Why do teachers whine so much?
Posted by: jd ()
Date: October 19, 2005 10:02AM

After listening to teachers from oakton elem. to oakton HS whine my FCPS career, then going to college to hear Education majors whine all through school, and currently have to listen to friends who teach constantly whine, I ask why'd you become a damn teacher?

Low pay! We're not babysitters! Teaching is hard! Making lesson plans is hard!
Kids suck!

thats all i hear. my question is why did they become teachers in the first place?

Iwas a teacher for many years. I enjoyed the kids and I enjoyed my job. I loved having time off in the summers and I loved having the same holidays off as my son. Over the years though, a lot changed. Discipline became more and more of a challenge. Parents were often combative or they would complain about the teacher's procedures, grades, policies etc. By the way, I was NOT and education major. I majored in English and that is what I taught. I like to think I was not a whiner but there was plenty about the job that was hard to take. Crowded classrooms, poor working conditions, lots of work to take home on weekends and after school, meeting and inservices that were as boring as watching C Span.

TRICKIE - sounds like the cons outweighed the pros after your son got older. Summers off would be great. btw, c-span is cool.

And be forced to write new material for the relevant publications and the research to go along with that, or the provost is all over your ass. Replace college professor with community college professor and you've got yourself a fucking career. That's my dream.

Kinda hard to think that the work you're doing is meaningful when Mommy and Daddy undermine it all by telling the kids that homework is stupid and you, Jimmy, don't have to do it.

Teachers do bitch way to much. Their overpaid as far as I'm concerned very few do any work what so ever. You know who should get paid as much as those lazy ass teachers. All the young enlisted marines defending our country overseas. They get paid way less than teachers and instead of dealing with "Jimmy" who bitches about his homework they are dealing with Ahkmed who has a bomb surrounded with sharpnel attached to his chest. Who should really be getting paid more?

I have a ton of respect for the Marines and our military. At the same time, they obviously are doing it for something besides money - like national pride, honor or for the experience (as bizarre as that may be). I don't think money - any amount of money - is an incentive to someone who stands a good chance of dying if they enlist. Being a Marine is the purest form of patriotism. Too bad Senators, Congressmen and Presidents from both political parties who are paid way too damn much are exploiting that for political gain.

No i think you are the dumbass. Sure there are people who get shot in every job becuase the world is a dangerous place but anyone with a half a brain would agree with me that being a soldier in Iraq is a whole hell of alot more dangerous then being a teacher in Fairfax county.

You argued that Marines must fear for their lives, as opposed to teachers who have nothing to fear aside from whining kids, which is clearly false. Changing the comparison to the risk of getting shot across an entire country vs getting shot in a upper-class area of the United States doesn't make the original argument true. Marines volunteer for an honorable job and are in danger, but that's no reason to disparage teachers and the honorable job they do. And they aren't even allowed to wear body armor or carry guns to defend themselves.

How easily we forget this local story:

take into consideration that just because a job is more dangerous doesnt make it more difficult. however, there is a difference between physical stress and mental stress. it's the whole apples and oranges.

Seriously, though, the teachers always seemed more frustrated than the students, and that is saying a lot... I always wondered why those school shootings weren't carried out by the teachers who would seemingly get more out of it emotionally...

Yeah, though I guess you can say that to anybody who complains about whatever job they do. I know some teachers who aren't happy, and I know others who love it. I guess it just depends on the person doing the teaching, how much control he/she is able to exert in their classroom, level of administrative support in disciplinary matters, etc.

Being a substitute teacher definitely sucks. I did it for three years between jobs. It's one of those jobs where your list of things that can follow "You know what REALLY pisses me off about this job?" gets a little bit longer every day.

One example: The teacher leaves a worksheet for the kids to do. There's always one asshole who asks, "Did SHE leave this for us, or are YOU giving this to us?" Yeah, dumbass, I have a whole drawer full of math worksheets at home and I brought a bunch with me because I thought it would be fun to make you fill them out.

This is usually followed by the question, "Do we have to turn this in?" Sadly, the answer is often, "No." Most of the time, it's a worksheet they're supposed to do in class, and whatever they don't finish of this one-page worksheet during the 90-minute class is "homework."

Needless to say, they immediately don't do the worksheet and start fucking around, throwing food, etc. Minutes left in class: 87.

I'll tell you why I did it: The same reason anybody does a really crappy job that they hate. Because you have to pay your bills somehow, and it simply isn't possible for every person on the planet to find a job they enjoy. And also because every once in a while you actually get through to a kid and teach them something, which makes you hope that maybe people in this country will start giving a shit about education and you'll have more of those moments. But I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

I agree with Steve. I was in a trailer my final 2 years of teaching. It was a huge double trailer with a fake wall down the middle. Another class shared it with me.A math class. Five sections of kids who failed the math SOL's and a teacher in her final year who was using up her 900 hours of accumulated sick leave. So there were a lot of subs. I heard fights each day, cursing, desks being thrown. A lot of times they cut and stood behind the trailer under the air conditioner smoking pot. My room smelled like I had a Glade candle with the cannabis fragrance. The subs would always come and beg me for a movie to show. Those 90 minutes went by pretty slowly and the traffic in and out was very bothersome. Even inside the building, there were always subs who had a hard time controlling the class. As a sub you are totally reliant on the teacher leaving enough work for the kids to do and also holding the kids responsible for doing it. ( ie. teacher grading it)
What really irked me is that many teachers were out because of meetings and workshops, so we always had tons of subs in the building on any given day.

Steve, I hope you have a regular job by now.

Teaching sucks because you have to deal with asshole school board members, asshole parents and asshole kids. It boggles my mind how parents have kids who are the next Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold and somehow it is all the teacher's fault. Maybe if the fucking parents weren't working 80 hours a week and expecting nanny Consuela to raise their kids while they are eating at Cafe Milano every night, their kids wouldn't suck ass.

