A bomb described by Falls Church officials as an antique military explosive device was discovered and disarmed in the back yard of a Falls Church resident.

Falls Church officials said, at 10:22 a.m. Monday, police received a call from a resident in the 200 block of North Virginia Avenue about a potential explosive device found buried in the resident's yard. Police responded with the city fire marshal. The Arlington County Fire Department and the military also were contacted and arrived on scene, police said.

The device was described by police only as an “antique military device,” which was disarmed, rendered safe and disposed of by the military.

Police said the device was not a cannonball or a grenade, but offered no further details.

During the two-hour investigation, individuals in seven residences were advised to leave the area and nearby Cherry Hill Park was closed.

A portion of Park Avenue also was closed to accommodate emergency vehicles. There were no injuries.

The immediate vicinity was checked for additional concerns, but none were found, police said.

An antique military device found in Falls Church has been rendered safe and disposed of by the military.

Police had received a call at approximately 10:20 a.m. Monday that someone had found a potential explosive device buried in a backyard in the 200 block of N. Virginia Avenue in Falls Church.

Emergency personnel responded, as did the military. The item was determined to be safe, although it may have once been live. The military removed it.

A Falls Church official told NBC Washington they couldn't identify what era the device hailed from, just that it was "not modern."

During a two-and-a-half-hour investigation, individuals in seven nearby residences were advised to leave the area. The nearby Cherry Hill Park and a portion of Park Avenue were also closed.

The immediate area was checked for additional concerns, but none were found. The area was declared safe at about 12:45 p.m.
