Can you identify this utility box?
Posted by: Pedro the Cool ()

been noticing this type of utility box on telephone poles for several years now. Rectangular in shape. I'd say 3 ft. by 3 ft. in size. Light green in color and placed about 7 to 8 ft off the ground. On one side of the box is a quarter sized very bright green light positioned towards the top. What kind of utility box is this?

If only there was some way to actually SHOW us one of these boxes... why oh why do we live in an era of sparse technology??

These are porn transmission devices. Don't mess with them. If the green light goes out, that means there is no porn available in the area. Call you internet service provider immediately!

It's for phone, but it's not the copper phone, it's the FIOS or cable version. The obnoxious light is for the techs that drive around when power is out so they know where to place their noisy generators so people's phone service isn't out for too long. If the light's out, a generator is heading your way soon, presuming there's no power in the vicinity at the time.

That device has nothing to do with "cable tv."

That is an Alpha device. They are protected by 3" of galvanized steel and contain all sorts of GPS/location devices and gyroscopes to detect motion and tampering. In short, don't touch it unless you want a visit from a few black Suburbans full of serious-looking guys in sunglasses and suits.

What is their purpose? They are used by the feds to capture internet and phone (land line) traffic. Be careful out there.

Thats a power supply cabinet for the cable provider in your area. If the power goes out it will keep the RF active through the cable, unless ofcourse the cable has been cut but a fell tree or something of that nature.

Some drunk knocked one of those boxes off a utility pole on Rt 123.

A Cox crew was putting it back up when I drove by this morning. Therefore, I must assume that it is related to Cox cable/internet.

It is related to the cable company.
It supplies power from the power company to a voltage the cable company can use to power their devices

This box provides power to the cable TV/Internet utility for a given local area. This is what allows the cable plant to interrogate and track REAL ID cards that are present within a fixed radius.

The green light just means power is on and interrogation status is Ok. The government is supposed to get a court order to receive the ID card tracking data, but supposedly companies hand it over without, according to some well informed conspiracy theories.

it's not a cable tv box, there's no such thing as "cable tv"

all phone and TV are internet IP

your cable provider uses network card just like your pc except configured for "long haul" (longer cable runs, which limits speed)

However, they can use faster NICs if they add repeaters (network hubs/switches) between them and you

because they have to wait (a cpu clock) to sent output from input, repeaters increase latency but increase throughput

-----------------------------

The box may have been installed by foreigners or contain hacked technology - or "owned" by a foreign country like germany (who claims they own at&t, verizon, ma bell on wikipedia), it may contain hack chips not made in usa. and likely it's subgrade equipment, not really secure - infact made to allow foreigners to hack in (due to clinton and obama)

so you shouldn't wonder what it is: that's extremely simple

you should wonder who iinstalled it and what components they used (FOREIGN OR DOMESTIC)

but you didn't ask, because, likely your a democrat who's hoping it's a Trump overthrow device of some kind

It looks like a power backup box for an ISP, but those are plastic and greener, not metal. If it says "Alpha" on it, it's part of Operation Alpha. That's the Trump-Russia-NRA conspiracy. I wouldn't fuck with it, you're liable to be shot by a guntard lurking nearby. These boxes are essential for the upcoming midterms, and the "election" in 2020.

Humpty Dumpty? Is that
you? "When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, β€œit means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.”

"Cable TV" is the term used for TV over cable, from, you know, a cable company. Your assertion is nonsense.

> all phone and TV are internet IP

Also nonsense. QAM can be but is not necessarily over IP.

> your cable provider uses network card just like

QAM cable modem is not using a network card same as your PC. There is surely TCP/IP in the flow, but using that logic, your USPS mail is delivered by airplane.

Which of course they do, at the pedestal, among other places. What on earth are you babbling about

> because they have to wait (a cpu clock) to sent

and someone watching a one-way feed cares about latency because...why?

Just a Power Supply Cabinet they have been around for DECADES they contain 3-9 batteries a inverter and most now-a-days a transponder for remote monitoring, all they do is convert AC to DC to power the amplifiers in the cable plant, and in the event of a power outage they switch to batteries and keep the plant up and running.

Yes
That is a power supply box for CATV.
It has 3 27 group series car batteries in it along with a power supply/rectifier, which provides A/C through the outside of the internal copper core so it can power the trunk amps and line extenders located in a another location.
The 2 main companies that make these are Alpha & Lectro
They all used to be 60 volts a/c ,but when cable companies became phone companies also they had to UP the voltage to 90 volts a/c , because it takes 90 volts to make a landline phone ring. !!!

They aren't car batteries. They are deep cycle AGM batteries. Different terminals, different construction. And they cost more than car batteries.

No, they upped the voltage to 90 volts to power more amplifiers and nodes off of one power supply.

Phone ringing voltage had nothing to do with it. Every modern circuit you'll find that generates a phone ringing voltage is designed to run from low voltage DC, from 5 volts to 48 volts depending on the application.
