scanner says it was an airsoft/pellet type of gun that was used and that two students were shot in "the rear end". police put up a perimeter in the neighborhood and fairfax 1 circled overhead. four youths were spotted in the rear of a home (on the deck?) near the school and questioned. it was determined they were allegedly* responsible for the shooting (the alleged* weapons were identified and confiscated at the house where the youths were found).

the perimeter was cleared.

i'd say there's going to be some ass-whooping in that house tonight, but from the looks of it, it's coming too late.

*putting in alleged because we live in a litigious society, but if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's more than likely a duck. :-|

BREAKING NEWS: A medic has been requested to RRMS (entrance 3); an officer is not feeling well.

On a call like that they prepare for everything. These could have had other weapons as far as they knew.

Yeah they could had a bomb and chemical weapons too. Maybe a RPG, and anti aircraft fire for the helicopter. They didn't prepare for everything!

Coming straight from the horses mouth so the speculation and rude judgements can stop:
it was a 2 teens who have never been in trouble before were shooting air soft into the woods from the deck. Behind the trees is a shed/bldg that is attached to the school that act as classrooms. They accidentally hit someone. Granted they shouldn't have been doing it unsupervised in the first place because that is the rule, it wasn't a malicious attach. This was poor judgment and an accident and are sad anyone got hurt superficial or not.

Hmmm. They hit not one, but two kids, minutes apart. They hit them hard enough to cause penetration and blood, requiring a trip to the hospital. Hit them both in the same general area of the body. Doesn't sound like an "oops" situation to me.

That is because the kids were in a group next to the bldg and there were 2 kids each with a soft air gun shooting at the woods and the kids were directly behind that. Funny the cops who investigated it and spoke with ME all 4 said they didn't think it was intentional either since they have shot at the woods before and used target and nothing like this ever happened. I guess those cops are wrong too and can get wool pulled over their eyes OR MAYBE they spoke to the kids and saw how bad they felt and got all the facts adn realized it was an ACCIDENT!

Two kids had to be taken to the hospital and there were numerous pellet holes in the side of the modular building which houses testing for pre-school kids. Even if I take the leap (and its a leap) that it was somehow an accident, people still need to be held accountable for being negligent. They were firing a weapon in the direction of an f'ing school and shot 2 kids. They deserve whatever they get.

I honestly typically believe in that, but what facts do we need here? They admitted to firing weapons that struck two students and a school building. I am not sure which facts would make that OK.

Glad it wasn't my child that was hit... those jackasses would have had the barrels shoved so far up their rears that they would be spitting the pellets at that point!!

What kind of a moron shoots into woods that are adjacent to a school, knowing full-well there are people out there?! It'd be different if school was out and it really was at a target. Couldn't they have played World of Warcraft for another half hour and let the kids finish their party?!

And where is the parental supervision? I get that parents work while kids are home, but at some point there should have been a conversation about using guns (even if they are airguns) while alone and especially toward a target that faces a school. Seriously, whose bright idea was that?!

They're lucky that they changed the law last year to exempt air rifles from what's considered within the definition of discharging a 'firearm;' otherwise, they might have been charged.

So let's break it down.

Were they Airsoft guns or BB guns?

BB's are made of metal which can inflict flesh trauma...or worse sometimes.

Airsoft = low velocity plastic balls, 1/4' diameter.
(Put an eye out? It could. Flesh trauma? Maybe, but it won't tear fabric most of the time.)

I've been shot with them plenty by my kids on Christmas...and I returned fire...with goggles of course mom.

What do we have? BB or Airsoft?

Big difference.

Back in the day, I killed critters with BB guns. They can be a lot more powerful you know.

So?

Not sure exactly what type of gun, but my son is friends with the boy who was shot and the projectile ripped through his shirt and the side of his torso. Enough of a wound where he had minor surgery to remove everything and clean it up. Pretty scary.

Charges should be coming out Monday. Expect each individual to be charged with 3-5 counts of the charges below. I find it very unlikely these kids will escape felony convictions.

Charges likely to be filed:
assault, misuse of a firearm, shooting into an occupied conveyance, aggravated battery, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, pointing a gun at a person, and the most severe aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The boys families will also both likely face civil tort cases. Both victims had minor surgery.

Then all four will be recommended for expulsion. I knew a kid who got expelled for carrying a bb gun to school. Firing at children, I don't think there's a way for them to get out of this one.

Charges Pending in Rocky Run Pellet Gun Incident
Two students were struck by pellet gun or BB gun after outdoor assembly on the last day of school; injuries not serious.

UPDATE: Police say they have apprehended four teenagers they believed were involved in the incident. The suspects are juveniles who do not attend the school. Police recovered a pellet gun believe used in the incident.

---

Charges are pending Friday against a group of juveniles who shot two students at Rocky Run Middle School with a pellet or BB gun.

The two students, a boy, 14, and a girl, 13, were struck on their way back into the school from an outdoor assembly Friday morning. The shots were fired from the woods next to the school.

The school went into “secure the building status” just before 10 a.m. Friday morning. The doors were then locked from the outside for under an hour and police secured a perimeter around the school.

