The Junkies????
Posted by: Mad at the World ()

WJFK is going to replace Howard Stern with...The Junkies? THE JUNKIES????!!!

WTF?!

Seriously. The Junkies aren't even good enough to be doing college radio. They are TERRIBLE! I could go down to the station and do a better job than these amateurish, insufferable bozos! Is the management at WJFK intentionally trying to ruin the station? If so, they are doing a bang-up job!

Your crazy! You probably wish Bill OReilly was on in the morning instead. Junkies will make sitting in rush hour so much more enjoyable. I loved Howard back in the day. But the Fart jokes have gotten old.

The Junkies suck. They have no business being on middays, much less morning drive. They have no bits. They have no guests. They have nothing interesting to say. Don and Mike are bitching about this now, but by June, after the impending ratings disaster is fully realized, Michael Hughes, et al, will be begging D&M to do mornings. WJFK thought they would save a buck by using The Junkies. The problem is they are unlistenable. It doesn't make much sense to save a buck when they will have essentially NO audience.

The Junkies rock. And on day #1 they'll have more listeners in the DC area than Howard will.

I love Don and Mike as well. But before some unfortunate things happened to Don, he did not plan on being around at the end of the year anyway. Maybe the wheels were already rolling on this decision.
Not everyone is going to like the Junkies like not everyone likes D& M or O&A or Elliot. Personally for me the Junkies are way better than anything else on in the morning. As I said before, Howard is just getting old. Anytime you listen to him he just discusses fart sound and what he is not allowed to say, which probably is not important anyway.

The difference is D&M and Howard are professionals who actually lay out a show complete with skits, guest segments and other entertaining elements that carry the shows through day after day. The Junkies don't do any of that. They just show up and B.S. - mostly about uninteresting crap that is relevant only to them. That is going to get old very fast, especially for a morning drive segment that is supposed to compete in one of the top markets in the country. My guess is they will make it through two books and will be replaced either by D&M or Roth (if, for some reason Roth ends up working out, which I don't believe is going to happen).

a smart decision would be to revamp the show... move to a more serious, "junkies only" studio environment, get a new producer who has real street years making successful programs, and most important, find out which junkie makes the show suck the most and fire his ass. There's no rule that says they have to have four of them. One of them, I am not sure which one since three of them sound exactley alike, seems to hate doing the show. Plus one of the others is a lawyer so he doesn't need the job.

Among the things they need to stop doing:

gov erlich interviews
calls from their mothers/brothers/family

they could bring back some past segments that were funny and try to do them more professionally, like "what the brothers be sayin'". That had some potential but they let a dumbass do it so it got ruined. They could find a comic on the DC scene and hire him to do it, the comedy potential would be a lot higher.

Kinda like I have to be to enjoy the show.

Was it just me, or were Don & Mike hinting yesterday that they might jump to Sirius with Howard Stern? If so, these guys were busting on satellite a couple of weeks ago. Seems like The Junkies thing is causing them to re-consider broadcast radio. I think it would be good. Let JFK sink under the incompetence of its management. It will be Espanol within six months (can Sonny Jurgenson speak Spanish?)

That Peter Rosenburg guy? The guy needs to buy a sense of humor. However, he still sounds infinitely more professional than the Junkies.

Yeah, I agree sup, Rosenberg is the worst thing on the station, even after that car guy on the weekends who attacks his listeners. Rosenberg's show is just all race talk, all the time, like he has a fucking brain or something. He needs to shut the fuck up and do a real radio show, nobody cares what insights into race some rich jewish daddy's kid has.

Apparently Rosenberg is a failed child star who couldn't cut it as a TV director in Hollywood. I guess that gives him some special insight into race relations. I have an idea. Have him live in an apartment building full of poor blacks and Hispanics for six months and then have him talk about race issues. I bet he will start sounding more like Bill O'Reilly and less like Phil Donahue.

I like reading articles about how the Junkies are like listening to your buddies from next door. You know what? I have to listen to my buddies too fucking much as it is now. I sure the hell don't want to listen to them while driving to work in the morning.

The Junkies are SIIIILLLYYYY. I can't wait for them to take over WJFK. Stern is good but I think the Junks are a good replacement. For all you Junkies haters, go back to your 99.5 Hot Morning Mess crap...you guys don't know good talk radio when you hear it.

