Where can I recycle a FIOS backup battery?
Posted by: FIOS User ()

I have an old FIOS backup battery - lead acid, weighs about 5lbs. Where can you recycle these things? I don't want to throw it into the garbage.

VA state law that places that sell them have to take them for recycling.

If you see a Verizon Employee, we recycle them at every garage site that installs/maintains FIOS service.

Home Depot. Just dropped some off yesterday. Same as the batteries for computer backup UPS, alarm systems, invisible fencing, etc.

Any auto repair shop should take it. Whomever recycles their car batteries can recycle this too.

I know the I-66 and I'm sure the I-95 recycling/disposal centers take lead acid batteries. There's a little battery drop-off shack on the I-66 facility toward the exit from the paper bins.

A dead backup FIOS battery is what I wound up with, during the Derecho blackout last June.

VOIP service was out completely.

On top of that, those backup batteries will not be replaced by Verizon for free.

Definitely something to keep in mind when considering FIOS service.

And a serious question - who do you have to kill at VZ to get a replacement?

Good luck. Verizon wants $40.

Amazon = ~$15-$20.

Home Depot, Lowes = ~$28.

If you simply unplug the dead battery, will the Fios box stop the incessant beeping? If we have no power, our phone and Tv won't be working anyway. What use is the battery then?

How about you put it back in the slot where it came from? Mine beeps that it's kaput every 8-10 months or so. I take it out, unplug it for 30 seconds, then put it back in and I get another 8 months or so out of it.

It's a Verizon scam to sell you batteries. I even get an e-mail from them around the same time.

Spot on Chester. My Fios box had been beeping for over 2 months. I followed your advice to unplug, then reconnect the battery and no more beeping.

Fuck that. It's not my hardware...and they are required by law to provide 911 access during a power failure. I guarantee I will be getting them to send me one for free. Stay tuned.

Oh yeah, they make you buy their crappy battery, but you can never buy a set top box. They love to gouge you for that year after year after year.

You can also recycle old batteries at Batteries Plus in Fairfax on Lee Highway. I did get an extra year out of my FIOS battery by unplugging and putting it back in. When that didn't work I got a larger capacity battery at Batteries Plus. I know it was more expensive then ordering online, but I like to shop local when I can. Plus I picked up some sweet LED while I was there.

How long can you leave the dead battery in there before it starts to corrode?

I had this problem about a year ago and did some research on the 'net. The beeping is supposed to be a sign that the battery needs to be replaced, but quite often the battery is still good. To check you need to reset it. Start by looking at the box and you will probably see a red light where it says battery. Open up the box, disconnect the power source and disconnect the battery. Wait about five minutes and then reconnect the battery and power source. Close up the box. If a reset was all that is needed then the battery light will be green.

You can Google this for a better description and set of instructions.

It beeps every 2 months and I have to fuck with the wires so that it will stop. Verizon SUCKS and is not up-to-date with technology!! This is not needed. Every house has multiple cell phones. A back-up battery during power failure just to keep the landline alive is bullshit.

As someone else already pointed out, yeah, that's bullshit. You and the OP are fuckwads. The sole purpose of a backup battery is to provide for a graceful shutdown in the event of a power failure. While landlines are still available the telephone company powers their own lines at various voltages up to 60 volts so you probably don't know enough to safely mess with them but if you want 911 service get a cellphone or a landline. And stop being a fuckwad.

Could the voltage supplied by Verizon thru the old copper telephone lines be used to power a small lightbulb? Or maybe my Tesla automobile? Would be nice to have a free source of electricity.

Light bulb, yes. That's how the lighted dials on corded phones work (and the rest of the phone as well). Tesla not so much unless you're very patient.

With a simple circuit you can use it to charge a phone or other device when power goes down. Assuming that the phone is still up at least.

see batterytech.com

drain it, freeze it while recharging it, which "refreshes the life" lithium batteries for a while

that's totally illegal i'll report you

it's not power your paying for so it's theft

and it tampers with lines your not necessaryily even paying for

AND MORESO it can effect telephones in the area (i hope it does so you get criminal charges when the telephone guy sees your using "green power" to charge your iPad)

If you don't actually want a battery backup, you can ask Verizon to install a regular power module that doesn't use a battery. You'll lose service in a power outage of course, but if you have no power you aren't watching TV anyway. You may have to talk Verizon into it. I had to "ask nicely" a few times (just one phone call) because I was fed up with the beeping/resetting every few months.

A tech at Verizon informed me that when FIos does updates, that impacts your battery connection and sets off that beeping. So he walked me through opening the cover (from the top on my large battery case on the wall), disconnecting the red plug for several seconds and plugging it back in. I usually wait for a beep before plugging back in. The process is also explained in another post here. I don't have Internet phone, was told that I never really needed battery backup, and have never replaced the battery, and have no deterioration of TV or router service as a result.
