Okay, Who has the best New York Style Pizza in Northern VA?

I've tried some places advertising authentic New York Style Pizza in the area. It's good but not quite what I call "authentic". You guys were an ENORMOUS help on the New York style Deli I asked about. Now tell me, oh wise men of the Underground, who has the best New York Style Pizza in Northern VA?

Without a doubt Mama Lucia's in Fair City Mall. The best and closest, hands down. #2 choice would be Tony's in Fair Lakes.

Church street pizza may be round and look like NY pizza but it sucks. Pomodoro near Fair Oaks Mall is good. Luigi's in Tysons Mall is good. Tony's in Fair Lakes is good.

My opinion: Luciano's and Tony's are the best. Tony's is in Fair Lakes, Luciano's has a few locations. Bertucci's is very "Italian", but still has good pizza.

Stay away from the following:
Mama Lucia's (awful in general)
Paisano's (Some locations are just terrible)
Vocelli (not even sure if it's around anymore)
Domino's/ Pizza Hut/ Papa John's

Sure there are other BAD ones too.

people are clueless in this area because- screw ny authentic style pizza, these ppl have never had any kind of quality pie. people mention places like tony's because they are comparing it to celeste frozen pizzas or dominos. if you can get over the fact that yes, good pizza can come from a chain, zpizza has the most consistent quality. its a bad sign when every post is for a different pizza joint that nobody goes to.

Johnny's New York style in Springfield / Manchester Lakes shopping center is spot on for the pizzas I used to get while drunk in NY's East Village.

Outstanding place.

Mind you, it's NY style, therefore it's an abomination and not really pizza. But it is damn tasty. But if NY style "pizza" is what you want, Johnny's is great.

Maybe one of you aficionados can help me out here. WTF is "New York" pizza?

Whenever I here somebody from New York talk about the lack of 'authentic" this or that, I think about a woman I encountered several years ago out in LA. I was telling somebody about an Italian restaurant around the corner when this woman who was just walking by interupted me to say that they should stay away from the place because she was from NYC and that there is absolutely no authentic Italian food outside of the Shithole on the Hudson. Not her exact words, obviously, but it's waht she was saying. If she had bothered to wait for a response, she would have heard me say that the family running the place had immigrated from Naples just a few years before, but hey, I guess if it's not in New York then it couldn't possibly be authentic, right?

The owner of Tony's in Fair Lakes is the real deal Italian but the pizza ain't all that good despite the legions of praise

i occasionally get a sausage roll when in that area and no ain't the greatest sausage roll I've ever had but tolerable. over the yearshave tried several entrees and ain't nothing to get me excited

maybe just cause owner might be Italian don't mean they are great chefs

I've eaten at Johnny's at Manchester Lakes and have found the subs good not great
never tried the pizza

hey nobody mentioned Mario's ! ha ha

Some people mean very large, thin (but not crispy) slices.

Others might mean:

Forget everything the Tony's haters said. Go to Tony's. You should go to the original one in manassas though on Mathis ave. the other ones in manassas are also good. I have never been to the one in fair lakes, so I cannot attest to it. It is a family biz and each location is managed by different member of the family. My fam has been ordering exclusively from them for at least 12 years. And they don't even deliver, we do take-out. Some of you say the pizza crust can be doughy and it appears you have never worked at a restaurant. That happens when you have a staff of different people there- that can happen literally anywhere. You ask for an extra crispy crust when you order and it is good. Also it is commonly known by locals that the pizza is far better when you order a whole pizza rather than by slice. It is Lina common sense- the whole pizza is made fresh when you order, slice is not. There are also lots of other amazing foods there. I love the artichoke salad, the foccacia and the tirimisu. Even the meatballs are good and I am super picky on that. I love both the new York style pizza and the Sicilian.

Trust me. My dad is the pickiest pizza eater I know. Born and raised in Brooklyn.

Also, presto pizza in lake ridge is a newer family owned pizza spot. And it is pretty amazing as well and the owner is a super sweet Sicilian woman.

Pizza Hut, Pappa Johns, Dominio's, Vocelli's is all the same.

The one who was talking about Chicago deep dish, now Chicago has some good damn pizza.

Ciro's in Centreville, is good. One of my favorites, but I am sure it does not compare to New York or chicago.

