Waaaaaay back in the day, there used to be an arcade in Vienna in the Magruder's shopping center. If you're facing Magruder's, it was in that same structure, all the way to the left end. My grandfather used to take me up there to play Space Invaders, Pac Man and all of that. It didn't last long.

It was called Circus Circus until the casino in Vegas with the same name learned about it.

Go to John's Place at 11104 Lee Hwy in Fairfax, VA. A dozen plus classic pinball machines and pool tables. A true dive bar.

there was another one in Fairfax off of Main bottom of the hill near Judicial. I think was run by them too! Anybody remember that one? It's a bail/bond place now, used to be and eyeglass place - was originally built as a Highs Dairy store

I'll never forget Nina Williams ending my first Tekken 2 game by kicking me (well Lei Wulong LoLz) in the nuts! GAME OVER!

edit: there was an AWESOME hole-in-the-wall arcade in the shopping center that Alexandria's Big Bite is in off of Van Dorn near that Country/Punk bar I cant remember the name off.............

There was a quicky-mart/diner on Church Road in Sterling called Village Diner (we called it "VD"). They had a back room with pool tables and arcades. All the loser high school kids would hang out and smoke back there. This was in the 90s, at the tail end of the arcade era so it was already almost vintage.

I wasted many an allowance at a lot of the arcades mentioned (tilt, gametime, etc)...guys were mad a girl could kick their ass at street fighter II (go Ryu!)

Besides dave and busters, are there any vintage arcades left for adults??? Chuck e cheese games are a joke. I have a jar of quarters and a day off today....

I mean I know theres Xbox live get whatever game i want off the wii, etc but I miss standing at the machine smashing buttons and having people watching, it made it more intense. That and driving games- nothing like a good need for speed in the arcade not even having a drivers license yet beating grown men back in the day!!! LOL

The one at van down I think it was called Gametime or Funtime. It was next to that Charlie chiang restaurant and Jerry's subs. There used to be a Marathon video store there too.

Hah! Too funny! Someone just posted on another thread about Spartan Restaurant using the handle Pepperoni Stick. Despite being an Italian place owned by Greeks, they featured a lot of Asia-centric games. Kung-Fu Master, Yie-Ar Kung Fu, and Karate Champ were some that I recall...

Aladdin's Castle (I think that was the name) in Manasshole Mall was another. Flip Dizzy's on 28 was better and kind of shady looking. Friend of mine has an arcarde in his house that has Crystal Castles, Start Wars/Empire Strikes Back, Robotron 2084/Frogger, and a couple others.

One of them is the D&D like game that can have up to 4 players. I don't remember the name. He had the first version, then sold it to get the newer 2.5D version. He also has a MAME system and has a shit ton of games on it.

That arcade at Ballston Common was also a TILT, and believe it or not, its still there.....sort of.
They moved it from the food court to the top level of the mall, right next to Hecht's (now Macy's) years ago, and last year they moved to a much bigger space two stores up (away from Macy's).
It certainly doesn't have the charm it had back in the day, but these days we're lucky it is still there at all.

There was a two or three year period where arcades were the place to be. You would hear about some guy who supposedly just beat the world Defender record or someone who played Pac-Man for 36 hours straight or some nonsense like that. The really funny thing was that they were so popular, you could actually pick up girls at them the first year or so they hit big.

I remember going to People's Drug in Annandale with $5 in lawn mowing money, cashing that in, and playing Astro Blaster for hours. That was subsequently replaced by a Star Wars game. The 7-11 behind it, in the Heritage shopping center, was home to a number of low lifes.

Remember how folks used to stack their quarters up in the lower right corner of the screen?

The original Time Out in Springfield Mall was a true den of scumbaggery. I miss it!

@Pinball Gizzard

Finally someone in this thread got the name right. The arcade in Falls Church was Playtime, not Gametime. I used to hang out there all the time and even dated a couple of girls I met there. The one in Fairfax was originally a High's convenience store and is now a bail bonds place was indeed owned by they same family. They were arabs and the 2 sons were both juvenile delinquents, I know because I lived near them and hung out with them occaisionally.

I also frequented Flipper McGee's, and of course, Spaceway Raceway and Time Out in Springfield mall. There was another arcade in Falls Church city I haven't seen mentioned here. It was on Broad St. near the intersection with Lee Hwy, in the same strip center as Brown's Hardware. I can't remember the name of it though.

@Needone

Have you checked Ebay? I've seen pinball machines featured on Pawn Stars before and also American Pickers on the History Channel, so I wouldn't think it would be too hard to find one.

