When the subway is finished...are the going to increase the Police force?

I've been thinking about this since the new rail plan started. With train access available to D.C. and Maryland residents, I would imagine a significant increase in crime in Reston/Herndon. Though I know Herndon is it's own town, are they going to increase the force? Reston will need more than 5 policeman to handle all the new vistors. lol. Seriously though. Any thoughts?

Is there any evidence of badguys using Metrorail to get to areas to commit crimes over and above other means?

Perhaps that's a good place to start.

[based on the just-released Metrorail crime stats, it looks like the badguys commit the crimes at the stations IN the bad areas - that is, they don't wander far from home]

Like wild animals some will roam further to better hunting grounds. For instance a PG thug finds it tough to make a decent armed robbery buck in PG. The victims may be fellow thugs already armed or some poor welfare case whose only valuables are lottery tickets and a food stamp card.
Better to come to suburbs in Virginia where liberal whites will gladly hand over their Iphones, pocket cash, North Farce jackets and gold jewelry without a fight.

To be safe on the subway don't wear expensive jewelry, Rolex watches, nice shoes, fashionable coats , new shirts or snazzy pants. Don't sport your cell phone or display your I-Pad.
NEVER fall asleep, avoid eye contact and stay close to the exit.

Enjoy your ride.

It's totally stupid to think that thugs are gonna spend the time traveling on metro from bad parts of PG all the way to Herndon just to steal wallets or iPhones. Retarded, actually. Metro has been in places like Ballston, Clarendon, Falls Church, and Vienna for decades without those neighborhoods turning into these crime-ridden gangster paradises everyone's so paranoid about. It's not like a thug can make a quick, clean getaway on Metro. Why wouldn't they just drive to Herndon or Reston to commit crimes? What are they gonna do, rob someone in RTC then RUN to the metro station and stand there waiting for a train? It's just silly.

Like Olde Farte pointed out, most crimes around metro stations happen in places that are already fucked up.

It'll take a long time for Tysons Corner and Reston to build out. It took about 30 years for the buildout in Arlington. You couldn't tell there was that much of an impact in most of Arlington until the bubble of the last fifteen years.

Like mentioned by another poster in this thread the Metro stations where the most crime(robberies, assasults etc) happen are already in areas that are pretty bad to begin with(i.e. PG county, SE DC, parts of NE) because mainly the rider demograpghic's change. If you ride metro anytime during the week it's mostly white upper-middle class people going to work in DC or Arlington/Alexandra. Anytime on the weekend's going to or back from DC to NOVA it's mostly drunk partygoers(although I will admit that there are some pretty shady looking charaters hanging around the Viennia Metro station at night).

However on this issue, the first thing Metro could do to improve the crime and safety problems on it's trains and in the station's to have it's station employee's actually begin to give a shit and the Metro cops to get their priorties safe so instead of ticketing people to care about the safety of the system. Of course I'm think it's going to take a big incident(like Mohammad the terrorist realizing that it would be a good and easy idea to ride into the center of DC with a sucide bomb belt at rush hour and blow up it up) to begin changing things with the lack of appalling security on Metro.

Again though I'm skecpitcal all the thugs and trouble makers from the poor parts of DC/MD are just going to hop on the METRO and come out to Tyson's or Reston. First of all like another poster said it doesn't offer a good escape route,(I mean after you commt a robbery you have to get to the station and wide for a train). Secondly the lily white, or Latino/Asian demographics of this area unlike parts of DC or MD are going to cause a gangbanger to stick out and attract attention.

Lastly, unlike in MD or parts of DC, the police force's around NOVA are largely dedicated to severing the public and are largely uncorrupt, self-interested, or restrined by political correctless. Completally diffrent from DC or Maryland. FFX and NOVA cops in general have a reputation among blacks for being a bunch of racist rednecks, who are extremely unreleting and aggressive. And being a bunch you generally don't want to fuck with or attract attention from. Also keep in mind, the state of Virginia is also alot less tolorant of this type of stuff and doesn't put up with shit unlike the politically correct liberals who run DC or Maryland.

Another big thing we got going for us around here is that Virginia is a big gun rights/conceled carry state. So the possibilty that your victim maybe packing heat is a strong deterrant factor alone.

So with this all in mind I think we have little to worry about in terms of Metro's expansion and crime.

It wasnt that long ago that Alexandria had a guy who took the subway to rob banks on King Street. The subways cameras caught his pic getting back on the northbound train to DC so yes it does happen.

When the foot traffic at Tysons starts to resemble the foot traffic at Pentagon City, you'll know the Metro station has opened.

The Reston stop is just way too far out to make it worthwhile. It's going in as a commuting station, not a "take the metro and come out to Reston" one. Plus Phase I stops at Whiele, not RTC.

I think Reston has its own homegrown thugs. A few extras migrating in from elsewhere to ply their trade proably wont be noticied.

Well, I can only speak from my own experience as the owner of a home one block from the West Falls Church metro. The place has been broken into three times in 20 years; most recently at night with the tenants at home. The tenants (understandably) insisted on a metal barred door and multiple security lights (ka-ching!). There were multiple break-ins in the surrounding neighborhoods within the same timeframe.

Three times may not sound like much, but our home in Western Fairfax County has never been broken into. And yes, the perps were the demographic that you'd expect.

We sold several condos in DC because of this sort of thing. We found out the hard way that motivated thieves can break through metal bars. Not worth the aggravation.

Yeah, its not like Falls Church has a gang problem.

Yeah, I'm sure none of them live in Culmore, 7 Corners, or Bailey's. All those MS-13 guys live someplace else and just commute to Falls Church via the orange line. That makes sense.

Once again, TheMeeper spews shit without knowing the facts......

FALLS CHURCH, VA. (WUSA) - Thieves have been breaking into homes in Falls Church City and Arlington County by kicking in doors, slashing and breaking windows and walking through unlocked doors.

Police says there have been 10 between September 2 and October 7. They've occured in neighborhoods adjacent to Broadmont in the City of Falls Church and in Arlington between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. on various days of the week.

Many of the homes hit are near the East Falls Church Metro Station. Police believe the suspects may be using the Metro as an easy getaway.

Herndon probably not, the Town doesnt have the budget for it. Reston already has a FCPD station there so they do have a significant presence. The big chance will be seeing Metro cops in the new area so technically speaking that could be considered an increase.

Of course if theres a significant enough increase in crime overtime you could see more officers assigned to the reston station
