Crime Solvers Seeks Suspect in Theft of Antique Coins and Bank Notes

Fairfax County Crime Solvers is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for the theft of an antique coin and bank note collection valued between $300,000 and $500,000. On Saturday, April 14, around 7:20 p.m., an elderly couple returned to their home in the 3800 block of Stuart Circle in the Annandale area after attending a coin show in Charlottesville, Virginia. They parked their vehicle in the driveway and went inside their home. When they returned to the vehicle less than 10 minutes later, they discovered their entire collection of coins and bank notes missing from their car.

The items were inside three brown leather briefcases, two document holders and a leather backpack which were all hidden under a blanket in the rear hatch area of the car. Detectives believe the victims were targeted and that the suspect may have followed them home from the coin show. Some of the items taken were:

•1929 National Notes in increments of five, ten and twenty dollars. These notes are from but not limited to: The Peoples National Bank of Leesburg, the 2nd National Bank of Culpeper and Fauquier National Bank.
•There are also additional notes from these selected Virginia locations, Fairfax, Warrenton, Hot Springs, Staunton, Harrisonburg, Waynesburg, Strasburg, Roanoke, Marshall and Charlottesville.
•Numerous Confederate notes in denominations of one, two, five, ten, fifty and five hundred dollars stored in a document book with plastic holders.
•1932 Indian Gold piece
•Numerous commemorative half dollars
•One dollar gold pieces
•Confederate Obsolete notes (no other specifics)
•1922 Plain penny
•Numerous U.S. small currency notes(no other specifics)
•1909-S VBD penny
•Book of Confederate notes (no other specifics)
•Box of Indian Head and Lincoln pennies
•(2) 1934 $1,000 notes
•1934 $500 note
•1928 $500 note

Detectives are hopeful these stolen items may appear in the collectors’ circuit or at a future show. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS(8477), e-mail via our website at www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES(274637). Wow, you don't believe that someone would steal an elderly couple's coin collection out of their car in Annadale? Have you seen Annadale lately? They were lucky the car wasn't up on cinderblocks when they came back.

These people were followed form the coin show in Charlottesville, much like the jewel collectors who get robbed in the parking lot of the Chantilly Expo after the jewel expos.

you should be charged money for making such a crappy joke. there are theft rings that track these collectors for several days before they make their move. there was an article about it...but i guess that would have involved reading.

Annandale Coin Theft Still Unsolved
Coin thefts increasing due to rising prices of gold, silver.

Fairfax County police have not yet caught the person who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of rare coins from an elderly couple in Annandale, officials told Patch this morning.

In May, Fairfax County police officials reported that after attending an antique coin show in Charlottesville in mid-April an elderly couple returned home to the Annandale area only to have their collection stolen right out of the car in their own driveway, police said Tuesday. Detectives believe the victims were targeted and that the suspect may have followed them home from the coin show. The value of the stolen coins was estimated at $300,00 - $500,000.

The Washington Post reported this morning that targeted coin collection thefts seem to be on the upswing. The high prices of silver and gold, and the difficulty in tracking the thefts, may be among the reasons.

“Coin thieves are often part of organized rings, some from Colombia and others with ties to the Russian mafia, that orchestrate sophisticated, lightning-quick and sometimes ruthlessly violent heists, according to the Numismatic Crime Information Center, a nonprofit organization that tracks coin thefts,” the Washington Post reported.

This stinks of insurance fraud. Nobody, especially not a collector/dealer is going to just leave them in their car, go inside and hope nobody steals it. What are the odds, that somebody just happens to follow people home, and those people just happen to leave all their stuff in an unlocked car and walk inside?
