Internet Identity

My family shares a single computer and I have heard that you can actually buy and install software that will prevent your computer from exposing your ip address to the websites you go to. What is the good software that would do just that? and how would I be able to verify that it works? I am about to purschase a new computer and would like that feature

I've tried installing Anonymizer. It sucks. It slows your computer down so much that it is not even worth using. If you quit going to kiddy porn sites and cruising for 14-year-olds in chat rooms, you should be fine without it.

if you are willing to pay, do all your web surfing through a web proxy server. A cursory search of google yields several proxy services. That's all anonymizers are anyway.

Subscribing to a proxy service can have other advantages that are peripheral to the effects an anonymized ip has, and a lot of times these services will be able to let you skip around different subnets.

and yet you are the only one that is concerned about this. unless you are on some really shady sites or you actually are a pedophile, you dont have a reason to be concerned.

a proxy will not help stop you the cookies as well as annoying ads. there is an easy way to stop them though a hosts file. this is a zip file containing a windows installer for the hosts file: http://hostsfile.mine.nu/Hosts.setup.zip it also comes in all formats: http://hostsfile.mine.nu/downloads

additionally, you can set firefox to only accept cookies that you approve (a whitelist) which i do because i hate cookies that are filled random crap.

if you arent using firefox, you are an idiot anyway because using IE is something to be concerned about. seriously, exploits galore exist for IE.

You can't hide, so don't bother trying. Even your email gets read.

Some proxies will block cookies, javascript, etc.

If you think Firefox is any safer, you're just plain naive. IE is attacked more because they have greater coverage (like Windows v/s mac or *nix). Not necessarily that they're less secure, just more popular and therefore draw more attention.

doesnt that intrinsically make it a larger security risk?