But I digress. It's not the teacher's fault or the school's fault or TV's fault that your kids are criminals. It's YOUR fault.

While I can't stand teacher-whining anymore than anyone else here, one of the things I sympathize with teachers about is that students can call you every name in the book and be generally hostile, but if you even think of talking back to them you're risking your job because the parents-of-the-year that spawned the little snot won't be able to dial the administrators phone number fast enough and the administrators are going to take all the shit they got from that parent out on the teacher.

While I might have hated it at the time, I think you need to have the experience of having a few teachers who don't take any shit a couple of times in your life, because you leanr a lot of lessons about how not to take shit from anyone who tries o shovel it on you. I remember I had one teacher at Franklin that didn't give two shits what you thought of her. One day, she found some note written about her calling her a bitch and stuff left in one of the desks, so she made a transparency of it and showed it to every single one of her classes punctuating the text of the note with commentary like "oh boo hoo, someone thinks I'm a bitch" and "please note that the word 'totally' is spelled with two L's, not one" and stuff like that. The chick that wrote it was mortified, and I think that's the effect that teacher was going for.

i agree - can't even take a piss when we need to - no phones to have instant access to, no drink machines, no trips out at lunchtime (we don't really get a lunch as they call meetings) and they want you to stay everyday after school - in addition to not being paid for it, 10 hour workdays then you go home to the other chores - and more work to get ready for the next day. then there are the mandatory meetings - and the mandatory in-service trainings. try it

Maybe the idea of teachers and a classroom are outmoded. Let the kids stay home and learn online classrooms. they can dial out of they want and not be disruptive to others who want to learn. have a digital teacher broadcast his lesson to the students homes. Give new meaning to home schooling.

Its certainly never been that. Even at the college level, a tenured professor, is not going to make a lot of money. Anyone who thinks this, even with a possible promotion to administration is going to be "loaded" is a tool. I'm sure there are plenty of tools teaching, but to put up with the bullshit they have to now, fuck that.

It is rather interesting that the structure of school has not really changed despite all the "advances" in society. We still have a teacher in a room with 30 or so kids. We still have summer vacation. We still have 7 or so classes in high schools with quarters and semesters. We still have one "principal" per building. We still have "mandatory inservice" for all teachers no matter how many years they have been teaching and no matter whether it applies to them or not. We still give A's, B's, C's, D's and F's. We still have bells and referrals and suspensions and detentions and etc., etc. We still have parents and kids who "buck" the system and make life holy hell for the teachers. We have other parents who would make life "holy hell" if we tried to change any of this.

Oh, yes, they say we are really "ahead of the curve" here.

FFX teachers whine because FFX parents think their children are smart, intelligent, gifted, unselfish, above-average, world-beaters.

When, in reality, they are selfish, entitled, over-indulged, prick-faced, underachieving little twits.

Any more questions.

Yeah, the kids suck, but don't dodge the larger point. Most teachers are losers in life. They're not smart enough, tough enough or ambitious enough to get real jobs, so they overcompensate by undertaking a self-important "profession" (which curiously treats itself like unskilled labor) and only works 9 months a year. I was a total idiot in high school and I make at least three times as much as any of my high school teachers. I've also realized I have zero respect for those losers.

And you are where you are in life, due to your self reliance, and from guidance(ie. teachers) on the way. I'm not a teacher, and their 9 month thing though is a bit misleading. Think about not only their 8 hour days, but also the grading papers at home, tests, papers, SOL requirements, License requirements, PTA events, parent and other involvements. They work a helluva lot more than 9 months, although you are right, they don't make shit.

Teaching elementary school PE is the ultimate slacker job. I barely graduated from Mason after like 7 years. The main thing I do is make sure the kids dont hurt each other or run off. Its only 45 grand a year but its stress free and 10 weeks off for summer plus a week off for spring and winter break.
I live cheap with a roomate and two beater honda civics its not a bad lifestyle. I love me some snow days too!

LMAO! Funny shit, although 90% of gym teachers/coaches aren't the brightest tools in the shed.

A really good teacher is a gift, an art and a science, and it isn't easy, it is easy to suck tho, but hopefully you feel some guilt.

I have several family members who are teachers. Teaching is a hard job. Most great teachers teach because they love kids and learning. It is too bad a few rotten teachers ruin it for the others. I wish teachers were paid more. They deserve it.

I agree, every kid needs at least one inspirational teacher every year, we haven't had one in a long while now...

I have several friends who are teachers and yes, they whine terribly. I sympathize with them, they work hard to prepare lessons, they take care of their own families, they stay up late to grade papers, the school buracracy makes their lives miserable, many parents are unreasonable. I think they make a decent salary for 9 months of work.

Some teachers are horrible and should not be allowed near children. Some teachers should be tested to make sure they know the course material before they are allowed to teach it, especially elementary school math teachers.

Many high school teachers, stay very late into the evening to support an activity or team and they are up early teaching again - these coaches/music/drama teachers are golden and should be given high praise and support. They are highly dedicated and are often treated terribly by the administration who are full of themselves.

In 23 school years as a FCPS parent, I can honestly say that I only hated one teacher - my son's algebra teacher who was a know it all bitch who didn't know it all but thought the sun rose and set on her behind because she was from UVA .

I would not want to be a teacher. Many teens from the affluent areas are spoiled BRATS.

If they'd just let us teach. The rest is crap (meetings, inservices, required testing, State objectives, etc). Most kids are great -- in general, it's the parents we have trouble with. They are too enabling and defensive. If a kid doesn't want to learn, send them home. Let mommy & daddy worry about "babysitting." Just leave us alone and let us teach those who want to learn.
