What are some good places to fish in NOVA and the DMV?
Posted by: Fishing123 ()
Date: May 23, 2012 12:23AM

I am planning to go fishing soon, and I was wondering if there were any good areas to fish in Northern Virginia, as well as in DC and Maryland along the potomac. I know of places like riverbend park and lake fairfax and those places are alright, but I was looking for better places that have some good fishing spots.

Also which side of the potomac has better fishing spots the Virginia side or the Maryland side?

Thanks!

From shore or in a boat? What are you fishing for?

Either side of the Potomac has plenty of good places to fish. Depends what you're fishing for, what time of year, how the tide is running, etc., etc. A lot of it you can't really get to very well without a boat though.

It's a big river. Everything from Riverbend, the ponds on the MD side at Great Falls, Cabin John/Fletchers, Kennedy Center seawall, Roosevelt Island, Washington Channel, Pentagon Marina, 4 Mile Run, Air Force base wall and docks, old Pepco plant, Blue Plains, the spoils north MD side of the bridge, islands around Belle Haven, a few places off of the Parkway where creeks dump in on the VA side, and on down the river...

Note that you need a DC license from the Wilson Bridge up-river to Little Falls. No reciprocal license with VA or MD for that section of the river. Below the bridge you have VA/MD reciprocal licensing.

not really.
this is the land of the water bottle fishing line/ 17yo suburban "rednecks"... *cringe*
if you don't see mexicans or highschool kids flaunting skoal tins, chances are its a dry spot.
when you pull up to a suspected fishing spot, look for a '94 toyota tercel, or a 2010 trv tacoma.
if you run across either, chances are good that you've found a spot where people fish.

plenty of places not far outside of the county.. figure out if your dick reaches your asshole.

because you can fuck yourself if you expect me to give up my spots.

What kind of fish do you catch at little falls?

Only fags refer to the DC/Maryland/Virginia area as the "DMV".

+1, nothing says, "I got here 5 minutes ago..." than using DMV to denote DC/MD/VA. I can't speak for Washingtonians or Marylanders but Northern Virginians are proud to be where it is that we come from as John Cougar might say. So, we got out of our way to delineate ourselves from MD and DC.

In VA when you use DMV, people think you are referring to the Dept of Motor Vehicles.

I was never that good a fisherman but one of my friends was and he used to loan me some extra gear he had to go fishing at some local spots. This was back in the 90's so I don't know how much has changed since then but one of our favorite spots because it was good and easy to get to was Turkey Run park off the GW parkway.

We would just walk down the trail and wade into the river to fish for smallmouth bass and when the conditions were good (river & current not to high & strong) we had some great days there. Anyone fish there recently? If so, how was it?

Google and Bing Maps are your friend.
Plenty of fishing to be had in Fairfax. You just have to do a little research.
I fished a place in Reston of all places today that I have never been to. Caught 5 LM and countless sunfish on the fly.

Shhhhhhh... lol

It is a pretty good place at times if you can catch it when the water level is right and the fish are there. Kind of need to be willing to hike and get wet though. Don't try it if the water is up and moving. Thought that I was going to watch a guy drown there one day. Probably would have had he not just gotten lucky. A little water can be a lot stronger than it looks.

dear gangbangler,

that was the most incompetent and arrogant thing i think i have ever heard. i mean seriously, anyone who comes to this site ever again and reads that will be eternally stupider because your pathetic afterbirth self decided to squirm out of your mother's womb and pollute this world for what, about 30 years now, spewing hate and reeking of insecurity. You're probably some up-and-coming professional who hates his job and for that, i am genuinely sorry. maybe your parents didn't love you or maybe your girlfriend recently opened her eyes and left you. but being a prick doesn't justify your inferiority complex that causes you to take out your anger on some guy who's just trying to have a little fun on the river. I'd be willing to bet that any of the people you "cringe" at are happier people. Also, as an 18 year old who likes to fish, I do not consider myself a redneck nor do i carry Kodiak (only a pussy dips skoal) can down to the river for me. fishing is a fun relaxing activity and sharing your spots in no way will affect your own personal satisfaction.

