Can a Fairfax County Cop give you a ride after pulling you over

I hear that there is a controversy surrounding the Denver police for giving Carmelo Anthony a ride home after getting pulled over for a DUI. Can a Fairfax County cop do the same thing? Or is that illegal?

Apparently the answer is yes.

Back in 2000 I got pulled over for a ridiculous lane change violation and eventually blew a .086. This was around midnight on Braddock Road in Burke.

I passed all the sobriety tests and said "sir" a lot, and still to my surprise he didn't arrest me. He drove my fiance (now wife) and me to the nearby Giant so we could call a cab.

I still give thanks and praise to his discretion. Thank you officer friendly!

Edit: Thanks for the heads up Inkahootz - at .86 I would have been a corpse.

I don't know if it was legal or not, but I did have a FFX county cop give me and two friends a ride home(about a mile) after a buddy got a DWI.

We had been at Hooters and had one too many. The guy driving the car was acting like an ass and got pulled over. FFX tested him for DWI and put him in the back of a patrol car. Next they came back to the car and asked us if we could drive the car. One by one we said, "Nope, nope, nope."

We were about a mile from our destination so we told the officers we were just going to walk down Rt. 29. The officers didn't think three drunk guys walking on the shoulder of 29 at 2am was a good idea so another officer said he would drive us and drop us off. They searched all of us and then one of the officers gave a ride home.

(FYI- We were extremely nice to the officers and this was before cell phones.)
