Trooper Pulls Injured Man from Burning Police Car

A Virginia state trooper pulled a man from his burning police cruiser after it was hit from behind early yesterday on westbound Interstate 66 in Centreville.

Trooper J.T. Mahalik had pulled over the driver of a pickup on a tinted windows violation. As he was interviewing the man in his marked cruiser with lights flashing, the patrol car was hit by a Saab driven by David J. Stout, 34, of Centreville, police said.

The collision caused the cruiser to catch fire, and Mahalik, who was injured in the crash, dragged the unconscious pickup driver out of the cruiser before it was engulfed in flames. Both were taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Mahalik is in stable condition. The condition of the pickup driver was not available.

Stout, who was not injured, was charged with driving under the influence.

The tinted windows violator gave the Trooper a fake name and escaped from the Hospital. VA police are looking for him - http://www.wusa9.com/video/player.aspx?aid=59496&sid=71214&bw=hi&cat=74&provider=topVideo

No doubt the cop is a hero for pulling the guy out, I was referring to the irony of the fact that over tinting endangers them, and then they pull someone over for it, and nearly get killed.

Odds are 66 was backed up meaning no speeders, so he was just arbitrarily looking for other excuses to gain some more revenue for the state.

think about this, if he wasnt pulled over, he wouldnt be in a flaming police cruiser. btw, why was he in the cop car anyways?

I say the cop is actually not a hero, that he put the guy in the passenger seat, and therefore he had an obligation to save him... a hero does not do things because they are obligated, they do them because they are right.

I've lived in several regions of this country and Northern Virginia was the first time I ever saw a cop shooting a radar at gridlocked traffic.

The news said the driver had lied about his identity, so the trooper had him come back to his cruiser to question him further. The driver lied about his identity at the hospital, and has since disappeared. Didn't take the time to thank the trooper for saving his life.

The drunk driver that fell asleep and ran into the cruiser was not injured.

Trooper Mahalik suffered a broken neck, a broken rib and burns to his legs, but was still able to pull “Chad E. Roger-Steven” out of the burning vehicle…who was in the cruiser for questioning regarding his true identity.

Sure, the Trooper has an obligation to protect life, but, under the circumstances, I’d call his actions heroic.

The cop was a hero.

Also, this is an example of why when you have a fender bender on I-66 or I-95, you don't stand in the middle of the f-ing Interstate and exchange information. That's what the shoulder is for (though you can still get killed). I see knuckleheads in this area do that all of the time. They are complete morons.

The cop was definitely a hero, obligated or not.

However window tint laws, like front plate laws, are a joke. Nothing more but something else to make the county/state money. If you're going to have them, they should be secondary infractions that are only applied after pulling someone over for something more serious, like speeding.

In an area with real crime, the police have more important things to worry about than pulling people over stuck in traffic for BS infractions.

window tint laws should NEVER be a secondary infraction.

they are a serious officer safety issue. i understand it is a pain in the butt, however there are many unsavory characters out there that attempt to hurt police officers.

when an officer stops a vehicle anything can happen. the officer being able to see inside the vehicle can be the difference between life and death.

window tint is a very serious issues. just becuase you do not have something to hide, and you would not hurt a cop doesnt mean someone else wont.

should your car look 'cool' at the risk of officers lives?

That is complete B.S. Using that logic, the law protects officers from unsavory characters only if they're in the front seat. But you can drive around in a 4-door pick-up LEGALLY with limo tint on the rear windows. The cop won't be able to see that guy sitting in the back seat with a sawed-off shotgun.

PLus, I guess police in Maryland are shaking in their boots because you can have 35% tint (a reasonable limit) on front windows there.

Exactly. 35% is reasonable IMO, yet every state has different percentages written into their laws. So who determines what is too dark to see into? Why don't we outlaw blinds for our windows, hell, when an officer responds to a domestic disturbance at a house he/she should be able to know if someone is inside with a gun, waiting to blast them when they walk in the door. This isn't about making my car look "cool", it's about privacy. Privacy that shouldn't be compromised due to the actions of ones who want to break the law.

Front plate laws are also a joke. You have some states which do not require them, and some that do. People argue that having a front plate will allow the officer to see better if the car is stolen or is being driven by someone with a warrant out for them. The basis behind it is a catch-22.

"Well, you didn't steal this car or are a convicted felon, but if you WERE, I wouldn't be able to notice that from the front, and that's why I'm pulling you over".

Firefighters save lives and do good 100% of the time, while a good percentage of Fairfax cops serve only to harass and nit pick taxpayers for b.s. reasons. DWI's and crimes of violence (etc.) deserve 100% of their devotion, rather than wasting valuable time fucking w/ people who have something hanging from the rear view mirror.

I swear, every time I see a Virginia State Trooper standing on the shoulder of 66 westbound where it merges from 4 to 2 lanes, just checking everyone's front plates and stickers, etc, I want to drive by and blow out the tires to his car.

Here we have a guy regularly assigned to take full advantage of a traffic jam to find things to raise the state more money. Everyone is just going 5mph on their way home from work, minding their own business. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else.

That trooper is my cousin is he a hero yes and not because he's my family. He's a hero because, injured, he put his life in danger to save another. It does not matter how little the charge was that the man was being pulled over for. He obviously has something to hide or would not have given a false name at the hospital and left in such a hurry. You complain about police pulling people over and say it's just a way to gain revenue for the state, but I guarantee next time you're in trouble or something bad happens you you'll be needed that law on your side. Look passed your own ignorance and see the big picture.

