WASHINGTON - Rubber gloves, cracked eggs and big dreams.
His name is Khaled Khalifa and he is 15 years old.
It all started in a class called entrepreneurship at Wakefield High School in Arlington.
“It was like I'd found my passion,” Khalifa says.
His passion was business. The business of cookies. Khalifa was born in Egypt. His first time in America, he learned that the black and white cookies he had loved back home were something New Yorkers called their own.
They contain flour, butter, and of course, chocolate.
“I loved them so much, but they were 500 calories each, and I'm not the kind of person that would eat one cookie or two. I would eat like 10,” Khalifa says.
He wanted to slash the calories and found the perfect ingredient.
“Natural, local honey, so it's good for allergies,” says Khalifa. “I only need one cup of that. If i were to use sugar, I would need three and a half cups of sugar.”
The name of his product is Delicious Honey-Made NY Cookies.
Bcause he's replaced the sugar with honey, Khalifa’s cookies are relatively low in calories. Here's an example: if you ate nine of his cookies, you would get the exact same calories that you would get in three cookies made by the competition.
Maureen Naughton was his entrepreneurship teacher.
“It gives them confidence,” she says. “They can speak in front of people. They learn about marketing, math, pricing.
Khalifa has sold about 10,000 of his cookies.
“They're delicious. They're fantastic,” says Naughton.
So he gets an A for that?
“Oh, absolutely,” responds Naughton.
Khalifa’s mom helps with the baking.
“Just having someone behind you, pushing you to do good stuff and believe in you, telling you you're going to succeed, that means the world to me,” says Khalifa.
He and his teacher have now won awards from the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.
“He's so hard working, he deserved to win,” says Naughton.
With his giant prize check nearby, Khalifa is now encouraging the newest entrepreneurship class.
“When I have my own store, I would have one in Georgetown next to Georgetown Cupcakes,” Khalifa says.
