A 24-year-old man was injured during a home invasion on Tuesday, April 15. Approximately 3:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Brandy Court, three men knocked on the man’s bedroom door, gained entry and demanded money. They struck him and a struggle ensued. Nothing was taken and the suspects fled. The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

see this is exactly why I support firearms. Most people would be quick to label you but I say who cares. If you are house gets broken into in the middle of the night , what the hell are you going to do? Call the cops? By the time they get there you can be dead. In this case you would be simply outnumbered even if they are not armed. I have a 12 gauge that is ready to go at any moment in my bedroom concealed. Any criminal who is smart enough will leave as soon as they hear a shotgun arm

I swear I see more illegal day workers in Annandale by the day. I got a full size four door rental truck for a day to get some moving done and have stoped by at the bank of america atm in Annandale where the majority of them hang out. I was being eyed the whole time I was there like I was going to hire some of them.

Not too long ago, I did a test myself. It took me 14 minutes to drive from
the nearest FCPD station to my house... at slightly above the speed limit.
I assume a cop can probably do it in 7 minutes with sirens/lights on. But
if someone had broken into my home with a gun, I'd probably be dead in 7
minutes.

Also did the same test driving from the nearest fire dept station. It took
me 19 minutes, again at slightly above the speed limit. A fire engine can
probably do it in maybe 10 minutes? I don't know about you, but I think in
a medium to large house fire, my house would be gone in 10 minutes.... :(

My point is that the police and fire depts are not obligated to save you.
Having the means to defend yourself and your loved ones is more important.
Keep a fire extinguisher in every room of your house. Don't smoke in bed.
Don't play with matches.. A message from Smokey. :)

george,

if your house is in fairfax county i am going to call bullshit on it taking 19 mins to get to the nearest firehouse. either you did not go the right way or there is a firehouse closer to you.

in general there are VERY VERY few areas in fairfax county that are much longer then a 5-7 min emergency response drive from a firehouse. most of those areas are in portions of great falls, clifton, and even lorton. those are small sections however and to combat this the fire department has opened station 41 located in the lorton/clifton area and has plans for station 42 which will be called wolf trap and located on rt7 between tysons corner and the loudon county line.

as for the police...they police work in patrol areas. the odds of a true emergency call being handeled by officers only coming from the station is very slim. even if the officer assigned to your patrol area is on a call there are still patrol areas on all sides of yours with their own officers.

in a true emergency call fairfax county police and fire respond very fast. i am speaking of reports of cardiac arressts/cpr, assualts w/ a weapon, serious accidents with injury, robberies and burglaries in progress.

In todays Connection there was a story that a Hispanic day worker was arrested for murder. Interestingly, there was no mention as to his status (legal or illegal). Above item mentions day workers.

Is "day worker" code for illegal alien?

well.. you're right... that's true for the majority of the county...

However, I live in the northern part... where the roads are narrow with lots
and lots of trees? Why should trees matter? Well... I'll give you an example.
The last three miles of road leading up to my house have 7 or 8 trees hovering
over half of the road. A regular size school bus cannot pass, so I often see
the bus driver cross the double yellow lines to avoid the trees on the top.
A fire engine is about the same height as a school bus, so that is a problem
for them as well...

I need to do another test from the police station to my house. Just off the
top of my head, I can think of 16 stop signs and about 6 traffic lights from
the nearest police station to my house. The speed limit range from 25mph to
35mph. A police car can obviously do 50mph to 60 mph... but the cop cannot
just run through all the stop signs wihtout slowing down. The intersections
do not offer views of traffic on the left and rigth, until you reach the white
lane at the stopsign. If a cop just runs through it, the other drivers will
not see or hear the sirens/lights.(again, thanks to all the small hills and
trees...)

Will post again once I do this test one more time tomorrow.... :)

george,

if a school bus cant get through a fairfax county fire ladder truck and rescue certainly will not get through...an engine or ambulance might get through depending on what it looks like.

however based on your description is this a private road?

also as for the police like i said the police officers get to their cars and go to their patrol areas. granted in the northern part of the county such as great falls and north of reston many of the patrol areas are large an officer is already in a car and near the area when the emergency call goes out.

as far as fire i dont know where exactly you are however i am assuming you are north and west of tysons corner...so your fire station could be 12 in great falls, 29 in tysons corner, 25 in reston, 39 at rt7 near reston pkwy, 4 in herndon, 36 near frying pan road, 31 fox mill (south of reston) or maybe if you are east enough 1 mclean.

i would be stunned if where you live is a 19 min trip from one of these fire stations.