to answer your question Fishing123, there are several good spots that i've discovered. Gravelly Point by Reagan Nat'l is a fun one to go to, but if you're more serious, there is the Potomac Overlook Park off of Lorcolm Lane in Arlington. Close to there is also two places on Military Road i like. One is the Gulf Branch gullet where it meets the Potomac. The other is underneath the Chain Bridge. its usually rather crowded but its a decent hole. All these are off the Potomac Heritage Trail, which is worth looking up to find your own fishing grounds.

Burke Lake is a beautiful area but i haven't had a ton of luck there. There are some other lakes a little farther out that are rumored to have good fish but i can't tell you from personal experience.

Best of Luck!

Last stocking that I see was for muskie, walleye, and channel cats in 2009 but the info may not have been updated. They don't really need to restock for bass and sunfish. It's self-supporting as far as they go.

Tons of fish and good size average from shocking surveys but it's a tough place to fish. We used to do OK there but we had to really work to do it. Don't even bother on the weekends. The fishing pretty much just shuts down other than just messing around with bluegill and an off fish here and there.

Leesylvania state park, just south of the marina, there is a railroad bridge across a small inlet. Submerged pilons on the west side of the bridge have produced hundreds of 1.5 - 5 pound largemouth. If you dont have a boat, Id head up to the Shenandoah and fish either of the 'low-water bridges'

Awesome! THanks for the tips on good locations. I'll have to check them out. Also thanks GANGBANGLER PLEASE READ, I appreciate the response to gangbangler lol. Also WilliamRObert and OriginalNOVA, DMV is used quite often to describe DC, MD, and VA so I doubt "fags" are the only ones who use it. OriginalNOVA i have been living in northern virginia for all my life. My family and I have been living here for many generations so no way did i get here "5 minutes ago...". This was meant to be a fishing thread, so why you even had to come on here and spread bullshit around is completely idiotic and unecessary.

Anyway thanks again everyone else who actually posted about fishing. That is all that I wanted from this thread. Feel free to keep posting other spots. Its always good to help out fellow fishermen.

This thread has information about 2, yes TWO world records caught in Fairfax County in the bast weeks. While both unverified by the VDGIF, still quite impressive. Or as a bass fisherman, devastating.

Ill be out all day Saturday. Blow the horn at JBass if you see him out there! Ill be the one with the big fish at the end of my line!

The best place to get a sure hit is Safeway. Giant is my second choice. No size limit and it is much cheaper then a license, Truck Fuel, Boat fuel, supplies and a few cases of beer.

I thought he was funny cause its somewhat true. His last line was a little much but whatever. And don't use the word "stupider" to say he's stupid because you have just acknowledged your own lack of grammatical intellect.

I've been yak fishing all of NoVa and RoVa (Rest of VA) and some days are better then others. My secret is this - I go where no one else does.

I have tried fishing in the DMV but most of the women there seem to be underage girls getting their license, and are accompanied by a parent. The female employees are all surly black women with a chip on their shoulder and the goal of turning away as many customers as possible. I will keep trying however and will report back if I ever land anything from the DMV waiting room.

Gulf Branch does provide a nice walk as you meander thru the park but it ends 150 feet above the river. No way to fish unless you plan to double up your reel and cast 200 feet. Strange that the poster didn't mention this b/c it was a bummer for my son and I to get excited about the option, park the car, walk towards the Potomac only to turn around and head back to find another option. Curious how the poster got anywhere near the river unless he walked down along the Potomac from Chain Bridge.

Keep driving if you see buicks and 1970's cadillacs-that signals old blacks fishing for carp! They don't drive the newer cadillacs bc their glove boxes were too small to hold a watermelon!

Yeah, I just ignore those maggots and skip right over them like they don't even exist.
Because, in the end, they really don't matter, do they?
I've recommended some of them to proctologists in the past for cranial abstractions.
