German Restaurants near Fairfax?
Posted by: Dusseldorf Special ()

Are there any good German restaurants in the area?

All I found online were some misc European restaurants in DC and faux-German places like Doener Bistro in Leesburg.

Unfortunately I have yet to find any in Fairfax or Loudoun. You'd think there would be one or two in this area amongst the 100s of Mexican, Viet, Thai, and Indian places.

There is one called German Gourmet near Seven Corners in Falls Church. Has good reviews on Yelp. 5838 Columbia Pike is the address.

Actually it is closer to Bailey's Crossroads. Just west of Leesburg Pike on Columbia Pike.

Euro-Bistro in Herndon on Elden st has good German/Austrian food along with some other kinds of food. German beer.

I've had the Wiener schnitzel (choice of pork or veal), sauerbraten with red cabbage and spaetzle, and the jager schnitzel. They also have a very good German mixed salad.

I highly recommend it--I spent a number of years in Germany.

German Gourmet is NOT a restaurant, it is a retail store, and a very good one, at that! They used to have a 3-ring binder (aery thin one) that had a sheet listing all of the local restaurants serving German food. And as another poster pointed out, it is on Columbia Pike pretty much right at Bailey's Crossroads. They started out decades ago on Lee Highway in Falls Church.

I second Euro Bistro in Herndon for the food. Ambience, not so much.

I'll third Euro Bistro in Herndon. I've never been disappointed with any of their food. Regardless of what I order, I always start off with the goulash.

And I'll second German Gourmet in Bailey's Crossroads. Even though it's not a restaurant, they do have tables and chairs, but no table service. I'm not sure what sandwiches (if any) they offer, but the last time I was over there, there were folks sitting down eating stuff.

There's on on Braddock road. It's in the last shopping center on the right if you're travelling East going towards 495. I can't remember the name of it, but it opens at lunch and serves German sausages, kraut, cabbage and all sorts of imported German foods.

Yeah, Doener Bistro rules. I'm not sure why the OP calls it "faux", since it's actual German food made by Germans, and not some touristy lederhosen/Sound of Music shit.

Just look at the rest of the menu. Its some kind of Euro-fusion place. Currywurst, seriously?

And Bratwurst with no sauerkraut?!? Sorry, if they don't have sauerkraut then its not a German restaurant.

Adolf's is supposed to be pretty good, but be wary of the ovens. Per the previous comment, the German Gourmet is off the hook delicious, although its run by Koreans. Only in America LOL.

Agreed good food and not much ambiance at Euro Bistro in Herndon.

If you are willing to try DC, Cafe Berlin on Mass Ave up from Union Station.

Best German in the extended area is Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown... definitely worth the drive on a nice day.

I'm also a fan of Doener Bistro. Great beer and very good brats.

For an experience you'll never forget, drive north outside of Laurel MD to Blob's Park. You'll wonder what country you're in, and be very curious about the former careers of the clientele, but it's great German food, and polka dancing to boot. Always a lot of fun- it's just that the drive is a lot.

Anybody tried the Heidelberg Bakery in Arlington(near cowboy cafe)? Man I hate driving to Bailey's Xroads. I go about once a month to German Deli for brawts and sausage but I dread the drive. I moan everytime I go in about the closing of the Falls Church store.

Funny, I went to a lot of restaurants in Bitburg and Trier that did not serve sauerkraut; guess I was not in Germany!

Lol! Is that still going!? I used to go there, dance like the buffoon I am, and eat who-knows-what till I was as stuffed as whatever I was eating.

And that was, like, 30 years ago.

The customer set there, BTW, largely appears to work for No Such Agency...

I seem to remember a place in Fairfax called the Fuhrers Bunker. The food was ok and the wait staff were dressed like SS men. It didnt stay open very long. You damned well better leave a tip though.

If you get the opportunity, there is a great German place called "Eckhard's."

If you're in a small-ass town 2 hours South of Fairfax called Topping...

They make a good schnitzel. And their Serbian dishes are amazing.

+1 on the other references to Bavarian Inn, Shepherdstown.

+100 on Bavarian Chef, Madison.

+0.5 on Eckhard's. Sort of random to see that one pop on on FXU. Good place, but if I'm going to drive two hours, I'll go to Bavarian Chef or Bavarian Inn.

Greetings!

I lived several years in Germany, and man it's tough to find a good Schnitzel around here. There is one authentic German restuarant that I can verify: Zum Rheingarten. It really is worth checking out: www.zumrheingarten.com It's in Stafford, but worth the drive! See ya there!
