I did too, in Burke. One broke away making a huge, quick circle & then continued north. The jets were followed by 2 helicopters, 1 also made a circle and the spotlight went directly over my house.

Yeah, they just flew over my house and woke everyone, not to mention scaring the shit out of my dog.

I live about a mile from GMU. Anyway, I am getting so sick of this shit, first the county and their helicopter and then the jets. You're right, I counted 3 jets that were about 2 seconds apart.

Not sure what the hell they are doing, I don't think it's an emergency. Maybe another Jet-Blue pilot losing his mind and screaming about bombs and Israel, I don't know. What I do know is that this fly-over shit is pissing me off.

I was going to say something but it might be construed as the suggestion of doing a criminal act and I certainly wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea.

I heard them too. Freaked me and the dog out. If the military needs to perform training exercises, that's understandable...but do they really need to carry them out after midnight??

Yeah, I saw them too. I live near Dulles and I'm and aviation nut, so I am always watching and listening to all the traffic that surrounds my area. I saw two of the jets, their strobe patterns didn't match with typical commercial traffic in the area, they were flying faster than an aircraft at their altitude would, their engines were louder than a typical commercial jet (both jumbo jets and private jets). One plane actually caught up to the other -- that was my biggest tell as in commercial and civil aviation separation of aircraft is a very strict rule.

Cool nonetheless.

@Gemini12: About the after midnight comment: Yes, they do. In the areas they were flying, commercial and civil traffic during the daytime is extremely heavy during the daytime hours. The optimal time to preform an exercise would be during the night hours, where air traffic is at a minimum. It's the same concept used in the IT field. It's best to upgrade / maintain your servers when there is little to no traffic... this happens best when everyone is asleep.

That and they do need to do it at night to practice for at night ops. Cant train for night ops during the day

During a minor clash with Libya years ago our pilots discovered that Libyan pilots refuse to fly at night and have not been trained to do so. Here's what I have to say for those who are pissing and moaning because their tender little ears have been offended.

Sounded like freedom to me, thankfully we have folks willing to sacrifice for a country of spoiled whiners.

Curtis: Thanks for the cliche. I'm gratified that you just can't resist broadcasting your patriotic drivel to the world. Next time, try to unwrap yourself from the flag and stay on topic.

I know the standard line, they do these exercises to protect me and my freedoms. Freedom ain't free you know!

Yes I know freedom ain't free, I'm reminded of that every year around April 15.

As for training exercises to be at the ready to protect me and my freedoms goes? I'd feel much safer if they didn't pull this bullshit in the first place.

Remember, those who would surrender sleep for freedom flight exercises deserve neither.

Thats kind of an overstatement about what you are giving up. A jet passed over your house a couple times at night that many people didnt even wake up for. Its not like they took control of your property to run the exercises.

I'm an insomniac and on the rare occasion that I am able to fall asleep prior to 3 AM is a blessed night for me. That night I was unusually tired and was able to fall asleep at around 11 PM. Did I enjoy a good night of rest that night? Nope, fucking military exercises jolted me awake and threw me directly into an adrenaline rush so I didn't get any sleep that night at all.

Unless you're an insomniac yourself you can't imagine how valuable being able to fall asleep is to me and other insomniacs.

No I cant speak about that. That seems like a medical problem that needs to be discussed with a doctor.

My point was it was a single night of sleep for a handful of people. Id rather lose a night of sleep and have them get their training in then get a night of sleep and have something happen where they needed the training.

Just saying implying having a fly by night exercise is akin to handing over basic liberties was a bit of an exaggeration

Chasing UFO's or Fairfax 1, or the generic helicopter thread here?

The reason why they conduct them at night is for obvious reasons. In real situations, you don't see a lot of daytime bombing runs, do you? No.
