Harpers Ferry. Beautiful. I think you can go tubing in the summer as well. One of my fave tourist spots and you feel like you are in the country away from thr concrete jungle!

There is this placed call Washington DC with a few historic sites to see.
Might also try Mount Vernon Mansion, Sully Historic thingamabob, or I hear there is a place up in Great Falls/McLean kinda like Jamestown where the have actors living the lives of settlers in "settlements"
Also, try Arlington National Cementary, Iwo Jima, or even the Marine Corps Museum.
There is really a lot around here but when you see it everyday it's easy to forget about.

History Sites that You Don't Think of as History:
Virginia's Great Falls Park-has ruins from ca. 1800 canal and town
W&OD bike path-located on 19th century railroad bed, plus there was a civil war action on it near Vienna.
Day Trip Sites Worth Doing:
Harpers Ferry WVA
Gettysburg
Ft. McHenry in Baltimore
St. Mary's settlement in St. Mary's MD (first settlement in MD)
Fredricksburg area battlefields
Monticello in Charlottesville
C&O Canal especially near Great Falls Maryland
There is a great deal more than that depending on areas of interest and children's ages.
