2012 Redskins *The NEW Era begins*
Posted by: Hatemotor ()

The trades been made, the Redskins gave up a king's ransom to get RGIII,,,

In previous threads I stated I was against such a move, but now we have to take a look at the other side,,

There is finally going to be a blue chip player at the QB position for the first time since Sonny Jurgenson,,,

He is a good fit for what Shanahan likes at the position,,,

Free agents will want to come here to play with, and WIN with him,,,not just look for the big pay day

Every other QB in the division has about 10 years in the league,if RGIII works out,in a few years he will be the established QB in a division where the other teams are looking for their next QBs,,,

Maybe this will set the stage for a return to D.C.,,I would love to see that

The existing thread on this topic wasn't good enough for you?

You always want to be the thread starter, don't you?

Yes,,,

And I wanted to broaden the focus,,,the trade will impact the team beyond just getting a franchise QB,,,

The other threads are focused on whether or not it was a good deal,,,

At this point it really doesn't matter, the deal IS done,,,

I’m not sold on this deal, but see that it might work. The Skins still have 7 picks this year and a lot of cap room. We should be able to draft some decent linemen, get two or three strong free agents to fill holes in the talent positions, and draft RG3. Maybe not this year, but if RG3 pans out, the Skins could be heading in the right direction. We may not need 1st rounders in 13 & 14 if we secure good free agent talent (remember, Vinnie is gone).

If I cared more, I'd collect all the other threads of similar titles from the past 10 years that have ended up on this site.
This year is no different from the "NEW" joe gibbs era, or any other redskins change.

Every draft pick is a risk,,,the higher you pick the less risk there should be,,,but it doesn't always work out that way,,,

The Redskins only gave up ONE PICK in this years draft, the second rounder,,,
and they will add a player at the most important and expensive position at the rookie wage scale level,,,

I think it's reasonable to assume with all the cap space they have they will be able to add a few players to offset that loss,,,

Say what you want, but Shanahan did well with the draft picks and free agents last season.

The young guys all got a chance to play, and we should get an idea over the next season who the true keepers are,,,

If they continue to manage the cap well, they may be able to add a few key free agents over the next two seasons to offset the loss of the #1 draft picks also,,,

Right now the team is shaping up to have a nice mix of youth and experience,,,

One thing that was pointed out by an analyst yesterday is that much of the risk in drafting a high first round QB was the amount it would cost to sign an unproven guy. However with new CBA that part of equation has been removed. So if he's a flop the organization not only sucks but isnt bankrupt either.

They gave up a multitude of first round picks for RG3, realistically speaking he needs to get us to 8-8 his first year, then in his 2nd and 3rd year he needs to make significant strides. We need immediate return from this pick. Someone like a Cam Newton who showed last year that in the future he can bring the Panthers to great success

Unlike every other position on the field, QB has the biggest intangable effect on the mentallity of the team, the coaches, and the fans,,,

And your opponents,,,

Case in piont,,,Jimmy Clausen / Cam Newton

The Panthers players and coaches were not won over by Clausen and his attitude, they did not play hard for him and probably made him look much worse than he is,,the other teams knew the players weren't going to make plays for jimmy and unloaded on him,,,

Cam, on the other hand, won the players over in training camp and sent Clausen to the inactive list every week,,the players clearly played harder, the fans were excited and even though the Panthers did not have a winning record, every one feels good bout the future of the franchise,,,and he earned the respect of the opposing teams,,,

A huge part of the game is mental,,,and if you feel good about your situation you'll play like it,,,

Just ask the Giants, no ones accusing them of having the most talented team (as a matter of fact, many posters on this forum said the first win against the Giants was against a crap team) but they believe and thay have 2 super bowl trophys to show for it,,,

look, Snyder has noticed the dropoff in revenue over the last few years. This will guarantee a spike in sales and interest in the Redskins. He had to do it. What would have happened with another Rex G. season? Fan morale would continue to sink along with sales and revenue. This is like Microsoft releasing a new version of Office or Windows every couple years, its just business.

2012 - Sell farm to get Luck or RG. Vincent Jackson ?O line still is suspect. D will peak as young guys mature and old guys use up their last gasp. Bench Rex in second half to give new guy reps. Season is a throwaway.

2013 - Unable to add much to team through draft, limited ability to get FA. Unreasonable preseason expectations hurt QB's confidence. Boy Shanahan throw him under bus in week 9 after 2-6 start. Lucky to get to .500.

2014 - Press creates more pressure in preseason. Shanahans do not help. O line still sketchy due to inability to improve through draft or FA. Slow start, get to .500. Shanahans fired.