The Whole Foods in Fair Lakes has good NY style crust on their pizzas, and you can get it by the slice. Not crispy, kind of floppy (and foldable), and with the chewy crust and tangy sauce.

Best NY Style Pizza around DC is at Costco! Large slice and a coke for under $5! Foldable, lots of cheese that doesn't slide off! I used to live in the Bronx and I tried all the other joints around here and they all suck. Costco is the best around FFX County. There are a couple of joints in DC and one in Arlington that have good pies, but for the money Costco is really the closest thing to NY Pizza!

It's not the question of beer and pizza, it's ales and pizza. I'll admit, I consider myself a lager man, and I can't stand ales... so I might be biased towards IPAs with pizza. But I can't imagine how that putrid taste could possibly compliment a pizza like Johnny's. Not that a lager would go with it perfectly either, but it would certainly taste better IMO.

Surprisingly, one of the best NY-style pizzas is in Tyson's Corner Mall: Luciano's. They also have a new place in Fair Oaks Mall but I have not eaten there.

Of course the Italian Store in Arlington is outstanding as is Tony's which has several locations.

If you're in the Annandale area, try Casa d'mamas which is very good. The Italian café on Lee Highway makes a good pizza.

Please, for God's sakes stay away from Mario's.

no problem. I am definitely an ale guy. Guess I should have clarified I was drinking a black ale with the ice cream. My favorites would be the Trappist or Abbey-style ales from Belgium, and that was before they were trendy. Now they're everywhere - you can get Chimay Bleue at Shoppers Food Warehouse for God's sake! This is actually a good thing, Chimay is wonderful stuff.

Alas, this is not a beer topic. But, if you don't like ale, no sweat, to each his own. I certainly would not turn my nose up at a good lager. Hell I'll even drink a Budweiser if there's nothing else to be had. That, however, is about as low as I will go.

Back to pizza. Someone mentioned Mario's in Arlington. My roommate, born and raised in Queens, gives Marios an enthusiastic thumbs DOWN and calls it shit whenever the topic is brought up. I thought the subs there were decent but I never had the pizza.

Mario's opened another store in Merrifield a bit over a year ago. I bought one of their large square pizzas there and brought it home.

As opposed to a large section of dough cut into a square, the pizza was made up of over a half dozen pieces of dough pressed together. The pizza actually broke apart into little amoebas when you tried to separate the slices and put them on plates. It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

And it tasted lousy, too.

Mario's on Wilson Blvd? I'm guessing that's a joke. You can't eat there unless you're totally hammered. There's lots of bars in the vicinity though.

I'm surprised no one's said anything (good or bad) about Joes Place Pizza and Pasta.
I go occasionally for the lunch buffet. I'm a former New Yorker, and it is NYC style pizza. Decent, not the best I've had.

Johnny's New York Style Pizzeria in Alexandria is pretty good.

Very personal.

Ciro's (say SEAR-oh's) in Centreville is my favorite. Don't know if it qualifies as authentic NY but I think it's the best in the west-county. It's in the shopping center across the road from the Giant on St. Germaine, and a few doors down from Centerville Tire and Auto.

3) Padrinos in woodbridge

Tried Tony's in Fair Lakes for the first time last weekend; got a slice of cheese and a slice of pepperoni (new york style). I don't get the hype. Their pizza sauce is nearly flavorless. It wasn't bad but it's certainly not as awesome as people praise it to be. Pomodoro and Mama Lucia's are superior in my book.

I agree. The Italian Store is the best, but pricey. Santini's does it right on both quality and value. You got to have that thin, floppy crust, a little sauce, and tangy, greasy cheese.

It took me a while to warm to food in this area until I discovered that there are a lot of places that offer things I can't find in my native Philadelphia, such as authentic Milwaukee Frozen Custard, the gyros at Atlantis in Alexandria, Five Guys burgers (before they started poping up all over the country) and, oh, what they do at El Fresco in Chantilly! Doesn't mean I don't hightail it north at any opportunity to satisfy my Wawa cravings.

2 Amys isn't New York style pizza. It's Neapolitan style, and they were for a long time the only place in the area doing true Neapolitan pizza. There are several more now, but Amy's is likely still at the top of the list.

This is what Neapolitan pizza looks like...

I tried pizza everywhere in the DMV area for many years. There is OK pizza here. But if you really want New York pizza, get in your car and drive to Manhattan.
