Blood Trail Prompts Search for Missing Woman
posted 4:57 pm Tue November 18, 2008

Fairfax County police released this picture of a Hyundai Elantra similar to Yancey's.

HERNDON, Va. - The discovery of a blood trail at a Herndon apartment complex has led Fairfax County (web|news) police to launch a search for a woman believed to be missing.

Erika Yancey, 22, was last seen about 8:15 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the area of Dulles International Airport (web|news), where she dropped her roommate off.

Her car is also missing. It's a gray 2007 Hyundai Elantra, displaying Virginia tags KGZ4951.

Investigators launched their search after the property manager at the Camden Dulles Station apartments in the 2300 block of Dulles Station Boulevard called to report a possible blood trail leading from the parking lot to a dumpster.

Investigators say the discovery led detectives to determine that Yancey was missing.

"To detectives, it's rather obvious there was some kind of struggle that took place between her car and the dumpster," Fairfax County police Ofc. Don Gotthardt said. "That, combined with the fact that she's now missing, as well as her car, is very troubling."

The news has been unsettling to her neighbors.

"It's petrifying and scary, very scary," said Michelle Ross.

"It could me, it could be her, it could be any of us," said Tootie Renfro.

Police described Yancey as a black female, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 125 pounds. She has short, dark hair, possibly with blonde highlights, police said. She might be wearing a navy blue and gray, American Eagle sweatshirt and gray JB sweatpants.

Fairfax County police said yesterday that they are searching for a 22-year-old woman who was determined to be missing after blood was discovered outside her Herndon apartment complex.

Erika Yancey was last seen about 8:15 a.m. Sunday while dropping a friend off for work near Dulles International Airport, police said. The next day, the property manager at the Camden Dulles Station apartment complex found what appeared to be a trail of blood from the parking lot to a dumpster. Police responded to the building, at 2320 Dulles Station Blvd., shortly after 9 a.m. and discovered that Yancey and her car were missing.

Officer Don Gotthardt, a Fairfax police spokesman, said that although police are not certain that the blood is tied to Yancey's disappearance, "There's a lot of circumstances that would lead one to believe it's related.

"She may be a victim," Gotthardt said. "We don't know what crime took place. We just know that she's missing and her car is missing. . . . Based on the blood trail left behind, there seems to be obvious signs of a struggle. We just don't know between who and for what reason."

Gotthardt said police are "reasonably certain" that the substance near the dumpster was blood but are conducting tests to confirm that it is human blood.

Yancey drives a gray, four-door 2007 Hyundai Elantra with Virginia license plates KGZ4951. She has been living with a family at the apartment building since about July, although it doesn't appear that she is related to them, Gotthardt said.

Brownish blotches still stained the ground yesterday next to a dumpster beside the mid-rise apartment building, which opened this year, said Andrew Neilly, a representative of the complex. Neilly declined to comment on the incident.

A friend of Yancey's, Angel Edwards of Fort Lauderdale, who hasn't spoken to Yancey in about a year, said Yancey was from the Midwest, was fairly new to the Washington area when they hung out last year and had worked at Dulles International Airport at the time.

Yancey is described as a black woman, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 125 pounds. She has short dark hair, possibly with blond highlights, and might be wearing a navy blue and gray American Eagle sweat shirt and gray sweat pants. Police ask that anyone with information call 1-866-411-TIPS.
