when do you all think gasoline will go above $4 per gallon in this area?

Exxon next to Lee Hwy just went up to $3.62 for regular unleaded this morning.
$3.92 for premium(!)

By summer/vacation season, or when the barrel hits 135-140. Whichever comes first.

With gas now $122 a barrel, up $22 in the last three days, we shuould probably change this topic to when do you think gas will go over $6.00 a gallon.

My answer - Mid July

Hillary better get that 18-cent-a-gallon tax cut pushed through! That will make a big difference.

Metro prices suck. Unless you live in DC, the cost of Metro is ridiculous. No other mass transit system in this country charges like Metro does.

personally, I belive crude oil will hit USD$170 per barrel sometime this year.

Sometimes I really wonder why Metro in the DC area cost so much. There's no
incentive for drivers to abandon their vehicles and ride public transporation.
(Metro rail or bus)

Last month, a couple of friends came to visit me. They stayed with me
for a few days. I took them to all the tourist places in DC, and then
made a side trip to Rockville. We spent nearly $37 on Metro rail fare
alone.... I should have just driven my car, which will cost less than
$37 in gas...

I take metro everyday from West Falls Church to Rosslyn. Total trip is less than 7 miles and takes 15 minutes.

It costs me $194 a month for that!! To ride a fuckin' subway!!!!

It is absurd.

What the hell is that? An F-450 mounted on ??? - it looks like some very serious frame rails and stand up to just about anything on the road short of an M1A1.

The Europeans have no problem paying 6-7-8 dollars a gallon for gas. I don't see what the problem with us paying that much is. So what if everyone can't drive eight cylinder cars? It's not like we can speed in this country anyway.

Here's an answer for everyone! LIVE NEAR YOUR JOB. Simple as that. Want the big city money?? Live NEAR the city w/ all the big city problems. You can't have it both ways... and if you do, its gonna start costing you equitable chunks of your take-home to do it. I work w/ some people that are now dropping 20% of their paycheck on these mega commutes of 130+ miles a day. Stop buying 4500 sq ft McMansions out in Haymarket to tickle the material girl. Local Yocals like myself know better. MANY of these mega commuters represent transplants from rural hometowns that feel like they need to live in the BIG HOUSE to impress their kinfolk back on the family farm. Why so many of them sign-up for these daily Bataan Death Marches is beyond me. Its literally like giving yourself a daily prison sentence. Baffling.

Do Europeans have the same tax structure we do for gasoline? No.

Considering we pay about 44c/gal. for taxes (States like NY pay, as much as, 68c/gal.), for us to pay a "European rate," we would be giving twice what we pay for a gal of regular (priced at $3.44/gal) for that 6 buck/gal of gas.

So has gas doubled? Who gets that extra $3.00 (or more!) you propose? Get real... Gas has doubled since 2001 to where we are now and l ook at the outrage and potential for disruption.

For the person who said live closer to work - I am about as close as I can get. I am roughly 8 miles from work. If I did nothing but drive to and from work, it would take a long time to drain my tank.

I live in Haymarket but my commute is 19 miles a day. I don't know how people can jump on 66 from my exit and go into the district though, must be one hell of a commute.

I actually didn't mind living in Fairfax, 2 miles from my job, until I realized I was paying essentially a mortgage payment for a shitty one bedroom apartment. I'll gladly pay the extra 80 bucks a month in gas (I carpool every other week) to actually own a place.

Excellent.. then your well ahead of the game, and prepared for the worst. When gas hits $5, you will literally begin to witness wealth destruction in the exurbs.

Doom dwellers talk about $7 gas collapsing most modern economies.. and $10 gas leading to outright anarchy. I guess at that point its all about rice and ammunition. LOL.

Personally though I think that a significant drop in demand would occur sometime before gas hits $10 a gallon, possibly balancing things out for the time being.

Honestly, I think there are a lot of people in this country that CAN carpool or take public transportation to work, but simply don't do it out of personal preference, image, or whatever. If gas hits $10 a gallon tomorrow, I guarantee a lot of people would suddenly "find" a way to go to work while using no or less gasoline.

Europeans also have massive public transportation programs that are
a. cheap
and b. useful
that is, they have a station where you want to go and are not as slow. In additon, there are many ways to change from subway/us to light rail. Such options are few in the DC area. Everyone in Europe takes public transport, thus buying less gas

Good point.

Even compared to US public transportation, the DC area is very sub-par. An area this developed in most other regions would absolutely have train service that extends much further than what it does here. For example, in NY, the hudson line of the MTA extends all the way up to Poughkeepsie (and it would've gone up to Red Hook if the residents didn't shoot it down). Simply putting it in distance terms, that would be the equivalent of the Metro going out to Strasburg. Yes, Strasburg.

everyone here has the reason for the high cost of metro fare incorrect. the deal is the metro is beyond capacity so to reduce the amount of people and reap even more money, they just jack up the prices. less people and more money == easier for them.

oh and the price of the oil barrels doesnt correlate with the profits on gas as the lay man would understand. refining the oil has always cost the same so one can understand why they have record profits AGAIN this year. $1 for a gallon was nice though that too is overpriced. it would be much nicer if the state taxed the on gas (oil companies) that comes into VA versus taxing the consumer. considering the profits they are reaping, i would tax the shit out of oil and gas products that companies bring/produce in VA. i think a 50% tax would be nice... and then torch them for price gouging if they raise prices higher than other states. it's not like they wont be making a profit, they will just be making less profit, so they arent going to jump ship on VA, unless they are dumb enough to let hydrogen based cars to get a foothold in the country.

Soon, it will hit 200 a barrel in all likehood before it comes back down.

"With benchmark US light crude passing the $122 mark for the first time on Tuesday, the warning comes from Goldman Sachs energy strategist Argun Murti.

Surging demand was increasingly likely to create a "super-spike" past $200 in six months to two years' time, he said.

Oil prices have now risen 25% in the last four months and by 400% from 2001.

Mr Murti correctly predicted three years ago - when oil was about $55 a barrel - that it would pass $100, which it reached for the first time in January of this year."
