Road Improvements (we're getting screwed...again)

Looks like we're getting shortchanged again by the geniuses down in Richmond. This time around it's a 51% cut in funding for road building projects in NoVA. That's a whole heckuva lot of money, hundreds of millions of dollars. I pity the folks getting BRAC'd to Ft. Belvoir- have fun with another 19,000 cars on the road!

So, if you've heard about road improvement projects in your neighborhood, you might want to check again, because it looks like a lot of them aren't going to happen.

I wonder which part of the state will get to use all that money they're saving?

Its just another plot to justify more taxes. Meanwhile, casino's
are operating just across our borders soaking up Va money. Wasnt
the lottery supposed to be used for schools at one point?

Road building, police and schools and providing for the infrastructure of this state is the whole reason we have a state government, so what is the other 49% going towards?

Don't worry though, The guvna is coming to the rescue and raising gas prices to help us all out.

There needs to be a congressional investigation into where Va's tax money is disappearing to. There is NO WAY the state of Va can be this poor.

Shrinking tax base = desperate measures. Without NoVA's excess tax revenue, there's not much for the rest of the state to leech off of.

You guys honestly think Virginia is the only state in this situation? 27 states are facing budget shortfalls for the 2009 fiscal year, adding up to $39 billion. Apparently most state's constitutions don't allow the government to borrow money or run a deficit, so the spending cuts seems to be one of the avenues they have to go. I'm not saying the government's aren't at fault, we all know they have the fiscal responsibility of a crack addict, but I figure I offer some perspective.

Oh, and if you happen to relocate to Northern Virginia for its excellent road system, you might want to look elsewhere.

FYI, of the 19,300 JOBS being shifted to Fort Belvoir from elsewhere in the NCR, approximately 18,800 of them are occupied by people who already live in the region. Even most of the 8,500 NGA folks whose jobs are moving to EPG from Bethesda and other NCR locales already live in Northern Virginia. For most of these folks, their jobs are actually moving CLOSER to where they live.

As most folks in this region realize when they actually think it through, we all live at the "seat of government." There are more federal employees concentrated here than are concentrated anywhere else, because this is where their job is. To work here, as we all know, we live all over the place, from Richmond and beyond to the South, to Baltimore and beyond to the north. Unlike what BRAC is doing in other parts of the country (El Paso is getting 23,000 people in at Fort Bliss, all of whom really are coming from way outside that region, most of 'em bringing along at least two kids and at least two cars), in THIS region, like I said, BRAC is just shuffling in a giant "shell game" jobs that are already here.

It is also important to ANY discussion of BRAC impact on this region to consider that the very same BRAC legislation removes from this region COMPLETELY another 14,500 DOD jobs to places like Texas, Kentucky, Illinois, etc. The analysts tell us that means nearly 40,000 people (families, etc.). We cannot be concerned with how many cars BRAC might put on the roads (or kids that BRAC may bring into the schools) without also giving equal consideration to what BRAC takes from the very same region.

Recommend you check out www.belvoirnewvision.com for a great deal of info you can use to keep up with BRAC-at-Belvoir news.

I think $8.00 a gallon gas will really help the road improvement situation.

it would be $20 before anyone considered driving less. on the other hand, it would be an excellent opportunity to shift to a non-petrol fuel.

Not true. People are already driving less.

Well on the bright side at $20.00 a gallon traffic would no longer be a problem.

Fort Belvoir has developed a website at www.belvoirnewvision.com that provides information, publications, copies of briefings, images, links, photos, newsletters, and even alerts that are sent via email to folks who sign up. The May 2008 newsletter has just been posted and ready for your download.

The alert system and newsletter mailing system already has more than 1,500 people registered for it. You can get information about blasting, construction related traffic, gate closures, and other BRAC issues that may affect the community in advance if you sign up for the email alert.

We encourage everyone to sign up at www.belvoirnewvision.com, use the link on the left called 'Sign up for Construction News," and fill in your information.

We also have a public information meeting on May 28, 2008 from 6:30pm - 9pm at Riverside Elementary School. There will be representatives from the installation, incoming BRAC tenants such as NGA, MDA, and the Community Hospital, as well as VDOT and FHWA with displays ready to help answer any questions.

The briefing begins at 7pm with a Q&A session after the briefing. This specific meeting with focus on the progress of the community hospital but also give an overview of the rest of the BRAC projects.
