Be Smart on Trails & Paths

Spring Safety Tips

Warm weather is here. People are venturing outdoors for leisurely walks, invigorating exercise and taking advantage of Fairfax County’s trails. Police encourage residents to be smart and take precautions when using trails, parks, paths and remote roadways in Fairfax County.

Police responded to a report of a 27-year-old woman who was power-walking around noon Saturday, April 14 when she was grabbed by a man on a wooded trail near Danbury Forest Drive. The victim yelled, fled the trail and called police for help. The man was described as Hispanic, between 5’6” -5’9” feet tall and around 150-170 pounds. He was professionally attired in a white, buttoned shirt and a dark vest, black slacks and black shoes.

In a separate incident that occurred around 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, a man whistled at a jogger in an area near Sully Park and Truitt Farm Drive. When she looked over, he was exposing himself and masturbating. This incident may be another in a series of similar incidents in the Sully Police District in recent months. The woman yelled and saw him run down a paved path. She described him as olive-skinned with a protruding gut, green shirt and blue jeans. He was between 5’3” – 5’7” feet tall.

While Fairfax County has among the lowest number of violent crimes in the country, many outdoor crimes include indecent exposures, drug and narcotic offenses, trespassing, destruction of property and assault offenses.

The police have safety in mind and officers proactively patrol the county’s trails, roads and pathways every day, searching for suspicious activity. They are out on foot, in their police cars or riding bicycles through neighborhoods, local parks or shopping centers. Crime Prevention Officers also play a vital role by meeting with residents, merchants and shoppers; they share helpful personal safety tips and crime deterrence information.

You are encouraged to follow these essential safety tips:

Try not to go out alone; if you do, make sure someone knows where you will be and when you expect to return.
If possible, avoid using trails after dark.
Do not use headphones at a high volume; make sure you can hear what’s going on around you.
Always look ahead and see what or who is around you. (Also if exercising, watch out for potholes, gates and other trail users and obey traffic signals.)
Call 9-1-1 if you feel you are in imminent danger.
Carry your cell phone with you at all times and pre-program 9-1-1 into your phone.*
Call the non-emergency number if you see any suspicious activity.*
Suspicious activity is any person, noise, car or event that doesn’t feel right to you.
The non-emergency number in Fairfax County is: 703-691-2131. It might be beneficial to pre-program your local police department’s non-emergency number into your phone.
Always lock your car doors and if driving to a trail or park, leave your valuables at home! If you do bring them, lock them in the trunk but beware of someone watching you do this.
Valuables commonly stolen from parked vehicles include GPS units, laptop computers, blue tooth devices, CDs, purses/wallets.
Remove any empty bags or briefcases from your vehicle to allay criminals’ curiosities.
Clean the GPS suction cup circle from your windshield.

*Do not hesitate to call the police. If you see something suspicious or are the victim of a crime (even if you are not hurt), the sooner you call the police, the more likely police can locate a suspect, individual or vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477, e-mail at www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES/274637 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

Always jog with copies of job applications. Our savage home grown sexual predetors will run for the hills.

Also, have some immigration papers on hand for those third world rapists.
They will likewise partake in a hasty exit.

Take along girlie mags. If you encounter a sexual predator, drop them behind you as you make a run for it.

McGruff, Encountered a guy on a trail with his pants partially down in back of the Franklin Farm shopping center last Thursday on April 12. Called the police to report after I told the guy to get lost, instead of leaving he starts walking towards me, I did feel threatened although I had a large dog with me. Still have not heard anything from the police. Just curious if this guy is still in the neighborhood....

Police Looking for Serial Flashers
Detectives believe more than one man has targeted females in the area.
By Mary C. Stachyra
http://centreville.patch.com/articles/serial-flasher-centreville

Fairfax County Police said Tuesday that one or more male flashers have targeted females—including young children—in the area near Cub Run Stream Valley Park.

The men have exposed themselves to women between ages 3 and 50 years old walking on the paths on a number of occasions over the past year, police said. Detectives believe there is more than one man involved, each acting individually.

Police provided a broad description of the suspects, saying the flashers are possibly white, with a light to medium complexion. The suspects are usually in a secluded area of the trails and sometimes cover their faces. They may be between 20 and 60 years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall and 150 to 200 pounds.

Police said the incidents took place on:

Tuesday, March 1, 2011, near Cub Stream Drive around 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, May 26, 2011, near Sully Park Drive around 3:52 p.m.
Sunday, June 5, 2011, near Weatherburn Drive around 1:30 a.m.
Saturday, July 16, 2011, near Deer Pond Court around 12:15 p.m.
Wednesday, July 27, 2011, near Stone Crossing Court around 3:30 p.m.
Monday, September 5, 2011, in Cub Run Stream Valley Park around 9:30 a.m.
Saturday, November 19, 2011, in Cub Run Stream Valley Park around 11:48 a.m.
Saturday, January 7, 2012, near Cub Stream Drive around 10:50 a.m.
Wednesday, March 14, 2012 near Cranoke Street around 1:30 p.m.
(Please note: locations on the map are not exact, but based on the approximate addresses listed here).

Anyone who encounters the flashers on the trail should call 911 as soon as possible. Anyone who has information may call Crime Solvers at 866-411-8477 (TIPS), e-mail tips by visiting www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus a message to CRIMES(274637). A reward between $100 and $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

I'm not saying he's the one doing it, but if you see someone who looks an awful lot like Gerry Connolly along a trail, you should head the opposite direction immediately!

I like how the politically correct police and media always avoid giving the most logical advice: Carry a fucking gun and stay the fuck away from where brown people live.

I subscribe to these as well and found them to be, for the most part, a waste of resources. First off, it happened 24 hours ago, but was only sent out this afternoon (on 4/20). Secondly, where the hell is Pierrpont Street?!? Fairfax County is pretty damn big and there are more than likely duplicate street names. Is it really that hard to include the area it's located (Burke, BTW) in the CEAN alert?!? Obviously the answer to that question is yes as it's never included. Third...what race is this d-bag? White? Black? Brown? Asian? If it's known, it should be included! Clothes can change, but racial features can't!

Stupid CEAN alerts. Good for absolutely nothing.

Hunterwoods plaza has a lengthy history of crimes, and this is no different. Although in the past ten years the crime rate there has dropped after they totally remodeled the plaza there.

Man Calls Out to Student Walking from Madison
It's not clear whether Wednesday incident is related to other recent suspicious incidents, abduction cases in Fairfax County.
By Erica R. Hendry
April 26, 2012
http://vienna.patch.com/articles/man-calls-out-to-student-walking-from-madison

A man confronted a Madison High School student walking near the school Wednesday afternoon to ask if she "wanted a boyfriend," school officials said.

According to school administrators, the student was walking between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Nutley Street and Windover Avenue NW when a man called to her from across the street.

The stranger was described as a white male between 30 and 40 years old.

The student did not respond to the man and continued on her way, Principal Mark Merrell said in an email sent to parents Thursday. He did not follow her or attempt to engage with her again.

Fairfax County Police and Fairfax County Public Schools security are aware of the incident, said Merrell, who also noted he would discuss the issue with students during Friday's morning announcements.

FCPD did not return a call seeking comment.

Vienna Police Officer Bill Murray said his department, which is in touch with the school but not directly handling the case, is not yet sure of any similarities to recent incidents involving students walking to school.

"It is recommended that students always travel at least in pairs, if not in groups, particularly when walking to and from school," Merrell wrote. "Please share this information with your student(s), encourage him/her to be aware of his/her surroundings at all times, and to report any suspicious behavior to you, school personnel or to the police immediately."

I heard they patched in a bunch of new members last month.
