Morel Mushroom hunting in Fairfax

Hey is anyone into mushroom hunting in the Fairfax area? I see from a differnet message board that a few have been found already this spring at Mason Neck.

I've been out in local parks...the season is RIGHT around the corner!

If you're into morels check out the web site for Barboursville winery. They are doing a wine dinner on May 3rd that features morel mushrooms. They have an expert on wild mushrooms who speaks for a bit, passes around samples of morels, tells you how to find them and how they need to be prepared. We went last year and had a really nice time. This is one of the best local wineries.

I love to hunt morels and there are plenty of them in Fairfax if you
just know where to look. My "secret" hunting ground is passed by thousands
of cars every day. If you havent had them, too bad. They are especially
good with a t-bone (with lots of fat!) right off the grill. This website
has a Virginia message board:

yes, i've been watching the message boards...seems its just about time for them to pop, especially after the rain of the last few days.

I've located a few "high probability spots" that i'll spend time looking in--going out today for a walk/hunt!

Slimey--what kind of terrain, tree types, etc do you think bring the highest likelihood of success? Not that i'd ask you to give up your spot, of course--just comparing notes...lots of nooks and crannies in and around fairfax to look!

Ha, I was thinking the exact same thing... I guess you better keep a copy of Pink Floyd's "Obscured by Clouds" record on hand just in case you picked the wrong ones!

I look for a stream that runs directly into a woods. (hardwoods are best)
It seems that the best "pickings" are usually within the first few yards
into the trees. Right after a rain when the sun comes out seems to work
best for me. I also have "smelled" the spoor before and it has a very
musky "dust" smell to it. (not quite what I'd call pungent though)
Its perfectly okay to hunt them on public land, but private land requires
permission from the owner. I have a spot that sits right behind a townhouse
complex and have been finding them for years now. Silence is golden.
If you tell, others will go there too. Once you find some, or even one
for that matter, the area will continue to produce morels. Its best not
to disturb the ground you pick them from as the spoor is still active.
Good hunting!

yeah, they are sooo much better if you cover them with rat-poison and then chase 'em with a glass of Drāno.

Morels are very distinctive in appearance - are there bad/deadly mushrooms that look like them?

Yes, they're called false morels and they can be difficult to distinguish from real morels. The best way to tell if it's a false or real morel is to cut them open. A real morel is completely hollow inside, stem and all.

google morel mushroom hunting. There's a couple different sites that explain it pretty well. If you're not sure, don't eat it. Not worth the risk.

False Morels arent hard at all to distinguish--just follow the above advice. If you've seen pics of both, you're 98% there. Ive never even seen one in my years of morel hunting.

and NOW is the season. Happy Hunting!

PS disregard the comments of the trolls above. They have no fucking clue.

I might like to go hunting for morel mushrooms. I'm very allergic to poison ivy and sumac and would have to wear boots and gloves. Where do I go in Fairfax, Va?

They are REALLY hard to see until your eye is developed. Those little heads just above the leaf litter just don't show up well in the filtered light of the woods (but I did see one today at eye level on a hill ;-)

Regarding poison ivy -- while I'm not sensitive to it, I have seen a TON while hunting and finding. If it is a problem for you, take precautions!

A lot of treed areas are producing -- a friend picked some up in rock creek park this week.

I want Morels!! Found some dried this winter and put the leftover fried ones in my Thanksgiving stuffing, delicious! Is it too late to look in the area? I walk the Accotink trail everyday, but havent seen them. Assumed the deer got to them already. Anyone have tips on where they are abundant, or want a tagalong for hunting them? I hunted every year in Nebraska until moving here.

Morels are found near creeks and around tulip poplar trees in the spring. Short season for them. Oyster and lions mane mushrooms are white and are found on fallen trees near creeks. Oysters are yummy and have gills underneath. You can buy these sometimes at farmers markets or maybe whole foods. I think it's called lions mane are white and thicker layered. I don't find them very tasty though. Get a book with pictures. Do a search on Chris Matherly. He lives in Georgia and does forays around the US. Unfortunately he diesnt do forays in this area He will look at pics on his website and tell you if they are edible mushrooms or not. Good luck!

False Morel has a ribbon flap in the stem, the correct on has a hollow stem. Soak in salt water to get the bugs out

My lady has family near Lincoln Nebraska that used to get Huge morels from a creek bed/copse of trees by their house. Some were nearly a pound! They'd dry some and mail em to us here in VA, yum.

Dear Pink Floyd mushroom picker,
U a dumbass!
Where a morel grows is way different than where psilocybin grow!
They look nothing alike.
If you think that eating the wrong type of mushroom means a trip, think about the alternative.
Kidney failure within hours w some ‘shrooms.

Keeping it reel,
