Growlers in Northern VA
Posted by: F. Lee Bailey ()

Help please! Where can I get growlers in NoVa?

I've purchased some at Port City in Alexandria

Rumor has it that Rock Bottom sells growlers.

Farmer's Cabinet (the old Shenendoah Brewery) may open soon.

What about:
- Capital City in Shirlington?
- Sweet Water Tavern?

BTW - Will they fill up growlers from other places?

Lost Rhino in Ashburn sells and fills growlers also.

Whole Foods in Fair Lakes fills growlers (not sure whether they sell them/not sure about other stores).

Sweetwaters Growlers ROCK! Get the Great American Pale Ale(Labeled GAR).

You need to purchase one growler first. Then it's just 8 bucks to get another one.

Just bring in the old one and walk over to the refrig to grab another.

Last I checked DogFish will not fill growlers. There is also Shennadaoh Brewing Company off Picket RD. Call ahead to find out what is ready for growlers.

The Whole Foods in Fair Lakes is THE place to go to get growlers filled. They have two taps in their oyster bar, two taps in their smokehouse, six to eight taps in their "Ham Burg" and all of them are $10 fills. They also have 6 taps in their cheese shop which are typically a little higher-end and the prices vary anywhere from $10 to $30.

I go there a couple of times a month and the selection is great - Port City, DC Brau, SIerra Nevada, Great Lakes, DuClaw, Founders, Duck Rabbit, Allagash, Dogfish Head, Goose Island, Alewerks, etc. The guy Lee who runs their beer department knows his shit.

Lee from Fair Lakes Whole Foods religiously maintains a page on fb listing all their draft beers and prices.

The only dogfish alehouse that will fill growlers is in the Greenbriar Shopping Center in chantilly!

This. Lee is a beer god. The selection of cans/bottles is NOT quite as broad as the Total in Greenbriar, but the taps . . . ah, the taps. Growler heaven.

Sweetwater is a definitive yes. I think they range from like 8 - 12 bucks. Cap city, I dont think they do but I could be wrong. The best night at Cap City is Thursdays, $2 draughts all day and night. Rock Bottom fills em, too.

Give me a break, just go get a case of beer like everyone else.

Growlers... You remind me of all of those douces that brew theer own beer. It's generally a group of geeks who also collect stamps adn play video games all day and they think brewing their own beer will make them cool. Well they are wrong, it makes you an ass.

Seriously, you need to seek out places to fill big bottles of beer? Come on man, get a life.

Well, it tastes better. It's fresher. Draft beer's better than canned/bottled beer. Beer I make myself is fresher than draft beer. Enjoy your Bud Light.

Shenandoah Brewery off Pickett St, not too far from Port City and cheaper growlers. You can also brew your own batch there, which is pretty unique.

Closed, dude. Last summer, I think; sold out to Farmer's Cabinet, who are supposed to be opening up a tasting room at some point. Right now, they're just making beer for their restaurant in Philadephia.

A case of beer consists of 288 oz of beer. A growler has 64. You are a walking contradiction and likely a raging fucking douchebag. If you think any beer that is sold by the case in a grocery store holds a candle to some of te fine craft nectar listed here, you dont know bud lite from butthole.

No need to be a douche. Some high quality draft beer is not a bad thing.

And before you knock brewing your own beer, you should try it. Even a douche nozzle such as yourself has the ability to make good beer at home - it's really not that complicated.

The growlers at Whole Foods are a great way to try beer that you might not typically find in bottles at your local grocery, especially some of the higher ABV varieties and being able to sample them before you buy is even better. I never would have tried barley wine if it was not for Lee.

I started to home brew about a year ago with a friend and it is a fun hobby, especially once we started putting into a keg instead of bottles. The first few batches were a bit of a learning process...drinkable, but not something that you would want to share with strangers. Now, however, we have people asking when they can get their own growler filled at Chez Madison and we are more than happy to oblige. Just finished the last of the kolsch and should be kegging a saison and a hefeweizen this weekend.

There's a place in Falls Church (forget the name) that fills growlers. It's right on Broad Street near the State Theater. They seel growlers of standard stuff like Bud, Coors Light, Amstel on tap and sometimes Yungling or MGD. It's a good deal, like 7.99.

EVERYONE who brews their own beer is a douce! It doesn't taste better - it's taste worse! Go to Total Wine and buy whatever beer you like and it will be 100% better than home brew or Growlers or whatever nerdy thing you think is cool.

You are losers. You may not know it but trust me, you are a loser if you brew our own or run around refilling Growlers. I promise you the bartenders snicker at you when filling your growler (I am a former bartender at SW). BTW, naming it a growler is a pure marketing term to make it sound cool. But it's not its a big bottle of draft beer that will go flat quickly.

Seriously, go to a bar order a beer (Be it a Bud Light or a trendy micro brew) and you"ll be far better off.

You never worked at Sweetwater, if you did you would know the bartenders do not fill the Growlers. BTW Sweetwater is the best place to get a Growler with the freshest, best tasting beer in NoVa.

What I do believe is you work for some beer distributor who wants us to buy whatever he can get his hands on to distribute. Thats OK I will bring my Growlers to Sweetwater and exchange them for filled ones with Pale Ale and Naked River

way bring back a four year old thread... but Norms in Vienna fills, Caboose iN Vienna fills, whole foods, Lost Rhino, Sweetwater, many places are filling growlers now...

great way to get some "oddball" beers that are not normally bottled.

I have not filled to many of my own growlers lately. I'm an alcoholic and have two 1/6 kegs on tap at my house. My neighbors come to me to get their growlers filled.

Mad Fox is like $17 for a growler - way out of line from other places, which usually around $10.

Hey growler fans,

Just got into this! I am trying mad beers now and am *hic* happy ;)

But what I am looking for is a nice LIGHT beer but with a full flavor (something like Corona without having to add the lime...but not as piss-watery as a bud light- somewhere in the middle) any suggestions?

I can't stand dark beers for some reason- maybe it was a bad batch of Guinness that day- but after that experience my stomach had, I said never again on the heavies! (oddly am the same with dark liquors, I can only stomach light...why IDK?)

Any suggestions?

try a wheat beer. not dark by any stretch, but usually a nice clean flavor, Statr with blue moon, but tell the bar tender to keep the fruit.

If you Like corona, then I'm surprised you don't like bud, coors, or natty light... Corona is just Mexico's version of Bud...

They add the lime to mask the skunkiness of the beer and to keep the flies away...

Hi all,
Just found a brewpub down here in Woodbridge
near Potomac Mills called Ornery Brewing.
http://www.ornerybeer.com/
They will fill any clean growler, no matter
what name is on it! They also sell their own
for $6. Most beers are $18, but
only $10 on Mondays! Tried a couple while
there, very good!
