What is standard Chai for Bar Mitzva in FFX?

Local customs vary when it comes to monetary gifts (chai) for Bar Mitzvas. Anybody know the going standard in Fairfax these days?

Give around the same amount if it was the kid's birthday. It's no different than a kid's confirmation/catechism gift if he were a christian.

400-500 bucks is a hell of alot.

It's good luck to give in multiples of 18 (or add 18 to a round number) but the ballpark varies from locale to locale. If you attend the party you generally ballpark the price of the dinner and add the chai on top. Where I used to live $118 was about right for the chai. Just trying to see what works in Fairfax.

Since the event is in Fairfax County, a general rule of thumb is to check the latest valuation of the house of the celebrator and divide by 2000 for an appropriate monetary gift. This will give you an appropriate gift whether they live in Great Falls or Chantilly or anywhere in between.

It depends on the family. Areas such as Clifton, Great Falls and Reston have some rather rich area's, so you would be expected to give a little more like $2000.

It is also based on your ecomonic status. If you are a millionaire you would be expected to give more.

Wait, is $2000 the total amount of gifts, or the amount one person is supposed to give???

Also, I'm not up on Jewish customs, but I imagine you'd be expected to give more if it's your only nephew/grandchild, as opposed to the son of someone you work with.