After about half an hour, police apprehended a group of suspects. Though they were not able to immediately release information on the number of people involved in the incident, police do not believe that any in the group of juveniles attend the school.

Police spokesperson Lucy Caldwell said that both students who were hit were taken to INOVA Fair Oaks hospital. They were treated for their non-life-threatening injuries and released.

“Police do look at this very seriously because people were injured,” Caldwell said.

The incident occurred on the last day of school.

Well the parents did nothing illegal. I forsee no criminal charges against them, but this act will be extremely costly to them. Civil cases will likely happen where the parents will be sued for compensatory and punitive costs, then when the kids are expelled they either have to move or go private school which will be where the big financial burden falls.

For playing with a BB Gun, everyone i know shot a BB gun when they were a kid. And they all turned out fine. How about stop blaming the parents and start treating the kids like they did something wrong. They are old enough to figure that shit out for themselfs.

Not really the parents fault here; BUT I don't know anyone who fired BB Gun's into a school crowd during the day. Firing a BB Gun and firing one at kids during a school day is not a valid comparison.

Yes, You can be the best parent in the world and your kid is still going to do stupid shit, it's part of growing up. So your saying Parents should take all BB guns away from kids because they might shoot a someone with it. I think the reason they are legal and parents don't worry, because even if you DO shoot someone it ain't gonna do shit unless it's point blank in the eye, and if that was the case, then this would be a different story.

I really hope the proposed charges that are expected today do indeed come about. Justice here will be some form of punishment to both the delinquents and the parents. If everyone just gets off without any repercussions because it was "an accident" then the kids and parents fooled everyone. This was a SHOOTING and I really hope our community deals with it ...

At the very least I hope the parents of the injured children ensure a FULL investigation is conducted - guns of any sort in and around schools are serious business. If my child were injured I'd push the police, the principal, and my own lawyers to get to the bottom of it and to my satisfaction.

Bconcerned I'm right there with you! I guarantee if it were my kid that was hit, at the VERY least the culprits (or their families in this case) would be paying the hospital bills. A gun was fired and injury occurred, accident or not. If they let this one slide, how many more times will this type of thing happen because they didn't make an example of it from the jump?!

Still can't believe the mother claimed it was an accident according to the news. I have a friend who works in the modular building that was hit, she said that they counted about 35 holes in the side of the building. She also said that the principal sent an e-mail saying that both victims were fine, but that one required invasive surgery because the projectile was 3 inches into his abdomen. Sounds like a heck of a pellet gun!

the kids who were hit were fine to come to the dance that night, so how bad could it have been? this is just another huge over reaction to a small incident and the usual underreaction to larger incidents. Stupid FCPS

I don't know about the girl, but I know for a fact that the boy wasn't at the dance. He was busy recovering from abdominal surgery to remove a pellet lodged near his small intestine. But you 're right, overreaction. Getting shot and being hospitalized is part of the normal school experience. Moron.

Gotta hand it to FCPS...they sure know how to gp out with a bang, don't they?

Let's see....

we had this shooting....

the swim coach who was sleeping with 15 year olds....

the SOCO football coach and Mountain View teacher dealing in steroids....

and.....best for last....

the poplar tree teacher busted for child porn posession...

Seriously...all in one day....

Damn good thing they employ like 25 people over in their communications department.

Well, I haven't seen any additional news reports here. Has anyone heard if charges were filed? Has there been any response in the news or the parents?

Generally I don't think this is an over-reaction at all ... I would expect police to show up when kids get shot at school (accidentally or not) and I would expect people of the community to want to get the facts and see the final conclusions.

I'll keep bumping this one up until we hear what happens (and will also ignore the truly ignorant and sad posts by the 15 year old kids who litter this site).

I actually live on that strip right behind rocky run, and we have had problems with kids shooting other kids with pellet guns, this is NOT the first incident! My neighbor, a kid who is about 10 years old, walked across the basketball court with his friend and was shot at by these kids for no reason. They were literaly aiming at him, and the poor kids got hit in the hand and started bleeding. He ran back and his parents were really mad, and called the cops. The cops came and went door to door to the houses, and my neighbors did know who shot the kids, but the cops couldn't do anything, the kids denied shooting anyone. The victim's parents thought they actually tried to aim for his head.

Those freaking kids were probably the same ones who put glass bottles in front of my car's tires as well, and many other cars. They vandalized and are a threat to my neighborhood. There's no doubt that they fired at those kids for fun and have no remorse or logic. I am glad that these kids are charged, and random people won't get shot at anymore or glass bottles put in front of my tires.

SWEET JUSTICE!!!!!!!!!!

Listen up all you people. My son and his friend we're just playing when they accidentally shot those kids with pellet guns, and when they shot up that school trailer/classroom, and when they put those bottles under your car tires. Are you going to tell me that you never had and juvenile delinquent fun when you were 16? The "victims" weren't even hurt that seriously. Well, if it makes you feel any better he is now in big trouble and the horrible judge at Fairfax is making him stay there which means he will not be sleeping at home on his pillow top mattress, playing Xbox Live until 4am and driving my Range Rover to Buffalo Wing Factory for a long, long time. And now his dad won't let him keep his Marlin 30-30 that he got from Santa in his room anymore. I hope you're happy!
