Right after you actually go through junior's room, pull out all the weed and oxy, and check his facebook and skype accounts where he talks about how much ass he's tagging and glue he's sniffing. Your kid's a flea and should be held accountable, so BE a PARENT. Otherwise start filling out those post-grad applications to the University of the Betty Ford Clinic.

I went to FHS and all my teachers were terrible and I had a 3.65 and went to a good school and have never had trouble getting what I needed out of school.
For the teachers to be to blame they would have to actually teach backwards. There are better teachers than others, but have yet to run into one that could actually send your kids grades backwards.
I know you can't teach adults anything so you are going to hold to your misinformed opinion since your parenting skills are beyond reproach. But I've NEVER had a kid with an F who actually didn't want one.
Please realize how apathetic and depressed you have to be to get F's in High School.

I know 3rd quarter report grades had a total 1519 F's. that is about 9.3% of the schools. But it just interm, and it could all change.

It's been many years since I encountered Mr. Whalley, and I can't believe that school allows him to go on! He's an incompetent. Does he still coach one of the sports teams? My impression was that was more of a priority for him than making sure his real students learned MATH. His students seemed so sad and worried.

Seriously? All you guys are doing is blaming Obama and mixing education with religion. You guys are forgetting the most important thing here our privacy! I mean if Romney was to be elected this still would've happened or if we all went to a religious school some students still might have failed. Instead you guys should talk about how this is an act committed against us as students because those grades were private!

i am a student at whs. if you don't understand what your doing then your grade is f*ck3d. teachers have no clue what they are talking about and are so dumb most things they teach are out dated and if you ask for an explanation of why the problem is like that or what the question is asking they just tell you to figure it out. also not being able to use personal electronic devices to help you makes it even more out dated. fcps needs to learn to get with the picture

its not Obama's fault. it makes you sound ignorant and dumb saying that. it is the state legislature and fairfax county that passes the different funding for schools. and not all kids the fail do drugs and alcohol. and not all straight a students dont use. at whs i have friends that have never used in there life that are failing and kids that use every day that have a 4.3 gpa

Hello Folks,
Just like with anything, speaking with someone on the front lines helps shed light usually from a different perspective. I hope to do this, nevertheless, I have a great deal to still learn.
1. Teachers....who start their 4th consecutive year in the same school system are almost always given a "continuing contract". This is as close to tenture as VA public school teachers get. Removing a teacher in years 1-3 is easy. Removal after year 4 begins is VERY difficult except in criminal cases. A teacher who transfers in from another VA school system and had a continuing contract can get one at the new job after just one year.
2. Unions....liberal political groups that collect millions in dues from foolish folks who cannot strike in VA. Ask your children's teachers if they belong and this will give you a sense of who teaching your kids. People who do not "get it" with their own money are making a regular impact on your child's thinking. Please take charge especially in these instances.
3. Kids at the extremes.....get the majority of the attention. The top scoring, academic scholarship worthy kids and the bottom scoring kids whose numbers make us look bad are two of the biggest groups where attention is focused. Principals want big numbers at the top and small ones at the bottom. They play games to try to justy their numbers. An example is the re-establishment of "study hall" now referred to as the school mascot's time. Some schools let kids turn in work over and over until a decent grade is achieved.
4. Middle of the road kids.....which is the vast majority of the FCPS population.....get moved along in the system until there is a problem identified and someone steps up...the kid, the parent(s), or a professional (not just a teacher).
5. Grades...they are inflated here in FC. Sit down with your child in grades seven and above and together read a few articles from any newspaper. Watch how yours miss the grammatical errors in the publication. Now, if the people publishing are getting away with it, imagine who is in the classroom. If yours is in 6th grade or below point out the errors as a teaching lesson.
6. Fs....old school teachers still feel this is necessary as part of the Bell curve. Fine. With the incredible technology available including blackboard, no child putting in effort should be a failure in any given subject, except PE shop, music, choir, etc. These performance classes take practice, not just showing up with the required equipment.
Suggested solutions.....take the time to have your child show you their homework and explain it to you. Example - history - did you know the BC is no longer used in FCPS. BCE is. This is how the presidency influences what school systems, schools and teachers do and say. Liberals do whatever when the White House has a liberal and they scale back when a conservative is in office. I have been watching this for nearly 25 years.
More solutions....Have your child show you each BB site for each subject. You will learn a great deal. Now, I am no fan of online textboks, but the accompanying media is wonderful. Short two minute movies that put entire chapters in visual perspective.
The next step....Contact the APs in charge of each school department and ask for the entire department to be on a single BB page. This is easily done with a single excel spreadsheet and makes handling schedule changes for students a breeze. This will put the lesser teachers (yes, I speak against my own) on notice as they try to keep up with those who are on the cutting edge of teaching. If your child does not learn from their own teachers, they can learn from the others in the department as you oversee their progress.
You might find this extreme, but putting people on notice is important. rewarding is also important. When a child tells a story at the dinner table of how something wonderful happened at school send email to the teacher. This positive feedback is all we get, especially at the upper levels, so please send it.

My kids get straight A's all the time. Mostly because I have always spent time with them and demonstrate interest in the world and critical thinking. When there is something utterly bogus or stupid on TV I am there to ask them 'why' and we figure it out together.
We have lots of fun, they do their all their homework every day before dinner and I do my best to foster love and respect in the home. Also my wife and I are both smart as shit so that helps ;)

Blame this whiny, spoiled, lazy, entitled kids. (Oh and their push-over parents) Tired of folks blaming the teacher - who puts in more time and effort than the kids. They get 50% for no work, test retakes, acceptance of late work and they still can't get high enough grades to be passing. These kids are your future and it is looking bleak.

As someone who went to a ffx county public school, getting a C basically just means you go to class and put in minimal effort. I didn't do great but I didn't get any F'S (on my final grades). It is sad that parents immediately go to "when do we blame the teachers?" As a recent student it usually isn't the teachers fault, but the lack of a proper foundation set into place by parents or the child themselves. Society has shifted into this whole idea that everyone's opinions or feelings matter.. In reality they don't. As sad as it sounds, if a child doesn't like something, the teacher can't stand over their shoulder and make them do it. Today if a child doesn't like something they have this idea that they shouldn't have to do something or try hard because it "isn't fair." Life isn't fair. My parents would put me right in my place if my grades were lacking. We need to stop praising kids for simply participating.. That doesn't breed for a strong or healthy desire to compete or achieve. Instead it tells kids they get rewarded for "trying" or just being there. The real world is very competitive and you don't get medals for just participating... You only do well when you try. So take a step back and show kids what they think is effort, is usually just being there and making excuses why they can't or blaming others.. When you point your finger at someone, remember there are three pointing back at you.

Yeah the 53% rule sucks. It makes it so that you can not turn in a test and get a better grade than someone who just doesn't know anything and wasn't paying attention all quarter. And almost no one does homework cause it just becomes a 53% meaning it does not affect your grade at all...I wish they would get rid of it cause it is not helping anything...except helping people who dont care pass easier.