2015 - QB must learn new offense..starting all over.

Anyone that supports this move today loses all rights to compain about Snyder in the future!!!

You can't have it both ways. Either you support playing real life "Fantasy football" with this team or you build it over the long term through compiling draft picks and taking less sexy role players who solidify the team.

All you Snyder-haters out there can't love this deal today then bitch about him three years from now when RGIII gets injured or turns out like Jamarcus Russell, Matt Leinert, Brady Quinn, Jimmie Clausen, Ryan Leif, Andre Ware, Heath Schuler...or even like Donovon McNabb did for the Skins.

This town wants instant gratification even though it has never worked - I am amazed how quickly Skins fans forget! It was just a few short months ago you were all fired up about getting McNabb and before that Gibbs. Even if RGIII is great, he still needs a team around him.

Before his draft Mel Kiper called Brady Quinn the most NFL-ready QB he's ever seen. Don't buy into the hype!

In middle of 2012 season, RG3 rolls out in a bootleg, gets nailed by a Cornerback blitz that nobody picks up, tears his ACL. Is a backup QB in Miami by 2014.

I'm not saying anything about any Superbowls. If we do getr RGIII, with THAT type of talent...we get say, V Jack at WR, maybe add some O Line depth and a CB/FS with our remaining picks. Winning the division is very realistic. Hell, if Shanahan (as bad as Rex was) did not put the Stormin mormon in, we still could have competed for the division. You can clown all you want, but an NFC East team (Giants) won the Superbowl. The same team...wait for it...that MY Redskins swept this past season.

HAIL BITCHES!!!

I was just about to post this. LOL!!!

http://nfl.si.com/2012/03/12/nfl-hits-cowboys-redskins-hard-by-docking-salary-cap-space/?sct=nfl_t2_a3

This is the best part:

That’s a huge price tag under any circumstances, but Washington pulled the trigger on the deal with upwards of $30 million in projected cap space for 2012 — money everyone expected the Redskins to use to upgrade at several positions, including wide receiver. Monday’s smackdown from the NFL could put all that in jeopardy.

Way to kick it off. Welcome to 2-14.

In all fairnes this is very unprofessional on the part of the NFL,,,

24 hrs before the start of free agency you drop this bomb?

The NFL knows teams spend months preparing for this date and and now have to make a new plan at the last possible minute,,,

That and not being able to come up with a cap number until a few days ago,,,

Very unfair to the players who are now last second cap casualties too,,

It's either incompetent league management or strong arm tactics to show who has the power,,,Kind of Goodell"s M.O. at this point,,,

So they got a shiney new quarterback and now they won't be able to invest in the players they desperately need to keep that quarterback healthy and off the I.R.

Every defender on every other team is going to be gunning for him. Poor RG3 is going to spend more time on his back than throwing the ball. I wonder how long it will be before he's injured.

I actually feel kind of bad for RG3. He's got to be looking at the dysfunction, perpetual drama, and culture of losing that surrounds this team and thinking, "What the fuck have I gotten myself into?!"

I understand what Jones and Danny did and in any other industry they might have a case (since CBA wasn't in force). However, I have to imagine that by being part of the NFL, you agree to certain legally binding terms...such as following directives from the head office that have to do with the salary cap.

Apparently Jones and Danny Boy can take the hit over two years in whatever proportion they want, so I assume they will kick the can down the road and take the full hit in season two, hoping they will have a legal remedy before then.

I thought I remembered something from quite awhile ago that contracts had to be approved by the league. If that's true, but as I frequently am could be wrong, I wonder if the league knew about the deals ahead of time.

Seems like this might fall into the category of ex post facto laws. Of course, like someone said about, this will provide a whole fleet of new Jags for the lawyers.

The NFL has said they were providing guidance and issuing warnings to Snyder and Jones for two years. Bruce Allen coming out and saying this is the first they've heard of it is either a crock of shit or Danny Boy didn't have Allen in the loop on this shit (which is probably the case). In fairness to Allen, the Haynesworth deal was in place when he got here. Not sure if that's the case for D. Hall, but I think it's pretty self-evident much of this is Snyder's doing.

I think there's a case,,,

Thus, the union had no real option. Without consenting to the reduction of the Redskins and Cowboys cap numbers, the unadjusted cap limit would have dropped, for the first time ever.

And with NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith up for re-election this month, he quite possibly would not have been re-elected.

