Freon for air conditioner
Posted by: freon ()

Just got freon added to my air conditioner due to a leak that is now fixed. The cost was unbelievable.........over $700 dollars for 13 lbs. Did I get ripped off?

Really, a leak? More like teenagers stealing your freon to get high. But if you needed 13 pounds then you clearly got ripped off. Unless you have a industrial AC unit, because most large units use about six to eight pounds of freon.

That sounds like an awful lot for a residential unit, but the cost for 'old style' freon has been going through the roof over the past year. We had a leak two years ago that required 4 pounds and we were charged something like $200. One of the reasons we opted to replace our HVAC system was due to the cost of freon increasing to well over $100/pound and I did not feel like spending $600-1000 on a repair when the weather gets hot.

I have seen four and five ton units take 15 pounds or a little more. The newer r410 systems (Puron) can easily take 17 pounds. All this stuff is expensive thanks to the clean air act of 1990 and the dept. of energy standards for energy efficiency. In the 80's I used to sell freon for less than 10 bucks a pound (after my markup). Consumers who live in countries that do not recognize the Montreal protocol pay 80% less for the stuff than we do.