Oddly enough I know two people that work there at HOT99.5 (stupid Teapot Tim and another dude named Jay Conklin who works in promotions and is a first-class egomaniacal tool, they both went to HS/junior high with me and I've known Jay since 3rd grade), but I've never had the honor of listening to it since it's never been on my presets. 99.5 does a shit job making people aware they exist. I'm a radiophile and I have not once remembered to turn them on.

Let me tell you, Teapot Tim, aka Tim Coburn, was assumed to be the gayest guy in school when we were at Oakton (no joke there), and I see he's living up to that. I hear he barely gets paid for all that self-deprication. He's even gone to jail for that dumb show, hope it was worth it.

OK I called the show dumb but I really have never heard it, for all I know it's genius.

It's kinda funny you're calling us out for our taste when you are a junkies diehard. Their show has lacked any serious quality since... get this... the day they left nights. Their chemistry has been sorely amiss and they seem to not want to be there.

They already blew one chance in the morning, however, they had to play music on that job and it's safe to assume they will not have to now. That may help. I am perfectly willing to give them a shot, nothing else is BETTER but not much else is really WORSE, either. The political talk needs to go, along with their nonstop celebrity fawning, and they need to get back to sports talk and good listener games. And I stand by my earlier idea of dumping a junkie in favor of local comedy talent (or national if they can get it). One of those guys, I'm not sure which one since all but Lurch sound alike, is barely awake for the show and is clearly showing up just to get a check. He needs to go.

It also may not hurt them to do something really outrageous to get suspended and get in the news, but that would reek of Howard-copying at this point.

And as for Howard, his show is still great the ten minutes every day he ISN'T talking about the move. He's found a way to work it in even every conversation even after they suspended him for constantly mentioning Sirius.

Wow, nice book you just wrote. If I cared, I might have read it. Junkies isn't supposed to be "serious" and neither was my thread. Chill out man, it's a freaking chat forum. You're turning out to be as gay as your buddy Teapot Tim.

I'm also sorry your reading comprehension is so poor that you can't make it through a few paragraphs, but I'm not surprised by it. You've always come off as nothing but an uneducated tool. You must take MONTHS to read a newspaper article.

I'm sorry, clearly you would prefer to have the entire forum to yourself. I'm sure that you spend all day in a room, alternating between jerking off to child porn, and reciting top 40 music lyrics to yourself. Now you want to bring your show to the net.

See, you don't even need a radio.

If your taste wasn't total shit I might have more respect for your opinion, but your various choices in life clearly show you're incapable of making them intelligently.

I'm also sorry you have no friends and feel like you need to "hang" with four guys on the radio who have no idea you exist. Pathetic doesn't even touch that.

talk about missed abortion opportunities.. btw, are you sure you won't be out standing in line for an XBox tonight? Plenty of young boys will be there, you can bet.

The Hot Morning Mess, Jack Diamond in the Morning, etc., are all ponderous shit. As I recall, all of those shows have shit for ratings, so I'm not sure why Clear Channel and Infinity continue to spend money on the Morning Zoo crap when playing music is a lot cheaper and gets just as shitty ratings.

The problem with the Junkies is they have no structure to their show. Stern, Don & Mike, etc., have built up a series of repeating bits over the years and each show actually has a structure that keeps them fresh. The Junkies are flat and uninteresting and are going to get their asses kicked by WTOP, NPR and Tom Joyner in this market.

I agree with you on this, but I believe it is part of Stern's strategy. I think his goal is to use his show to advertise his move to Sirius and in the process drain the morning slot of listeners. Basically, his replacements are going to start with shitty audience numbers and are going to have to try to rebuild.

I think the only one in the entire country who has a shot of succeeding is Adam Corrolla, mostly because people aren't expecting too much from him and his sense of humor fits in well with radio. The few times I have heard David Lee Roth try to wing it, he sounded absolutely clueless. Just because he was one of the greatest front men in the history of Rock & Roll, it doesn't mean he can ad-lib for four hours every day. Remember everyone assumed Jesse Ventura could do a Hardball-type show and when everyone thought it was a given Chevy Chase could do a Tonight Show knock off? They were wrong. The people at Infinity are wrong about DLR, too.

Only a few more days until The Junkies get on morning drive at WJFK and slowly strangle the station to death. I tried listening to them again the other day. They were talking about some 60th rate bowl game between two schools that are one step above being community colleges. This is a formula for success?