The Cowboys and Redskins are clearly at a competitve disadvantage now, due to the reps of the NFLPA and the league office,,,and the timeing is the main reason,,,
They might be able to enforce this punitive measure, but I think the lawyers will get this set aside for this season and/or negotiated to a more fair time table,,,

They were talking about this on WJFK this afternoon, so grain of salt:

Apparently the Skins have not received any official documents from the NFL regarding the salary cap reduction. That's what BA is talking about.

The NFL has not done this because once they put it in writing it will prove the case for collusion and open the door for possible legal action.

Though Washington was the early favorite to acquire the former Colts receiver, the Chargers came in late with an offer that matched the Redskins. If Garcon had not valued the potential of catching passes from RG3, he likely would’ve taken that cross-country flight to sign with San Diego.

I am sad that we are so wealthy but we do NOT have a great sports bar. I guess all our money is spend on defending piss poor FCPS.

The Junkies at least have Ashburn bars.

Anyone care to defend where we CHOOSE to live?

Stop complaining and do something! Otherwise we are all the same asshole.

There is a better chance that the skins win the next 12 straight superbowls going undefeated every year than RG3 gets picked over Luck. IF they were to take RG3 over Luck, anyone who had anything to do with who they draft should be immediately fired upon the spot and never allowed to work again in the nfl.

That is the ONLY way I could see that happening is Irsay just overruling all his football people and some of them quiting over it. RG3 has potential, but Luck is on his own level for the draft

Then got cut and was a part time starter last season for the bears. Still may be an upgrade over what they have. Has potential at least but not the player the pro bowls suggest he is.

Why they arent making a big push for Hutchinson who would actually be an upgrade they desperately need is beyond me

Apparently the Shanys really like Lichenstiger or how ever its spelled. Count them in the minority around the league on that assessment.

Guys like Hutch rarely hit free agency while they still have years left in them. Especially with their first round pick going to a QB and not having a 2nd rounder, they should have been all in on him

Their o-line wont win any games unless their plan is to have RG3 scramble every play

Hey look guys, WTL made a negative comment about the Redskins. It's so surprising!

It doesn't matter who they sign WTL, you will find something to criticize. Isn’t there a Ratbird thread somewhere you can comment on?

Did I not say that Garçon was a good signing?

As for Meriweather, he was a first round draft pick who went to two pro bowls and then Belichick got rid of him, despite the fact the Patriot's defense was getting long in the tooth. Last year, he rode the bench in Chicago. Sounds to me he's Landry with a worse attitude yet less talent. Ergo, dumpster diving.

Even Garcon was pretty expensive for what you get from him but he probably does become their number 1.

Mayweather being called dumpster diving is probably pretty accurate. Hes got some talent but theres obviously something wrong with him or his attitude. Mid 20 something year old pro bowlers dont get benched and/or cut without a good reason

If more complete thinks these signings put them in the running for the division he will have a very disappointing season

You honestly want to try and say Merriweather was a great pickup? Or that Garcon is all the offense was missing?

They certainly wont be building through the draft the next few years so free agency is their only shot since the next time they have a first round pick well be talking about 2016 presidential nominees.

For what its worth I called their 4 win season last year and Im pretty sure you were in the group ridiculing me over it. So again I restate you are in for a disappointing year if you think any signing theyve had so far was a game changer

Free agent signings alone do not change the fortunes of a team,,,

The fact many of the young players have game experience will do more to improve the team next season,,,

The free agent pick ups are to ENHANCE what you are already building, and yes, I do think these few pick ups do that,,

A couple of O-linemen would probably do more, but we have to wait and see,,,

It's day 2 of free agency and the draft isn't for a month,,,A little early to predict anything at this point,,,

Normally I'm skeptical, but as long as they get some OL help, I like this year's choices. The upside, young, hungry guys, that works, even with the $ attached. Pierre Garcon is a stud. That alone with RG III is exciting. Shanahan has the running game, and if he gets Eddie Royal, watch out NFL. Jarvis I forgot his name, the #2 draft pick from last year brings more credibility to the line. This is not the Redskins of years past.

If RGIII has any ability like Cam Newton(I think he's better than the Panthers QB), this team is going to be a contender almost immediately. Worst case scenario is 9-7, but even then, after that will be the Playoffs.

Good job staying away Danny, except with the $ that Allen and Shanny want.

You might be the first person to ever call Garcon a stud. An upgrade yes, elite WR no.

Theres just 1 big problem, Newton had Steve Smith to throw too. They arent going to win more games this season then they have in the last 2 years combined. 9-7 is a best case outlook not worse case.

