school Board Addresses FCPS Presentation on "Goal 3"

Did anyone watch the school board meeting last night? There was a presentation on "Goal 3" having to do with community awareness or something like that. FCPS has lower expectations for Black and Hispanic students. Say what???

Also, there was a strange display by Ryan McElveen, the bald guy. He went off on concerns about FCPS promoting "hegemony" and "colonialism." It was just weird!!!

I saw it. If you’re perplexed, you’re an idiot. It was explained and obvious, even after some of the stupid questions. They collected Civics data in year one and the Black and Hispanic students scored significantly lower than Whites and Asians. They want everyone to get to the top level (90-100% I think) by 2014. They set goals for improvement each year to get there. That is why the short term goal for 2011-2012 year was lower for Black and Hispanic students. The goal is for all groups to achieve the top level by 2014. The expectations are the same. I guess you think they should demand that all students get to 100% immediately.

Excuse me....what was explained and obvious? The fact that expectations are higher for white students than for Black and Hispanic students.

THE ONLY part I actually watched was the part in which Ryan McElveen launched into his pseudo intellectual diatribe using the terms Internationalization1, Colonialism2, and hegemony3. While I am sure he must have spent some time preparing for that dialogue and felt quite intellectual, in the end he came off as either confused about his points or as pushing Agenda 21 or both. In either case he clearly was in way over his head.

Additionally, I think he came off as an embarrassment for the Fairfax County public election process and what the teachers in our public schools must endure.

In the end it sounded to me like am agenda to push our education system into socialism.

I think a well crafted You tube piece may be able expand upon the McElveen “genius.”

1Internationalization: two definitions-
-Make something International: to make something international in character, structure, or outlook
-Put something under international Control: to place something under the protection or control of several countries instead of one country
2 Colonialism:
Practice of ruling nations as colonies: a policy in which a country rules other nations and develops trade for its own benefit
3Hegemony:
Political control or influence: Political control or influence especially by one country over other countries
4Agenda 21:
Global Environmental Program: Defined by some as the end of private property, the elevation of the collective over the individual.

You can't spell and I'm the idot? It's here NOT hear.

And...yes, I do think everyone should have the same level of expectation. We don't have different levels of SOLs depending on race or ethnicity, do we? Everyone gets tested the same according to the same criteria but has different levels of achievement.

Another thing: This "data" was all based on self-reports. What a joke!

Yes, I made a typo and you’re an idiot. Setting reasonable, but different, short-term goals along the way does not mean you have lower expectations. If I am driving to LA from DC and you are driving to LA from Chicago and we leave at the same time, after the first day, I won’t have caught up with you. By the end of the week I will have.

???Do you mean we both end up in LA? Yes, but not at the same time. And, if your car is not tuned up and the tires are in bad shape, you might not get there at all.
