Hybla Valley Elementary is just a big free breakfast and lunch facility anyway. Seen its statistics and demographics on the FCPS site? What could they lose anyway?

Hybla Valley was the bees knees in the 1970s. My 1st grade teacher (approx 1976) was a hot blonde who drove a '72 Stingray and rode a Harley. I can only imagine what a complete shithole that school must be now. Lord knows the old neighborhood was headed downhill 20yrs ago.

Had to be Ms. Young. Loved being at Hybla from 70 - 76. Great principal, Mrs. Quander, and a whole bunch of awesome teachers. Ms. Burden, Miss Healy, and especially Mr. Jeffreys. He was still checking on me when I ran into him after high school. I didn't know what I was going to do then, but I would love to have been able to tell him that I became a sixth grade teacher, too.
I hope good things are to come for the kids there now, and in time, I bet they will. Despite what you read on this site, teachers still care about kids, and the whole nonsense about the drama between the new school board and Gatehouse is just background noise. Good teachers still bust their butts every day, don't care all that much about the money, and go home with smiles on their faces because of something funny, cute, or poignant that a kid said or did.

I had Ms. Young too in 1966. I think it was her first or second year teaching. Today Hybla Valley serves a very diverse low income community. This is probably a case where test scores may not reflect how hard the teachers are working to get the kids to care about their education and future. Sometimes helping a student get a D is a major accomplishment from where they would other wise be. I imagine they can always hire different teachers but I doubt any of them would stick around if they are solely evaluated on test scores. Why would anyone put their job on the line by taking on the tougher schools or classes?

Hybla Valley is just extended daycare for wetbacks. No learning takes place there. Just keeping the little bastards off the streets until they're old enough to loiter for illegal jobs outside of a 7-11.

Bingo! It was Ms. Young. She was a great 1st grade teacher, as I recall.

Rt1Bred and others, I am writing a history on the RT 1 area, would be interested in any memories of the area, in particular, some of the old motels, etc that used to line Rt 1...Wagon Wheel, Pines, McCreary, etc...

Thanks