Heres their schedule

Home games: New York Giants, Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta, Carolina, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Minnesota

Away games: New York Giants, Philadelphia, Dallas, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis

Balt, Pit, Saints, Atl can just go ahead and put an L next to those and theyll lose at minimum 3 games to Phily Dallas Giants.

He is a stud. His size and speed don't lie. And let's be forthright, he caught all those balls from Dan Orvlosky or however its spelled. Wait until RGIII is throwing 40 yard lazers to him.

9-7 yes most likely. But if RGII adapts like Cam Newton, and with the addition of a solid OLine and Eddie Royal being signed, 11-5 is possible. There are some bums on that schedule.

Yeah today's loss of the chance for Grubb sucked. That would have been great. Yet, let's hope Silverback gets his shit together, and maybe they can get someone else. And then draft right here, with some beasts. Bring back the Hogs

Garcons stats were identical to his stats the year before with Peyton throwing him the ball. He also 6 feet tall, thats not big for a WR.

11-5 is in no way shape or form possible. They won exactly 2 division games last year. They arent all of a sudden going to run the division with a rookie QB who has no protection and has never run anything remotely resembling a pro offense.

Theres two bums on the schedule St louis and Minn. They lost to minn last year and only beat the Rams because the rams couldnt catch.

RG3 is going to be a bust and it wont be because of his talent. DC was the worst place he could have come because now everyone expects playoffs right away or at minimum a winning season. People will be all over him when he struggles as expected and the team isnt winning and will be calling for him to be run out of town.

Not sure what you mean by draft right here. After RG3 they dont pick until the 3rd round. You dont find stud linemen that resemble the old hogs line in the 3rd round anymore

Tackles, you are right, nope. Limited or backups at the most. Yet Guards are available, and perhaps some help in the secondary.(3,4,5). After that its a crapshoot though, and hoping they get someone left in FA to fill the void. Razorback needs to protect RGIII big time, the onus is one him.

Franchising Davis could have been to make him more tradable,,,

If Cooley's healthy, trade Davis for a second rounder and move on,,,

I'm sure Cooley would be willing to re-structure his contract to stay in D.C.,,,he's basically the face of the franchise at the moment,,,

Without an O line nothing else matters. Look at Rivers last year in SD. Even he struggled when they had 4 backup linemen playing and he had no time to throw.

With a young qb o-line shouldnt be the biggest concern. Also dont forget Trent Williams is one pee test away from missing a whole season

The Skins made a GREAT call by drafting RG3..The night he rec'd his Heisman Trophy I said then "we have to get him".
Cooley will do what he can to stay here, at the end of the season he stressed how much he loves the area and the team and will be hoping that the Skins don't let him go..I for one hope Cooley is here to stay and more importantly, can retire as a Redskin, the team he loves so much.
Might not be this season or the next but the Redskins are definitely working towards a comeback!

For the record, going after RG3 was a good move because it was the only move. Garçon is an upgrade at WR over Santana Moss, but anyone wanting to call him a stud needs to keep in mind he had one of the greatest QBs of all time throwing to him and one of the better receivers drawing double-coverage across from him and the best you can really say is his numbers were respectable. And before anyone sings the praises of Danny Boy, if the team fails to produce this year the blame falls squarely on his shoulders with the salary cap debacle.

Both Garçon and Reggie Wayne only did well when what's his name was drawing double coverage.

Anytime the colts Harrison was hurt opposing teams would shut them down.

The Colts offense really utilized the slot receiver, HB-receiver and tight end to open up opportunities downfield. The only great receiver he had was Marvin Harrison, who may be headed into OJ territory in his personal life. It's amazing what Manning did with the receivers they had and the horrific running game the Colts usually saddled him with.

Davis may have been franchised to increase his perceived value,,,talent wise Davis is worth a 2nd rounder,,,he just looked real stupid last season,,

This is Dan Snyder logic.

Anyone else who mortgaged the future of his franchise on one QB would surround him with the best O-Line talent available to protect his investment. Instead of putting his multi-million dollar crown jewel in a safe in a bank vault, Snyder is leaving it on a table in the Waffle House.

For the 100th time, Snyder isn't involved in personnel decisions. Not since Bruce was hired. He signs checks, and leaves the rest to football people.

If you want to criticize someone for personnel moves, it's Morocco Brown, Scott Campbell, Shanny and Bruce.

The sooner you understand this the sooner you will cease to look like you haven’t a clue about the Redskins front office.

He's a good blocker, I'd like to see him on the team, I just don't know how many RB's you can keep on the roster

Hightower-Helu-Royster seems like the best way to go,,,
