The Villagio will be a great addition to Clifton, A nice family food establishment offering Italian food. One of the partners has owned several successful restaurants and the other has great vision. The Villagio will be anything but overpriced and pretentious but it will be done the right way, thank God. And,they will be offering delivery service which is needed in this area.

As opposed to what the previous owners would have offered...

...Still, if the Weston's guy found someone dumb enough to buy him out or take over that lease, he is one lucky SOB. Given the quick handover, I'm assuming the guy didn't go bankrupt over this.

It appears they cleared room to increase seating capacity. Not sure what the original configuration allowed for was but i'm sure it was small relative to other restaurants here. good idea IMO.

Building has no where to go but up. Its been in need of a full rehab for at least 20 years

New landscaping will replace what was there and the fence is not yet completed so give it time. As for the delay, anyone who haas gone through the permit process in this county fully understands how many hoops you are made to jump through before given the ok.

Wait, the permit process took an extra three months so they are delaying opening by eight months? They originally advertised opening October, 2012 so June, 2013 (earliest part of summer) would be an eight month delay.

The Oct. date was targeted when the property was first leased as being open for Clifton Day would have been nice. That was quickly changed to Jan/Feb once the process began and after the permit delay taking so long, Juneish sounds about right.

Standard food establishments (the others are limited food establishments) are visited 3 times per year by the Health Department. It is the norm for Inspectors to find numerous "violations" during each visit. Most are corrected during the visit which is minor and if an Inspector does not find at least several violations, they are viewed by their Supervisors as not doing their job. If there were any real danger to the general public, the food establishmeent would be shut down.

It's really to bad. Shame on Clifton. They go all out to save a school. That was terrible the school was closed. And now the an old historic building is now a green pizza eye sore. What a shame

Problem with Clifton restaurants is that they are hard to get too even for those people who live relatively close by. All those windy roads for 20 minutes... sometimes it easier to go to Fairfax.

Someone needs to open a nice restaurant on 123 near Burke lake park. Large population in the area, higher end incomes and zero decent restaurants within 30 minutes.

Who owns the building? Maybe it's the permits holding it up. The building has been in horrible condition for years now. Take a walk inside from the wine shop. It's like walking in a fun house. The floors are crazy. Just go upstairs to use the bathrooms. I'm surprised it's still standing. They put the banners up and the cars with every event in Clifton. The general store is all they need and the ice cream place.

Fact is the place is a dump. It needs major work. I just hope Fairfax County is keeping a sharp eye on the work. The permit posted is for second floor seating. It's really a shame the building was allowed to go so downhill. Why would the town allow it. The building is old and should have been kept in original condition. Now it's just a chopped up crazy mess. The parking is terrible. I feel sorry for the homes close to it. What is wrong with the owner?

Enjoying an evening stroll and Peterson's ice cream cone with my husband last night in Clifton, I ran into a very polite young man picking up trash in the grassy area alongside the new restaurant that is currently under construction. (old Heart in Hand location) Come to find out, this man who lives in the small village town with his wife and two small children, was the executive owner of the new restaurant, VILLAGIO, that is being built. In speaking to him, I have a feeling this place is going to be a very unique spot and a fantastic addition to Fairfax County. The restaurant will have an extensive wine list, charcuterie, fresh home made pasta, al fresco dining in a village setting, private dining and a gourmet market complete with brick oven pizza. I wasn't surprised to hear about all the challenges he had encountered over the past year, dealing with such an old building. I for one am excited and looking forward to this new venue and wish he and his family all the best.

Who cares about the gossip in Clifton. Problem is the town has lost control of the old red building on Main street. The shame is how this will effect the homes around it. The building looks insane with the wall on the back of it. That being said, I'm sure he had permits to do what he did. I think people of the town just have to accept the new owner of business is large and in charge. It's a shame but a simple truth people will have to live it. After all I heard he really has helped the town.

The building is private property, so since when did the town have "control" of it to lose? It's historic (over 100 years old) and has been preserved pretty well considering its age. The exterior is not being changed, from what I can see, except for the new patio enclosure in the back and probably fresh paint. I'm sure the food will be fine and I for one am looking forward to seeing the new restaurant open. As to neighboring residents, there has been a restaurant in the building since the early eighties, so they are probably used to it by now.

Why would anyone care about what goes on in the building. The guy is large and in charge. So deal with it. His money will help Clifton. He only wants the best for the town. He is the man.

