft. Belvoir and as part of the region's base realignment and closure project.

Ft. Belvoir officials say people may feel more rumblings over the new few days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fort Belvoir has developed a website at www.belvoirnewvision.com that provides information, publications, copies of briefings, images, links, photos, newsletters, and even alerts that are sent via email to folks who sign up. The May 2008 newsletter has just been posted and ready for your download.

The alert system and newsletter mailing system already has more than 1,500 people registered for it. You can get information about blasting, construction related traffic, gate closures, and other BRAC issues that may affect the community in advance if you sign up for the email alert.

We encourage everyone to sign up at www.belvoirnewvision.com, use the link on the left called 'Sign up for Construction News," and fill in your information.

We also have a public information meeting on May 28, 2008 from 6:30pm - 9pm at Riverside Elementary School. There will be representatives from the installation, incoming BRAC tenants such as NGA, MDA, and the Community Hospital, as well as VDOT and FHWA with displays ready to help answer any questions.

The briefing begins at 7pm with a Q&A session after the briefing. This specific meeting with focus on the progress of the community hospital but also give an overview of the rest of the BRAC projects.