I read where WJFK is having all sorts of issues now. First they are losing Stern, which brought in 25% of their revenue. Now it looks like they are going to lose the Redskins, which brought in another 25%. Granted, they were paying way too much for the Redskins and probably lost money on the deal, but at least they could claim it as a loss leader to bring in listeners and advertisers they probably couldn't get to before. Anyway, I expect WJFK will be Spanish-speaking by the end of 2006.

I managed to get through about 5 minutes of the Junkies this morning. They were so busy kissing Troy Aikman's ass it was nauseating. Howard Stern would have asked him how much ass he got while he was a Cowboy. Once again, they focused on dull Sports Talk. There is a reason why all of the local Sports programming on broadcast TV is at 11pm on Sundays. These guys are toast in 6 months. I hear that DLR absolutely bombed this morning in NYC. I see where Bonneville has done a complete overhaul of their stations, getting rid of the crappy music format and focusing on more talk - Specifically with the Washington Post.

Smart move. These guys realize that Satellite Radio is destroying broadcast radio as we know it and they need to come up with unique formats to compete. WJFK, on the other hand, is trying to replace Howard Stern with a fourth-rate sports-talk program. Good luck, Michael Hughes. Maybe you should fill out that Wendy's application now before it is too late.

I'm pretty sure Mike is Catholic. Certainly their former producer Beth Ann was. Maybe if the Catholic Church didn't allow its priests to fondle pre-teen boys it wouldn't be such a target of scorn and ridicule. The Catholic Church has done this to itself.

So far I have been wholly unimpressed with The Junkies. They basically do the same sports show they have always done. The other day they had the GM of the Houston Texans on. Besides the Reggie Bush speculation, who the fuck in the DC area cares about the Houston fucking Texans (not surprisingly the guy wouldn't even discuss Bush)? Not only are they NOT in the Redskins' Division, they aren't even in the NFC! They aren't even a compelling AFC adversary like KC or the Ravens. Not even Texans care about the Texans! Ask anyone from Texas and they are Dallas fans. EVEN PEOPLE FROM HOUSTON! WTF?

That's rediculous. Howard Stern talks about tits and ass and was popular because he stretched the limits of acceptability so was in the news all the time. Now that he doesn't have the FCC to have his name in the news all the time, he'll fade into nothingness with the exception of those like DZK who'll treat him like Elvis fans treat Elvis.

Everybody talks about tits and ass, he just did it on public airwaves, big deal. You think the FCC is the reason why Howard Stern's radio show is far-and-beyond the most successful and long running program in broadcasting history? You think the promotion from the FCC in the media is enough to garner him the highest ratings of any DJ for nearly his entire career? Is the FCC the reason we have to listen to thousands of nation-wide shows on the airwaves that copy Howard Stern's content and format? Did they promote his #1 movie, or book?

Or do you think it's more likely because he's an accomplished broadcaster with years of experience and a competent group of workers around him, combined with the fact that everyone wants to hear and talk about the things we're "not supposed" to talk about.

The dude has fans. And we're not listening to piss off the FCC.

it's not that you are not supposed to talk about it as there should be some level of restraint, any restraint at all. seriously, too many people are reverting to sex driven troglodytes. it just goes to show how many uneducated dullards there are in this country. these people breed to large numbers and multiply like vermin. is this to say if you listen Stern's show you are one of these? of coarse not but there is a good chance you are.

obviously, it's not something I go around pondering 24/7 -- but hearing a sexy ladies voice on the radio and hearing Howard "probe" her (excuse the pun) for information she's never revealed... that shit is entertaining. it's not like I'm getting horny from it, but listening to somebody either shut-down or open their personal lives up completely is fun to be a part of. no other host has the ability to get as much out of his guests, that I've seen.

I like the personal interaction between the crew, the guests, etc... And I like it when there are no (or less) boundaries, so everything can be covered. I've spent most of my life being lied to by my friends, parents, the christian religion and the government. So, I don't appreciate boundaries and I like honesty.

Ehh, I don't really classify people in the "vermin" catagory, it's kind of disrespectful and egotistical. Not to mention, hostile. I mean, seriously, who are we to judge? We all have potentially negative aspects to our personality. Depends whose describing them. I just know this... I wouldn't spend a second of my life worrying about what other people talk about.