Vallagio is a much needed place to eat in this town, the current options are quite limited. I'm not going to bash the pub or Trummers but...another option would be great. There is only one owner and his wife, they are kind people and have integrity and good morals. The partner of the other restaurants mentioned here is not at all involved. The fact that they put a ton of money into a historic restaurant renovation project that needed serious TLC is admirable in itself. Most would not take this on... It clearly is a gamble in some ways. We are so happy that it is somewhere that will: Deliver, is Clean, and Done right. Why does anyone question where the money came from, so stupid. The added touches and expanded outdoor seating to the place show the owner cares about his patrons and is a smart business man-that typically works well for customers. The place is absolutely lovely, just because that is the case it doesn't mean it's pretentious. We all have eaten at nice restaurants where big investments have been made and they are not necessarily pretentious and are NOT over priced. why is that assumption being made here?
This is a blessing especially because structural engineers have said the building MUST be renovated and the owner has never put a penny into it. When someone spends that kind of money on a project he clearly has gone from Vision to Dream to Reality... He will not go cheap on service or food choices and that is obvious. Quality is what we need, and we have all heard that from so many cliftonites, now that it is here, we are hating?! OK- so the parking situation will totally suck but it already sucks and always has... What is the difference now? The old Heart and Hand attracted many customers in its day before it was run into the ground. Why can't we just be excited and happy and wish the new owners well and enjoy that we have a little treasure in our back yard? I can't wait to go eat there opening day next week!! Stop hating haters. GO VALLAGIO!

Nice post. But you say the owner of the building never put a penny into it. How could you possibly know that? I have talked to the owner, who tells me he has spent many tens of thousands on repairs and upkeep and gave substantial tenant concessions in exchange for their improvements. And if the building was so bad, how come it's almost always been fully leased? Let's just enjoy the new restaurant, which will do so much for Clifton, and stop sniping at everybody involved.

It's supposed to be an Italian restaurant the "exec. chef" is middle eastern and the parking is gonna piss off the other businesses and residents. I give them two weeks before the people from the pub fire shots across the street and war breaks out. It has been said that in the Clifton area we have our own version of Manassas. It is called Little Rocky Run. I think I speak for most Clifton area folks when I say that, as long as you respect the town, you are most welcome irregardless of the area that you reside.

I am looking forward to Villagio opening and have been for over a year. In the mean time I would like to recommend one of my local favorites. ABSOLUTE BBQ which is basically located down Compton RD, left turn on Ordway RD. The owners,
Ben and Martha, used to live in the town of Clifton and are originally from the deep south. Ben has something like 40 years of BBQ experience. Almost all the sides and sauces are made from scratch. Nothing pretentious about this place, it is the real deal. For what you may pay for a drink at Trummer's, you can get a whole delicious southern cooked meal.

He's talking about the place across the street - the Main Street Pub, associated with the Clifton General Store, not Villagio.

Everyone, including the owner, dislike the signs but it was a requirement by the Town of Clifton Planning Commission as part of the parking approval. If enough people express their dislike of the signs to the members of the Town Council, the problem of the excessive signage could be corrected.

Sorry to threadjack...

ABSOLUTE BBQ is pretty good, when it was open. Stopped by there recently and the parking lot was closed off with a gate and signs stating it was under renovation were posted. Called the phone number on the website and it was disconnected. Emailed the address on the website and received no response. I hope they're going to re-open and be open more than 3 days per week.

Nothing resembling reality was posted? What? Exactly what do you take exception with? (You weren't there for the discussion we had so I suggest you ask him yourself for the truth). You don't believe that everyone dislikes the signs? Not anyone I've spoken with and I doubt (but could be wrong!) that there is someone out there who really likes the signs. You don't believe that residents contacting the TC with their opinions wouldn't lead to a discussion and possible change of the signage requirements imposed? Of course it COULD be changed.

The market and pizza counter were opened last night so I ordered a couple of pies to check it out. They were slammed, of course, so it was on the chaotic side and wait times were pretty long, but the pizza was tasty. They really did an unbelievable job renovating the place and it's obvious they spent a ton of money. We took a quick tour of the restaurant and garden and it looks nothing like it used to. Sounds like it will be a couple of more weeks until the main restaurant opens but I look forward to giving it a try.

My first experience at the Little Villagio take out was not a positive one. We had an issue with the pizza when I returned home and called immeadiately. The manager, Joe, offered to make us two more. When I drove back to Villagio, I had the same result.

Joe seemed to listen, but not "hear" what I was saying. He said, "come back tomorrow and we will get it right". Why tomorrow to get it right?

I admit, I have very high expectations for this place because I hear the owner is a "perfectionist" and "does things right", as well as "spares no expense". I really hope this place succeeds!

The 12" pizza is actually 9" and the 16" turned out to be 12". I hope they get that issue corrected as well.

Clifton 1, I think we are on the same page. I feel that the owners did a fantastic job with the renovations and having a good Italian place in town will be a great asset. I too have been anxiously awaiting the opening. If the food is good I will be dining there/carrying out dozens of times throughout the year.

Unfortunately, my first experience was very similar to yours. My very simple order was delivered incorrectly and the quality and taste of the pizzas was marginal at best. I expect to pay a premium price at Villagio but I also expect the quality of the product to match. It most certainly did not. I am sure this will improve with experience.

Unfortunately with hungry kids to feed returning the pizzas, and the associated wait-time with doing that, was not an option.

My question for the Villagio management is this: Are you willing to make any accommodations for those of us that purchased dis-satisfactory pizzas over the course of the first few days of opening?