Blah, blah, blah. I think that's the point of several previous posters. If the cops actually spent more of their time helping/protecting people in need/danger, etc, that would be great. But how many of them spend most of their day, and our money, doing like the state guy on 66 mentioned above?

Firefighters are heroes, while most cops are assholes...except for your cousin and a few other good cops. If you can honestly sit there and say there is no corruption, no "blue wall of silence", you are the one who is ignorant. I think some guy a long time ago said "absoulute power corrupts absolutely". Cops have power and are succeptable to everything from power trips to corruption.

Yeah, you're right....any police agency that is enforcing minor traffic/vehicle laws is strictly a "revenue raiser", right?

Okay then, I propose the abolition of monetary penalties.

No front tag? No problemo, won't cost you a dime! Just a mandatory 24 hours of evading Bubba's HUGE shaft at ADC....DO NOT drop that bar of soap in the shower!

Too much tint? No problemo, won't cost you a dime! Just a mandatory 36 hours of evading Bubba's HUGE shaft at ADC....just DO NOT drop that bar of soap!!!

How about we just abolish bullshit laws?

Nobody has yet to justify to me why one state has a legal limit of 35% and one 75%. How one state allows as dark as you WANT on the rear windows/windshield and one state only allows 50%. The "protection for the officer" is moot if the laws are determined on the flip of a coin by state politicians.

FYI, I've never been given a ticket for illegal tint or no front plate. My father is a retired cop and I've grown up knowing cops all my life, and guess what, the ones who work in REAL cities with REAL problems think the laws are a joke and are shit they shouldn't be worrying about.

Stop living in your fantasy world and accept that not every law is there to protect you from a knife-wielding maniac. Some are there to help sustain budgets.

It was the cop's responsibility to protect a person in his custody BUT given the circumstances he would have been excused from doing so due to his injuries. So, yes he's a stand-up guy for doing what he did at that moment. As for the rest, tinted windows? Come on now. Too many stupid laws everywhere. This poor tool doesn't make these dumb laws though. As far as thanking the cop goes, give the guy a break; it's not like he was exactly having a great day either.

I talked with the guy who was stopped (pickup trunk, scroll up if you do not remember!) tonight, and he is doing fine. His knees are still a bit fucked, but that is the way it goes! He was completely knocked out in the accident, and he does not remember the impact or rescue by the trooper.

The law suit(s) from this may be very entertaining.

Window Tint? why is that a reason to stop someone anyway????

Yesterday, my friends and I broke down in the fast lane of 66 headed towards Nissan concert. We managed to pull over on shoulder but, the huge storm was just starting to hit. We were really scared even though we were laughing.

The rain and lightning got so bad, other drivers had trouble and we thought we could get hit.

So when a Police car….(I think a State Police Car) came up behind and put his lights on…we felt safe….so, even though we are always talking about how we don’t like the cops because of tickets and stuff, we all were really happy he was protecting us from getting hit. He stayed with us until our parents got us…..and, we ended up with a better car,LOL, and went to the concert!

He "chooses to enforce them?" Do you actually read the garbage you post on here? He doesn't "choose" to enforce them anymore than you "choose" to stuff tacos the way your manager at the Taco Bell instructed you to to do on your first day. He has been sworn by the State of Virginia to enforce it's laws, that's what he gets paid to do. Why enforce tint violations? Do you have any idea how many cops get attacked/shot by motorists hiding behind tinted windows in this country? That's why the law is there. Learn something about the job you seem to casually dismiss as if it's an afterthought. Better yet put your real name and address on here tough guy so we can forward it to your local precinct so the cops that work there can make sure not to show up to your house when someone is breaking in and about to slaughter you. You know, since they "choose" to enforce what laws they want to.

Dear "Gravis is a Moron"

Yes police are endowed with brains and free to use them. And yes, Gravis is pretty silly sometimes, but a moron? That's pretty harsh even for a troll.

Why does everyone blame the police for bull shit laws? There job is to enforce them... How about you start blaming the politicians, the true assholes that were voted into office. They legislated the laws that the cops are forced to enforce. Stop pissing on cops for doing their job and take your anger out on the true shit birds, the politicians!

There has been times in each and every one of our lives where a cop couldve let somethin small slide but instead they have to be a dick and write you up

Better yet, come up with an original thought, rather than something you heard on a rap album while you were playing grand theft auto and stuffing cheetos in your face. Hopefully you break your neck "legend" so there is one less dickwad walking the streets.

get it right, jackass, you dont play grand theft auto because it's not a game, it's a murder simulator to train kids to kill. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Thompson_(attorney)#Video_games_and_juveniles

Yeah yeah that guy is a hero for saving the guy. But if the dumbass had something better to do he wouldn't have to get caught in that situation. He should have been worrying about that drunk driver maybe he could have caught him before his ass got hit. Cops always worry about bullshit issues when there is real crime going on. Front license plate laws and tint laws are bs. And cops always have backup show up whenever you get pulled over. What kind of shit is that? So my tax money is being wasted with another set of dumbasses just sitting around when they could be solving a real crime. Did you know if you have a high I.Q. you can't become a cop? I feel real safe with that kind of police force protecting me. THeir just tools following their masters orders.
