Is "Todai" seafood buffet at Fair Oaks Mall any good?

This past weekend, my in-laws and us were trying to get in...
but there was a 20 to 25-minute wait, so we went somewhere
else... :( The place was really packed...

The other reason I'm asking is that the folks running
"Todai" does not appear to speak any Japanese at all...
Not sure if this is a good sign or bad sign for a sushi
place? (mind you, my Japanese is extremely limited...
since I was only stationed there for less than 2 years)

Its overpriced what what they offer, IMHO.

You can only eat soo much sushi in one visit.

They have people from other asian countries working there.

Its a chain.

I'm not big on sushi, but I hate the place and its extremely overpriced. Go to one of those cheap asian buffets that offer Lo-mein and eggrolls. Todai=terrible

I agree, but isn't that what America wants. Spending like 30 dollars for some sushi that doesn't taste good at Todai is beyond me when I get tastey chinese junk food a lot cheaper.

Matsuri in the Reston/Herndon area off Elden St. has excellent value. The sushi buffet is about $13 for lunch and $17 for dinner and they have a wide selection of nigiri and rolls (except yellowtail, which if you really want, you'll have to order a la carte. -§

I guess.

When Todai started out - it was better.
That was like what 3-4 years ago.

People who work at the desert counter puzzle me the most.

I ask for TWO crepes, dude gives me one. EVERY fucking time LOL

So now when I go, I give the guy TWO plates LOL

but yeah, there are better values out there.

Over years I have had good expirience with Golden CHina in Chantilly.
Its small, its never crowded at night, but their basic buffet has all you need.

Agreed, Golden China is a great value, and if your lookin for tastey asian food that is the place. The other good place I like is the Wok n' Roll in Manassass, it doesnt look like the prettiest restraunt but they got some damn good food for a buffet.

Peter Pan chinese buffet was in Fairfax, not Vienna, it was near Fairfax Circle. I haven't been there in 5+ years, so I don't know if it still exists or not.

FWIW, I used to work with a chick that grew up in Beijing, and she routinely stated that Peter Pan was the closest thing to China that you would ever find around DC.

I remember alot of "strange" things on the buffet; dishes I've never seen anywhere else at a "chinese" restaurant.

I don't know if it's still there but I do remember it being "unique".

Also, they did not serve sushi of any kind.

Chima near Tysons is so much better. Same price, better food, more elegant setting and they employ classier adults, not awkward, unprofessional kids like Texas de Brazil.

The secret is to go to Todai during lunch and it's only $15. Same food as dinner except for some seafood like crab legs, but who goes to a sushi buffet for that? Either way Todai is good if you go no more then once every couple of months. If you over do it you will get sick of it. The sushi quality isnt the greatest, but they have a good variety which makes up for it. But I have to say I prefer the Chinese restaurant two doors down as they have some specialty noodle soups and they have their own home made noodles, check it out.

Todai is very average. and run by Koreans, like 99% of all sushi restaurants in NoVa. If you want quality sushi prepared by Japanese try Blue Ocean in Fairfax or Tachibana in McLean.

Will try Blue Ocean... never even heard of it until now.

As for Tachibana... they are okay, but very over-priced.
The service isn't good(borderline rude) when the place
is busy. Whenever I go there, Tachibana seems to be
filled with older, retired couples in their 80's who
cannot decide what they want after reading the menu for
15 bloody minutes.... :D

Koreans are not interested in quality. They want your money with the shitiest product they think you would eat.

It is their style

I like Todai. Lots of yummy rolls, made-to-order items, crab legs, shrimp, lobster, and many other goodies. They also have a crepe station for dessert.

Korean, or no Korean, Todai is your best bet for sushi all-you-can-eat buffets around here. The seafood to rice ratio is the highest (nigiri), and the makki rolls are on par or higher with other buffet establishments. They have the widest variety of the aforementioned. They even have a small selection of cups of sashimi (albeit mixed in with mushrooms, etc...but no rice). All of the above, is for lunch. For dinner (more expensive) they even have more of a selection like crab legs, yellowtail nigiri, and so forth. Buffet-speaking, you can't beat this place.

If you go for menu items and a-la-carte, Todai then just becomes average. Hama sushi in Reston (Herndon?), and Sweet Ginger in Vienna are the best tasting IMHO.

I went there for my birthday last year, a lady seated next to us had her dog in her lap. We complained, they did nothing . The icing on the cake is when she went to get her food with her dog in tote, we walked out and did not pay. They chased us out and said they would call the cops, I told the guy thats fine I wanted to have record of the incident when I called the health department, he backed down after that and we left. We refused to pay because we did not get to eat what we wanted to, after a few rolls of sushi and seeing that dog I lost my desire to eat there.

Way to expensive. If you really love sushi it's fine I guess. But it is an extravagent amount of money for what you get if you do not have a taste for it. The best place is Bamboo Buffet in Woodbridge, they have some sushi, but they have great meats, egg rolls and crab ragoon, for like 12 dollars a person. A much better bet, for a taste of Asia.

I just wanted to point out that Todai *was* good when they first opened- they had top-notch quality sushi for a while.

I went back a few years after they opened and it was HORRIBLE.

Ichiban in McLean is where my money goes now.
