what's the point of safety inspection stickers on cars?

the DMV can access emissions test results of your car...
if you don't pass, they don't let you renew your registration...
why not just incorporate the safety inspection result
the same way?(if you don't pass, your tags don't get renewed)

it must cost millions of dollars to print all those stickers
year after year after year.... :)

just a thought...

Well your reasoning is why they got rid of the country stickers.

As for having a sticker on your car, i guess it's just so cops can see if it passed without having to look up your information. I see no reason why it couldn't be all included in a database.

It also has to do with different VA departments in charge of each. Yeah the Department of Environmental Quality hooked up with DMV to link emissions to registration, but that may have worked well because 1) where emmissions is necessary it is a prerequisite for registration by law (and safety inspection isn't), and 2) the deployment was limited as emmissions inspections are not required throughout the state and the impact may have been smaller than linking all vehicles' inspection status.

But I tend to agree with the OP... now that infrastructure is in place to communicate emissions results to DMV, why not change the inspection interval to two years and make it all necessary for registration?

Check the 7-11 on Backlick Rd near Mikes American. Jose sells mucho stickers there for around $50.00 a piece.

I had read somewhere that the state was going to up the time between inspections from one year to two. Anyone else know about this?

Kaine had talked about a 2-year inspection cycle but I guess it didn't get done this session.

Very few counties have emissions testing.

Northern VA and possibly Chesapeake (may have it now)

Can't tie to a system not in place...

What I meant was they can use the same equipment and communications architecture used now, along with all the lessons learned on its deployment, throughout the rest of the state. It would just send inspection info to DMV instead of just emissions in areas where emissions isn't required.

Gotcha.

But that would mean a small service station would have to invest into the modem and maintain the communications line to Richmond.

Not saying the idea isn't good, but look how many emissions stations we lost when they had to invest in that new equipment, scary! I don't want fewer stations like MD or DC.

If you like it now, you'd have loved it when the safety inspection was EVERY SIX MONTHS!

It only cost $2.00, though.

They require stickers on the windshield so the copers can stand at the toll booths and bust more people without having to look it up in their car. Communistwealth folks, it's for YOUR good.

The transmission isn't a requirement... that's why they give you a report printout. A similar barcoded report could be created for inspection results, or the inspection results could be combined with the emissions report. Either way, the report would then be used for the registration, as it was before the emissions results were transmitted.

I bet you can't find a Virginia emissions station that does not have the transmission equipment. It's a little difficult to do your car registration online with a paper report.

Right, for stations that DO emissions, but that wasn't always the case. We're talking about the cases where in Virginia emissions tests aren't required, which is most of the state. A station that doesn't do emissions tests isn't likely to have the transmission equipment.

Agreed. That very well may be one of the (if not THE) reasons why they don't offer such a service. I don't think they would implement a similar service for satefy inspections without requiring the equipment to automate the data transfer to the DMV. Too many people renew their registration online for a paper report only to be a viable option.