DZK,

Ehh, I don't really classify people in the "vermin" catagory, it's kind of disrespectful and egotistical. Not to mention, hostile. I mean, seriously, who are we to judge? We all have potentially negative aspects to our personality. Depends whose describing them.

n. pl. vermin
   1. Various small animals or insects, such as rats or cockroaches, that are destructive, annoying, or injurious to health.
   2. Animals that prey on game, such as foxes or weasels.
   3.
         1. A person considered loathsome or highly offensive.
         2. Such people considered as a group.
well... while they are not small, "breeders" as i call them (for their excessive amount of offspring which are also breeders, resulting in even higher numbers of them) are detrimental for society like parasites. generally i consider their complete lack of civility to be offensive. who am i to judge? im a member of society. of coarse nobody is perfect but there is a big difference between decent people and breeders.

Apparently the ratings are coming out on all of the Howard Stern replacements and they are an unmitigated disaster. Haven't seen the Junkies' ratings yet, but I would have to assume they are in the dumper also. Does WJFK really expect people who tuned in for the Robo-Spanker to stick around and hear these chuckle-heads talk about....Ryan Leaf?

RYAN LEAF? Excuse me???? When the fuck was this guy in the NFL??? Ever hear of being TOPICAL? What's Jeff Hostetler up to these days? Geez!

It's bad enough they talk about sports. But the bulk of their program is focused on crap like the Maryland Nighthawks and sports stories that were relevant when THEY WERE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.

Lord. Give Don & Mike what they want to go to mornings. PLEASE!!!!!

Don't know what Don & Mike sounded like in the mornings, but they have to be better than The Junkies. These guys dropped the "Sports" in their name, but I guess it never occurred to them NOT to commit 90% of their show to sports. It is PAINFUL! Elliot in the Morning discusses some sports, maybe 10% of the time, but nothing like these guys. Their show is good for Sunday afternoons at best and was tolerable at mid-day. It is terrible as a Morning Show. Ugh!

The Junkies are tanking (though not nearly as bad as other Stern replacements) according to the latest Arbitron figures from DCRTV.com....

"In morning drive, WJFK-FM netted a 4.4 share among the age 25-to-54 "money" demo for 8th place in the rolling November-to-January Arbitrend average. That was down only a little bit from Howard Stern's 4.6 share in the fall. But, when you break down the numbers to reflect only the post-Stern radio universe after 1/1, sources tell DCRTV that WJFK-FM's full-day audience is below a 2.0 share. We're told that Stern had a 5.5 in November, a 5.4 in December, and that the Junkies had a 2.3 morning drive share in January. In Baltimore, via WHFS, the news for the Junkies was even worse. In the age 25-to-54 demo, Stern's two last months produced a 5.9 and a 7.6. The Junkies had only a 1.8 morning drive share in January."

...Don & Mike's ratings, on the other hand, were nearly double The Junkies.

WJFK is being run into the ground.

Don & Mike make loads of dough. The Junkies don't. That's why they are in the morning slot instead of Don & Mike, because D&M asked for more money. I would imagine The Junkies are, at best, pulling down about $150K each until they can prove they can generate revenue for the station. Not bad, but not spectacular, either.

So the former "Sports" Junkies were talking about GMU this morning (imagine that. They broke into their coverage of the ABA Nighthawks to cover an actual sports story). One of the morons said that if GMU wins the Final Four it will be the greatest sports story in 20 years!

Hmmm. I guess that whole Red Sox winning the World Series wasn't that big a deal, even after they went through the New York Yankees in possibly the greatest play-off series EVER.

There is no way that the Sox winning the ALCS in 2004 is a bigger story than Mason winning the NCAA. Yes, the Red Sox suffered for a long time, but they had a good team in '04. To come back from down 0-3 was very nice, but come on! Mason winning the NCAA?? That is a whole different level. You also have to consider the broader appeal that college basketball has, especially the NCAA Tourney, as compared to MLB.

You are insane. The NCAA Tourney pales compared to the World Series for notoriety or prestige. Every sports commentator on TV is talking about how this accomplishment would be even bigger if the NCAA Tourney was on par with the World Series or SuperBowl, which it is not.

As for the Red Sox, there has never been such an utter collapse of a team than the New York Yankees during that series. It is arguably THE greatest series ever played in baseball, and it happened just a couple of years ago.

As for GMU, I am a huge fan and hope they take it all. However, it is not THE GREATEST sports story of the past 20 years.

