State Police Stakeout?

Neighbors have noted a long van parked in the evening with its motor (air conditioner) running. When asked is he could be of help, the driver said no and said they were state police. An hour or two later the van was replaced with another vehicle with its engine running. This incident happened in a quiet neighborhood on a cul de sac off a tertiary road. I wondered if others in the FU had heard of or seen such a stakeout.

Would it be lawful for another entity (ATF, ICE, county police) to identify itself as “state police?”

What type of involvement would state police have in this situation?

Would prior coordination be required with the county district police station?

Possibly but I don't know why they would

Probably just a FYI we'll be in town

Don't worry about it, if you don't believe them call the county police and have them send a cruiser out.

U P D A T E

Neighbor now recalls that driver said Fairfax or county police.

Now that makes more sense. A county police presence in the neighborhood is a good thing. My spouse says that there was less rowdy traffic on the secondary road that intersects the "stakeout" cul de sac.

Thank you Fairfax police department for your vigilance.