Also someone mentioned the bar John's Place in this thread. They have several pinball machines there, but since it's primarily a bar, I don't know if kids are allowed in there. Been there a few times with the girlfriend to have a beer and play a few games. If you are seriously interested in buying a pinball machine you might contact them. They might be looking to sell one or have an idea where to find one.

Needone: Craigslist is a good place to find a pinball machine, but be sure to play the game for 20-30 minutes before you buy it to make sure everything works. Stay away from the 50's and 60's pinballs, they'll bore you to death. 70's and 80's are good.

Dulles Airport used to have an arcade in the main terminal in the 80's-incredibly early 90's. It was a great way to kill time before a flight.

I played at the one in Fairfax off of Main next to the power station. John's Place is an AWESOME spot to play pinball, and the rooftop bar is really nice in warmer weather.

People's Drug in Tysons Corner Mall had a whole aisle with video game machines. I worked at Playtime for a couple years, 1983-85. The owners of it were the cheapest guys alive. The eldest son was alright, the youngest one was nothing but trouble. He used to even get into fights with his pals every week!

The Dosky's were so cheap they accused me of stealing from them (I didn't). They just couldn't fathom how a kid could play games all day long without paying (I just played my favorites, and was very good at them).

I do have good memories of some of the regulars that used to come in there. BMW, JAB, Michelle and her girl friend, etc. That place was jumpin' for a couple years back in the day.

The Fairfax location was a lot nicer than the Falls Church one (which was a dive).

Hope the regulars are all well!

Hahaha, I was a regular at the Falls Church one around 1982-83. I also knew the Dosky's because they lived in my neighborhood. They were both in trouble with the police a lot when they were younger. We called the older one "Shitface" and the younger one "Tonto".
I was only ever in the Fairfax one once, maybe twice. Back then Fairfax beyond the surf shop was the outskirts of civilization for me. Now I pass by there like once a week or so on my way to Wegman's. Pretty sure that building is now bail bonds place.

Does anyone remember the small arcade that was sort of in Skyline Mall? It wasn't exactly in the mall proper, it was down a long hallway that was connected by the doors on the left hand side of the mall if you were facing it. I think it was also a sandwich shop that catered to office workers at lunch. As I recall it was never very crowded.

Back in the late 1970's there were 2 pinball machines in every 7-11 store.

It was great while it lasted. The machines were all pulled out by 1984.

There used to be an ice cream shop next to Johnny's that had all kinds of video games. I believe the lady was Korean. She was nice. I would always go in there and have her make me a milkshake and dump tons of quarters into those games!

I don't know if John's is the same place as Johnny's, but it (Johnny's) was a shithole back then and I'm sure much hasn't changed since then!

No mention of Annandale NOVA
7 to 10 pinball machines and a few video games.

For the most part, the crew that came to the Fairfax Playtime was a good group. But we only had 1 foosball table, and we weren't nearly as skilled as the guys from Falls Church.

There was no smoking at Fairfax, so it was a lot cleaner than the other places.

Around that period, there was also a half decent arcade at Mr. Gatti's in University Mall near Mason. There was also one at Showtime, who also had a kick ass Hi Def Movie Theater.

Regarding the Dosky's, the older brother had mostly cleaned up (from what I saw) by the time I knew him. I didn't even know the younger one was around until I think he got let out of jail and all of a sudden started hanging around, trying to get me fired for a bunch of made up stuff (while he sold drugs and stole from his dad's arcade, trying to blame me for the missing money). Eventually he was successful and I was fired for nothing, and the son started bringing his crew in there. I am sure that was the beginning of the end for that place!

They were so cheap one week I worked 90 hours, and got no overtime pay. I was 19 and clueless, so they were able to get away with that crap back then.

More memories

Foosball; the table sat at the Fairfax location barely ever being played for a long time. Foos just wasn't popular at Fairfax initially. But there was a period where there were no new games nor pinball, so we started playing it to fill time. Our table sucked, and had the slippery plastic balls. We didn't know any different, so we played with what we had. We heard that the Falls Church Playtime had a bunch of tables, and "the guys over there are really good".

What we didn't know is that Falls Church had good tables (Tornado and/or Dynamo tables), and used cork balls. Cork balls play COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY than the crappy plastic ones that we used. You can't grip plastic, you just knock it around. We did get very good at that style of play, but we'd think we were pretty good, then travel to Falls Church to show how much better we had gotten, to get our asses handed to us by the lowest tier of Falls Church player. See, you weren't allowed to play the "good" guys until you had bested the lower level minions first, that's just the way it was back then.

