RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia State Police will begin the largest transition of its cruiser fleet in two decades this fall.

The agency has ordered 144 new Ford Taurus Interceptors for about $24,000 apiece. They will replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, which is being phased out now that the automaker has discontinued production of the line.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch ( http://bit.ly/LkZ0BR) reports that the State Police unveiled the new car Friday at an event for its 90 trooper trainees. Spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the new troopers will be the last class to get Crown Vics and the first to get the new Tauruses.

Most of the department's 1,100 Crown Vics will remain on the road for a while, but Geller says the public should also begin seeing the Taureses in October.

Too bad Ford quit making the Crown Vic. The new taurus is a nice cop car and is available in all wheel drive but it is a unibody and will wind up totaled in crash situations and PITT maneuver situations.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIT_maneuver)

The Crown vic's are on a frame and are often easily repaired with parts from other wrecked cop cars. Even if the Crown vic frame was bent it could be straightened and the car repainted and used for other state motorpool assignments that do not require high speed driving. Ford even has a chip that can be removed from the on board computer to limit the speed of the vehicle to 90 mph.
The bottom line is that the taxpayers will be buying more cars.

The caprice is nice and fast, but its no good in the rain or snow. The ford police suv and sedan are the best options. They are both awd and even have a supercharged model.

Good. I'm sick and tired of seeing only geriatrics and cops driving Crown Vics. Now I'll be able to tell the difference.

"forget the taurus, I want that new police caprice they mentioned in the richmond article..."

- Wait until next year and get the Chevy SS. The Caprice is the long wheel-base version of this car. It will will have a shorter wheel-base and have a larger engine. The problem with the L76 is that it has issues with the AFM spec lifters collapsing and trashing the engines in some cases. Just do a search on the couple popular Pontiac G8 boards about the collapsed lifters issues. The G8 GT is the short wheel base version of the Caprice.

- Can't imagine it is much different than the G8 GT. Caprice probably comes with a better suspension thought. If they are putting the Goodyear RS-A's on there like the did the G8 GT non-sport package and the V6 sedan, then they should be replaced with something decent. Lots of G8's had them and it scared the shit out of people and was horrible and snow and the rain. I ran the Conti Extreme-Contact DWS tires on my GT for a year and a half and had no issues with them other than the soft sidewall. Drove around in the snow with them no problem. THe RS-A's are complete shit and dangerous.

Not just the price of the cars, either. From the Times-Dispatch article: "At 250-horsepower, they get an average of 14 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the highway."

thats not bad, but not very acurate. they may get 14/17 mpg if driven the entire time. being a cop, we dont drive all day long. not to mention, cops drive cars very hard, so those numbers dont mean anything but to the private citizens who buy a car. there are long periods of time when the cars are running in park. that throws the mileage out the window. crown vics are horrible on gas. they are slow, large, gas hogs. in a normal shift of 150 miles, the tank will be near empty. the cost of the ford sedans and suv's is only a $2000 difference, and thats with awd on both. its a few thousand more for the supercharged versions.

With all the stop and go traffic around here the auto makers should put hour meters on car like they do airplanes to get a real idea of usage.

2006+ Crown Vics have hour meters which log idle hours in park and neutral.