I might be insane, but it looks to me that you are a card carrying member of the Red Sox Nation and the second coming of Jesus Christ himself would pale in comparison to your Sox finally winning a World Series in your eyes. Either way. To each their own...

Ah. David Lee Roth is gone before even one book was done. Opie and Anthony are going to take his place. How long do you think WJFK is going to let The Junkies limp along in the mornings? I imagine when O&A's first book comes out in a few months and they demonstrate a vast improvement over Roth, the guys at JFK are going to have little choice but to move The Junkies back to middays.

As much as I will miss hearing The Junkies talk about some shit that happened to them in middle school that not even their friends from middle school give a flying fuck about, O&A will have to be a vast improvement over these chuckleheads.

It seems to me that the people that want O&A to return to JFK are some of the few people that listened to them when they were on that station a few years ago. If you look at their ratings from back then, they were not very good. In fact, they were bad! It was similar to when Don and Mike were on in New York City. They just didn't play well in DC for some reason.

If JFK were to make some sort of lineup that actually made sense though where O&A were on in the AM, then the Junkies, then D&M, that might work. That hodge podge lineup now is a joke. Rosenberg would be lucky to have a college radio show much less a show in a Top 10 Market. (Does he have some incriminating photos of CBS Radio bosses or something?) And Jay Severin? How does he fit the station's targeted demographics? He's a political talk show hack!

Never heard O&A, but they have to be better than The Junkies. I think the hype surrounding their "comeback" to terrestrial radio will be enough to jumpstart the ratings of the stations they are on. The main problem with the Junkies is that they are a sports-talk program better suited for a sports-talk station or for pre-game shows on the weekend. There aren't enough people out there who want to listen to sports talk every morning to justify this kind of programming on a supposedly top-rated FM-er in a market like DC. Sports talk works better as a syndicated program on AM-ers or low-end FM stations that have a smaller cost structure than WJFK.

As for Rosenberg, he would probably be fine back on in the evenings or late night. His Liberal Lite spiel isn't particularly offensive and might play well with the college crowd, which ain't listening at middays.

As for Jay Severin, haven't heard him. But there is a reason why guys like Fred Grandy and Neil Boortz are on in the hinterlands of radio in AM band amongst the Mexican and Big Band stations, not on a major FM talk station.

I'll be the first to admit that the Junkies aren't for everyone. But you apparently don't even listen to the show with your description of them. Yes, they do talk about sports, but it is hardly entirely about sports! It is more of a lifestyle show ala Don and Mike. They talk about a lot of things, usually things that are of interest to them, but it is much more than sports.

I thought the SPorts Junkies officially became just "The Junkies" specifically so they could focus more on their meaningless daily lives...

The junkies never talked sports that much even when it was supposed to be a sports show. The talk about fantasy sports, yeah, and that's pretty irritating. But the fact of the matter is that the four minds of the junkies combined are no match for the one mind of say, george michael (for example), when it comes to speaking about sports in a way that keeps the listeners engaged and interested.

The Junkies are better at keeping the listener engaged through stories about what they really care about... themselves and their day-to-day lives and interactions. The problem is you can't fill a show with that, the games they play are always stupid or overly derivative, and they refuse to go into battle with other DJ's on the station, which is how JFK traditionally made its bread and butter... through lack of listener attrition during the course of the day.

Back several years ago, people would listen to Stern trash the rest of the shows on the station (he used to divide himself as follows: he liked Liddy and had him on his show occasionally

WJFK used to have it so all the shows were competing even though they were on at different times on the same station. It was almost as if it was an alpha-male contest for station dominance. Even Stern would weigh in and talk shit about the other shows. Mostly it was things that each side made a point of saying "we're not going to say that" about that fueled the underlying intershow hostility.

This hostility between shows kept people from turning the station after the show they were listening to was over. So a person would listen to JFK the entire day, from 6AM to 11PM.

Now the shows on the station are unthreatened by each other and do not compete in the way I described. As a result JFK has become more boring than ever.

The sports talk is ridiculously bad. They dedicate five seconds to the NBA playoffs. Maybe a little to the NHL playoffs. Then they talk ad naseum about some guy who played 2nd string CB for the Terps in 1994. Some guy who walked on for the Saints, started two games and never played again. Some guy who is probably working as a night manager at a Denny's somewhere in Tennessee. And yet, they talk incessantly about guys like this. Who the Fuck Cares???? NOBODY!
