ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A bizarre backyard accident has left an Alexandria woman with severe burns.
The Alexandria fire department says the 53-year-old woman was trying to light an outdoor metal fire place on her patio on the 300 block North Fayette Street Saturday night when an accumulation of vapors from the fuel apparently created a flash fire burning the woman substantially.
She has been transported to the burn center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center with second and third degree burns on 80 percent of her body.
Her current condition is not known at this time.

Accumulation of vapors, flash fire... Very good chance gasoline was involved and not just charcoal lighter fluid.

Or it could be the sparker was dead on a gas unit, I have to light from the side and yeah the fireball can be impressive. You don't want to be in front of it though, you have to crouch beside it and stick the match in.

Ive owned about 8 or 9 propane grills over time and within 7 or 8 months Im using a long bic lighter to start the grill. I mean we are working on sending a space craft to Mars but they cant come up with a push igniter that lasts at least a year! Im just surprised more people dont blow themselves up with grills.

@jim143: I agree that gasoline might have been involved. I recall as a kid I was burning our trash in a 55 gallon drum that we used as an incinerator, and I stupidly put a few tablespoons of gasoline into the barrel to get things going. I threw in a lighted match a few seconds later, and KAWHOOOOOOM! most of the trash shot up about 25 feet into the air. I learned my lesson never to use gasoline in this fashion ever again!