So we'd go home with our tails between our legs, and in another 3-4 months of practice have ourselves convinced we had improved enough to change the result, where the outcome would repeat again just like the last time. ;-)

Really the problem was that Dosky wouldn't pay for good cork balls (which wear out), while the plastic ones last virtually forever because they are hard as rocks, LOL. The Falls Church guys KNEW they wanted the good tables and balls, and simply demanded them. We were too ignorant to know any better, so we got stuck with the cheap stuff.

I ended up going to NOVA and eventually UVA, but not for a few years. By then the video game thing was out of my system, and if there were any games at Manassas or Annandale NVCC, I never noticed them.

But another funny couple stories. Dosky was the cheapest bstd I think I ever knew in my 50 years of existence on this planet. But he would every 3-4 months give me a handful of tokens from Chuck E Cheese. See, kids would use the CEC tokens at OTHER arcades, a lot of the arcades were set up similarly. It ended up being a pretty funny side event to the arcade business.

The way it normally went was you could use quarters in the machines if you were a NEWB, but if you bought TOKENS for the machines, you normally got 4/$1 instead of just the 4. But at most arcades you got 25 tokens for $5. So you were a moron if you used quarters.

Anyways, the Dosky's used to get SO PISSED that kids were using the CEC or Showbiz tokens at the Playtime arcade(s), because it meant they were playing Playtime games without spending any money AT Playtime for Playtime tokens.

Of course, we returned the favor, where we would use the tokens that Dosky gave or sold us (at a discount LMAO) back at the other arcades. Some machines would not accept the "wrong" tokens, but a surprising number of them would, especially if (WHEN) you figured out what technique to put the token in so it would be accepted.

We were using so many Playtime and CEC tokens at the Showbiz place near Woodson HS, they were REALLY pissed and onto us about it. They had a few new games that Playtime didn't have, because the Dosky's would wait until the game was 6mos old (and cheaper) before actually buying one. But Showbiz bought the new ones immediately. So it was a game for around 18mos of us trying to use the tokens, and them trying to catch us. It was hilarious to flirt with the girls there (they were super cute), and then go play a game, and as soon as the game was over the manager would run over to the machine, open the coinbox up, to try and bust us using a Playtime token. Only to find we had used a Showbiz token knowing they were going to check. ;-)

Gaming strategy in it's earliest forms!

Eventually we got lazy and got caught, and were banned from coming back.

Another funny story; one of the girls (I'll call her "B" for now) at Showbiz was always flirting with everyone (She was hot too) I didn't find out until I went to college that she was actually the girlfriend of one of my best friends at college. But before I knew him at UVA she wound up giving chlamydia to half of Fairfax (luckily I never experienced that one) over that time period, including my buddy! LMAO

"Why the shit do I look at these threads? They make my spirit hurt. I MISS ARCADES!"

So do I. I remember playing video games at arcades and also places like Pizza Hut, which typically had a few arcade games in the front of the store in the corner. I would play after swim meets and I got really good at Ms. PacMan and could beat my older brother (which as a younger sister is a really neat thing). I don't know if there are any places that still have a few arcade games tucked away in the corner.

I miss arcades.

Wasn't there one in Arlington called Rainbow right near George Mason Drive back in the 80's?

So to make some corrections on previous threads:

1. There were two arcades on Lee Highway in Arlington between George Mason and Glebe Road. The one closest to George Mason (1/4 mile from Yorktown High School) was called 'Rainbow' (they also had popcorn and ice cream). Was there probably at least from 1982-1986 (address: 5163 Lee Hwy). The other was up closer to Glebe on the other side of Lee Hwy. Near where Rick's Tattoo is today. I can't remember the name. We used to get tokens at Rainbow (8 for a dollar) and walk up to the other arcade which had better games (but worse token exchange rate). I practically lived at Rainbow the summer of 1982.

2. The best arcade in Arlington back in the day was 'Flipper McGee's', which was about a quarter mile from Central Library. That arcade was the bomb! Dozens and dozens of games. I know it was there in 1984-1985. They had 'Crossbow' there (classic game).

3. Godfathers Pizza on Lee Hwy (formerly Gifford's Ice Cream, now Joe's Pizza and Pasta) always had games and the place still does today. It had 'Donkey Kong' there circa 1982.

4. The Dart Drug on Lee Hwy/Harrison had a Space Invaders type game, circa 1982.

3. There has been much mention of Gametime/Playtime in Falls Church, but I could have sworn there was another arcade on Lee Hwy near where Euroworks car repair is today. That place was rough (like a biker bar for teenagers)! Walk in at your own risk if you were an elementary school kid.

4. The arcade near Buckingham Post Office in Arlington (once Theater) was called 'Galaxy Games'.

5. The Magruders supermarket at Lee and Graham Road in Falls Church had 'Star Castle'. How many of you remember that one?
