Police Investigate In-Custody Death

Mason Police District – Detectives are investigating the death of an 85-year-old woman who died during a police transport. Officers were called to Inova Fairfax Hospital emergency room around 3:27 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, for a woman who was acting irrationally. They determined that while being examined, the woman exhibited mental confusion and there were concerns for her safety.

The decision was made to transport her to Woodburn Mental Health, located at 3340 Woodburn Road, for further evaluation. She was placed in the police cruiser and experienced medical distress during the drive. Officers immediately summoned rescue personnel and began CPR.

Mary Jean Martin, of 11131 Stuart Mill Road in Oakton, was transported by ambulance back to Fairfax Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.

Yes, because they have better, less harmful restraints. Plus it was Mental Health issue, which means the medics can adminster a sedative if necessary.

Idiot. They could have had her in the ER quicker than the ambulance got there.

You're the idiot, you don't treat Mental patients in the ER because they are acting irrationally. You secure them and transport them to a Mental Health facility under restraint. The ambulance has those restraints. If you keep in the back of a police car it gets very messy. TRUST ME VERY MESSY! lol

No, but you treat people in medical distress in an ER. She was in medical distress a block away from a hospital in the back of a police cruiser. Instead of driving her to the hospital, which again, is a block away, they decided to call an ambulance. PURE-FUCKING-GENIUS.

She was 85 years old, for God's sake! She had a physical problem that caused the mental distress. She should have been kept in the ER, treated for her medical problem, and perhaps sedated. Hasn't anyone ever dealt with old people?

I love how McGruff is posting asking for information, and they got information that stopping the cruiser a block from the hospital and calling an ambulance probably was a dumb thing to do when seconds later she would have been in the ER if they just proceeded there.

Then McGruff and his minions bitch at the people giving the info. Why the fuck ask for it?

you call an ambulance because if you dont know whats going on with her, and if she wasnt in medical distress BEFORE the drive started (story says she got bad in the cruiser) then you stop yr car and call in the professionals since you dont know WTF is going on. Cops are cops not EMT's, y'all.

@Dr - possible. sad
@mgruffer - what are you talking about?
@wingnut - um, would you wish to be held liable /responsible? If I'm the cop (hell, in ANY job I've actually ever had in life, or any job that I ever WILL actually have) I'm following the book when dealing with an old woman, that's for fucking sure
@common - ER aint trained for mental health, just emergency health.
@one - read my first paragraph
@officer - I cant even imagine what cops see sometimes LoLz

I have not seen it mentioned but was the Officer doing CPR and called medics? If the Officer drove back to Fairfax ER, it would have been a few minutes to start CPR. Think about once they got there getting a DR or medical staff out to car to work on person etc.

Someone is suggesting that the cop STOP CPR to transport her? That's a solid 3 to 5 minutes of her not getting any form of medical intervention. That doesn't include the time it would take to pile her back in the car after the cop unloaded her in order to asses her and start CPR. Not practical.

@whiners - um, we do. We people with human souls. You should try it. I think you can rent one from Sunbelt..........
@CPR - I think they are mad the cops didnt use their Time Turner or whatever it is they think they have.
@sad - yeah one cop did CPR the other got on the horn to get EMT's there. Said so in the article: Officers immediately summoned rescue personnel and began CPR.
