Tried Tony's in Fair Lakes for the first time last weekend; got a slice of cheese and a slice of pepperoni (new york style). I don't get the hype. Their pizza sauce is nearly flavorless. It wasn't bad but it's certainly not as awesome as people praise it to be. Pomodoro and Mama Lucia's are superior in my book.

The best pizza is one you make yourself. Haven't found a really good pizza place unless you go to Grotto's on the Delaware shore.

How come no one has mentioned Lucia's in the foxmill shopping center? Not to be confused with mama Lucia's or Gregorio's (formally known as mama Lucia's)

I agree. The Italian Store is the best, but pricey. Santini's does it right on both quality and value. You got to have that thin, floppy crust, a little sauce, and tangy, greasy cheese.

It took me a while to warm to food in this area until I discovered that there are a lot of places that offer things I can't find in my native Philadelphia, such as authentic Milwaukee Frozen Custard, the gyros at Atlantis in Alexandria, Five Guys burgers (before they started poping up all over the country) and, oh, what they do at El Fresco in Chantilly! Doesn't mean I don't hightail it north at any opportunity to satisfy my Wawa cravings.

2 Amys isn't New York style pizza. It's Neapolitan style, and they were for a long time the only place in the area doing true Neapolitan pizza. There are several more now, but Amy's is likely still at the top of the list.

This is what Neapolitan pizza looks like...

That is usually a sign of using inferior ingredients, unless the same can be said for most NY style pizza.

Best pizza I've had locally, and this place has been around for over 25 years and going strong, is Saratoga Pizzeria in Springfield. It's a private owned place that makes REAL pizza, not chain store crap.

Folding the slice is a FAG MOVE. Mike O'Meara folds THE ENTIRE PIE. And eats it in bed.

Trattoria Villagio in Clifton. Better than Tony's and you can carry out. I've gained 100 pounds since first eating pizza there.

I also enjoy the Italian Store's pizza, but must say that, for some reason, it's better in Lyon Village than in Westover.

Is NY style pizza the kind you fold in half and eat at angle so grease drips out the bottom while you eat from the top?

Trust a family of Italians from New York. You can't beat Buon Appetito in Chantilly. And start off with their antipasto salad. You will be one happy New Yorker!

I was born and raised in Nassua County, Long Island and hung out, worked and lived in New York City. I was there until I was 55 years old. I have been living in Northern Virginia for 10 years. I tried pizza everywhere in the DMV area for many years. There is OK pizza here. But if you really want New York pizza, get in your car and drive to Manhattan.
